EEK! Valentine’s Day is around the corner–and I haven’t gone shopping. I’ve spent the morning on-line looking for gifts and gift ideas that might be appropriate. If you procrastinate, as I do, you might enjoy these ideas or have an idea to share.
Of course, there are the traditional gifts. Your local florist can supply roses (remember, ladies, that men can receive flowers, too), but understand that different colors have different meanings. Red roses signify true romantic love, of course. However, purple roses indicate that the giver fell in love at first sight with the recipient (that’s romantic!). Orange and coral color roses represent desire (which might or might not be a point in your favor). Yellow roses signify joy and friendship, unless your are from Texas and know the song “The Yellow Rose Of Texas.” Then, they mean that “she’s the only one for me.”
Then, there is chocolate—mmm. CocoaBella Chocolates are as delicious as they look. It’s almost a shame to eat them, so take a picture first. Though these beauties aren’t inexpensive, they definitely say “love.” Unless your romantic interest is on a diet, in which case they say “sabotage.”
You could call a local spa and get your love a certificate for a relaxing massage. Or, book a massage for two. It might be more romantic to order scented massage oils at About:Shopping and then find a bookstore to get a book about massage for stress relief. Have a romantic dinner at home, light candles and use your imagination.
Gifts.com has tons of ideas for him, her, children, teens, and other Valentines. Everything from rides in a hot air balloon to personalized t-shirts. You can get a Valentine’s “8 ball” or a personalized puzzle. I like that the site allows you to search for gifts under the personality and interest of the recipient. You probably could find anything you would want just on this particular site.
I spent a couple of hours just sorting through it. I found a LOT of things I would want for me. I’m still not sure what I want to get him. My husband is one of those people who go ahead and buy what they want when they want it, leaving nothing for me to give him. But, I’ll find something.
There is a site called Sprout that seems to be mostly about home and garden ideas. Under the Valentine listing, they had some hilarious do-it-yourself kits for cross stitch samplers. I can’t put them here, because they were “off-color” but you can go to the site to view it. You don’t have time to stitch them before Valentine’s, but you can look. They also had these bandages that just make me want to have an “ouchie.”

If you are an eco-friendly type of person, and if your love is as well, Oxfam America might have just what “ewe” want. Here’s what they have to say on their site:
Oxfam America works in 26 countries around the world. This catalog contains gift items that symbolically represent our work. The items selected represent project goals from grants disbursed by our seven offices around the world. The purchase of each gift item is a contribution toward Oxfam America’s many programs, not a donation to a specific project or goal. Your donation will be used where it is needed the most–to help people living in poverty throughout the world.
Or, in down-to-earth terms (what you really need to know):You purchase an item. The card goes to your friend. The gift goes to those who need it most.
You can give your Valentine a symbolic sheep for $45. Put a greeting on the card such as, “I’m not sheepish about it, I love ewe.” Or, “Wool you be my Valentine?” Or, not. It’s probably not very romantic, if that was your plan. But, it might do some good somewhere.
Even less romantic, but certainly a memorable gift, you could give a camel for only $175. I’m not certain what sentiment you could put on the card, but the–um–protuberances on his back could give rise to something naughty if you chose.
As for me, I’ve already received my Valentine’s gift. I got one of these babies:

This, my friends, is a SIX Deck Semi-Professional Card Shuffler from Casino Supply. Is it something I wanted? You bet. I told you in an earlier post that my husband and I like to play “Footsie.” And, we like to play a card game called Footsie which involves twenty decks of cards! Ordinarily, I prefer a gift that doesn’t have a warranty card attached, but this is just what I needed.
If any of you have any ideas for wonderful places to shop on-line, I’d love to hear from you. Send me a comment or an e-mail.

Well, I’m a little late on this one, but you might want to consider it for next year. I make a fondue for my love every year on Valentine’s. Since he was on a diet this year, we only did the cheese (hey, a man still has to eat SOMETHING, right?!) but usually follow that up with a yummy chocolate one too. Working so hard to hire a babysitter on a popular night only to go out to an over-priced meal at a crowded, noisy, UNromantic restaurant is not for me. He loves it every year.
Fondue sounds great! Especially if you can get the kids to go to bed early!~skt
