Two Reasons to Slow Down For Riesel, Texas

On Highway 6 between Waco and College Station, there is a tiny town called Riesel. Across from the Shell Station on the Highway is an antique store that is worth browsing. It’s a good reason to slow down and maybe even stop, if you are an antique hound.

I’m not sure what the building was originally, maybe a feed store. It’s packed full of treasures—junk, too. You may have to dig a little to find what you want, but it’s probably there. The picture below only shows about 1/8th of the store. The old codger who runs the place is a hoot. At first glance he seems rather gruff, but he will talk your arm off if you let him. Note ahead of time that the prices may seem steep. He seems rather proud of his wares. But, if you smile and engage him in conversation, he will bargain with you.

The second good reason to slow down is that it’s a speed trap. Usually there is a policeman lurking on the south side of town just waiting for a traveler with a “heavy foot.” If you smile and engage him in conversation, he will still write you a ticket.

I’m just sayin’.
