Blog Tip CONTEST
[You have to read to the bottom to get to the contest you seek!]

I started my adventure into blogging with very little knowledge and no expertise at all. In the last few months, I’ve learned a lot from reading other blogs and analyzing their layouts. I still have more questions than answers. I still lack expertise. Hopefully, one day, there will be enough traffic to this site that I can find people who will share their knowledge. I’m told the blogging community is a very helpful one.

Like all bloggers, I wanted the opportunity to put my thoughts before an audience. I also enjoy reading the ideas from other people and the people with whom they link. I’d like to build a community of people who have similar interests, but that’s difficult with a blog that really has no “focus.” This one doesn’t, because it is just my random musings.

How does one build that community? Most of my readers have been friends, family, and the folks who hire me. By putting my blog url on my e-mails, a lot of people come here to read. But, they aren’t bloggers and just lurk [FYI: if you are not a blogger, you CAN comment by clicking the “comment” link at the bottom of each post. I’d love to read what you have to say.].

I’ve listed my site on Technorati, put it up on Self Portrait Day, put Feedblitz on the site so people can subscribe to get notice of updates. Atom feed is turned on, but I know nothing about it OR RSS feed, so I’m stumped on that. I’ve “pimped” my site with a duplicate blog on MySpace. Does anyone have other suggestions?

I have randomly tried visiting other sites and commenting (when appropriate) and have gotten a bit of traffic that way. But, “random” searches don’t always lead me to bloggers with whom I have many shared interests. I don’t have enough knowledge yet to know how to find them. What do other people do? Where can I search?

Last Thursday when I was following links, I discovered the Thursday Thirteen meme. I wasn’t even smart enough to know what a “meme” was, but by following links I found enough information to be able to participate. That spiked my traffic AND took me to several bloggers whose work I want to read. I’ll definitely participate in that again.

There are other memes out there, but I don’t want this blog to be just about me answering questions or making a list. I still have other things about which I want to write–a folder full of things, in fact. Is there a meme I should know about? I’m not above answering silly questions about myself (I have no shame) but, I’d like one that will make me think. And, make other people think, too.

I also think that most of my topics are too long for the attention span of many people. I’m told that bloggers want to read it and get on to the next blog. I’m not sure I can change that. I’m not sure I want to change it. But, any suggestions from a reader would be helpful.

Yes, I put Google AdSense on my blog. I’d love for it to make at least enough to pay for my internet experience. Like every other blogger on the planet, I dream of being the next “Dooce.” I also fantasize about winning the lottery, but I don’t expect that to happen either.

But, AdSense takes away from the aesthetics of my blog, and it just completely confuses me. I’ve tried reading the material that Google puts on line, and it only makes me more muddled. It’s made several dollars, which is pretty amazing for as little traffic as I have. I don’t know how to take it a step further.

I don’t know enough about the computer to make my page more appealing. I’m experimenting, but I’m confined to the Blogger template, since I don’t know html. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I’d love to add links to other bloggers and interesting sites, but it just blends into the page. I’d like to put a picture banner across the top, but I don’t know how. I wish the doggone page were wider. Grrr. I wish I had a geek in my house to help me make this look the way I want it to appear.

Maybe someone has answers. Maybe I should have a contest and the best answer wins a prize. EUREKA!

So, it’s a CONTEST:
Give me your Top Five Suggestions for improving a blogger template (specifically mine!) AND/OR increasing traffic. Simply post a comment on this site to enter.

THE PRIZE:
I’ll mail the WINNER the choice of:
1. My copy of The Everything Blogging Book by Aliza Sherman Risdahl (with all the dog-eared pages) and my best wishes that it helps you more than it helped me!
OR
2. A $10 gift certificate to Starbucks Coffee (which might almost buy one cup).
RUNNER-UP:
Gets whatever the winner didn’t want.

ALL participants will receive a link from my site to theirs (exceptions: pornographic sites, those selling or distributing firearms, or those sites which maintain that Britney Spears is in any way relevant to life on this planet).

Contest winners are arbitrarily chosen by the judge (me). All decisions of the judge are final. Contest void where prohibited by law (which for some reason unknown to mankind is usually in Tennessee). All submissions will be available on the World Wide Web, unless the judge deletes it.

[Note: anyone who tells me to shut up and go away will get nasty comments on their blog from me and all my friend!]

Shelly,
I have found a few entertaining blog sites through the TT13, besides you this week, my other good find was http://islandlife808.com/
Look at her blog my blog, it’s a fun game of answering questions.

Since I am relatively new, I don’t have a lot of experience, but here is a blog that you should check out, she also has information about blogging.
http://rosedesrochers.todays-woman.net/links/

You have a niche in the type of job that you have-
Look into Blogher.com, you can list there and get more information.
http://www.blogher.org/

Blogger templates- I am right there with you, at least we can customize which is more than could be done last year at this time. I just know the basics of html and would love to learn more just to make my own template. I may look into some classes around here. The Wordpress looks interesting, but I just don’t don’t have that kind of time right now to learn about a new program.
Here is a good link about Wordpress:
http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Lessons

The Thursday 13 does increase traffic and you meet people (like me!) Here are some more memes that you may be interested in:
http://blogtalkers.wordpress.com/

This one looks like fun, but I am not sure how many participate, but it would be fun to write creatively: http://littlenibbler.blogspot.com/

Have you been to this site? It looks like the big Kahuna of Memes : http://thedailymeme.com/

In all my jumping around blogs, I have noticed that nurses and doctors have great blogs- either with a lot of technical information, or stories relating to their professions. With that, they have a lot of links to each other. I have not found a Medical Technology link…which I can’t quite figure out. Have you looked for other storytellers?

On a technical note about your blog template, the pictures that you have on top that move which I think it suppose to be on the left of the page, scroll across the top of the post on both Firefox and Safari, the two web browsers that I have on my mac. I guess it doesn’t happen on explorer.

Good luck in building a community, you got one so far!

Make that two in your community Shelly. Thanks for popping by my blog. You left a note for me so I decided to pop by and answer it here. Time Out does not mean I’m going off line, I’m here though in a couple of weeks I am off to Germany, Sicily and Malta….I love your visits and will certainly pop by you each day.
As for your blog today… like you I am a novice and have the Complete Idiots Guide to Blogging as my bible… it’s dog-eared too.
Jennymcb has lots of tips… I belong to a TRW - a romance writers organization in Canada and get feedback through that, and by popping around the bloggers on TT13 have increased traffic to my site.
I laughed at your Brittany Spears comment (poor soul etc. etc.) and would like to add Anna Nicole too.
I’m going to try some of Jennymcb’s suggestions…
I think you are adventurous getting the moving images… it has taken me forever to print pictures successfully. Good Luck I’ll be checking back to see what other comments you get.

Cool. I went out to explore Fort Worth (pronounced Foat Wuth) and came back to find some answers! Thank you Jenny & Robyn, for stopping by. I’ve got to write some notes on the shops I visited today, so I can write tomorrow. But, I’ll be raring to go on Jenny’s suggestions first thing in the morning.

Robyn, the moving images are simple if you have your images uploaded on the computer. I used Photobucket, but there are many different sites that allow you to host your images on-line. Photobucket allows you to make slide shows. It’s as easy as drag and drop.

Jenny,
I have a pc with windows explorer, and my pics are stuck confined in a box over on the side. Does it interfere with the text? Am I going to be sorry if I download Firefox? I haven’t looked for other storytellers…I’ll tell you about storytellers some time. Though I enjoy talking to folks who do the same thing for a living, I’d really like to meet people from all walks of life. If I run across a Medical Technology group, I’ll let you know. Thank you again!! I appreciate the tips. I hope someone else will, too.

Just found, through Jenny’s suggestions the site Blog about your Blog. http://blogaboutyourblog.com/
This guy has answer, I think about how to build traffic. Haven’t had time to read much. He also has a contest on Fridays. He picks the best comment and links to that site from his blog. Just a thought..

Yep, thanks to you, I have been trying to figure out how to change my blog. It is so limiting, not knowing the css and html stuff. I wanted to use a picture in my header and almost had it, but then I edited out a way to edit the text.
But here is another good site to check out for blogging how-tos:
http://bloggeruniversity.blogspot.com/

I like the idea of including quotes, not enough people read and think.

We think Muffin just likes a cleaner litter box, but I will be bringing them in soon to the vet and will have it checked out. She is one very weird cat, we think she was abused at her first home since she won’t let my boys pat her.

Hi Shelly,

You’ve already got a lot going for your blog: a great writing style! I’m certain you’ll find a great community of readers and meet interesting people along the way.

Jennymcb has some good suggestions and the Blogher network would be a great place to start. For me, blogging, like life, is about the journey, not the destination.

Thanks for the kind words, Alex. I appreciate that more than I can tell you. I’d visit your site and post you in links, but Blogger won’t let me go to your profile. Visit again sometime!
