Wordless Wednesday #5, Serena of the River

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on April 17, 2007

This is the statue of the “mermaid” (from the previous post) trying to pry the fish hook from her flesh. It is in the river in Salado, Texas and was freely given to the town.

Nice photo. I didn’t. It looks as if it’s in the middle of the country

EEk! I will always wonder what you “didn’t”. Thanks for stopping by.~skt

Stacie April 17, 2007 at 2:39 pm

That poor mermaid.

Yeah, she had it rough. Thanks for the visit.~skt

Great photo & story :-)

I’ve seen YOUR picture…this ain’t so hot in comparison, Mr. Your’s looks ethereal.~skt

What’s the magic you are using?

Sent you an e-mail with the link to CA plugins for WordPress. Thanks for visiting.~skt

That is such a lovely picture. I would love to have something like that in my garden.

I would, too! I had a statue I loved in my garden, but winds knocked it over a couple of weeks ago and broke it. Haven’t had the heart to examine her to see if she can be repaired. I appreciate the visit. Happy WW.~skt

FelineFrisky April 17, 2007 at 3:31 pm

She is beautiful. Who donated her? Did they design and create her, too?

D :)

I can’t remember the artist’s name, I’m sorry. It was a local fellow (local being Central Texas) who loved the story and I guess just wanted his work seen. She looks no more Native American than does the Little Mermaid!~skt

That’s a nice statue, and with a story to, that makes a change … You know what I mean they tend to just put things up and they have no story.

Well, being a storyteller, I like the story part…but it’s also nice to just see pictures sometimes. Thanks for dropping by~skt

Shaz@UsDanes April 17, 2007 at 3:46 pm

That’s a lovely photo & it’s nice to have the story to go with it x x

Thank you! I appreciate your visit, come again.~skt

Nice statue. Reminds me of the many mermaid statues in some Baltic and Scandinavian nations.

And, it looks more like a Scandinavian than a Comanche! Thanks for visiting.~skt

Nice sculpture – we have many in our town, which has become known as a sculpture mecca. We have a huge sculpture show every August, with artists from all over the world.

Thanks for stopping by my WW! Who’s Freda?

Freda, is my mistyping of Frida…as in Kahlo…the artist. I thought the girl in your picture looked like a budding artist. Thanks for dropping by to visit.~skt

Donna W April 17, 2007 at 4:50 pm

One of those sculptures you can hardly take your eyes off. Happy WW.

Well Donna, when my youngest son was about six, the story in the previous post was his favorite. I took him to see this statue, and he was appalled. He said, “Oh, Mommy, I wish I had never seen her! She was a lot prettier in here” tapping his head. I thought she looked just fine, but she didn’t fit his image, I guess. Thanks for coming over to visit.~skt

Love your new look! I had no idea that Texas had a mermaid too. I guess they really swim around, eh?

And, how nice to see you over at Seedlings.

Thanks, L.L., I’m still admiring the look myself. Yes, Texas supposedly had a mermaid. At least in the stories. I look forward to some of the recipes you plan to share soon. You are on my Bloglines feed now.~skt

TeaMouse April 17, 2007 at 5:11 pm

Nice statue – Now I have blog envy – your’s is looking fabulous and you have immediate comment links at the bottom to boot…woohoo!

You oughta check with Miss Annie over at Blog U and see if she can come up with a hack to reproduce it! There probably is one. This is a plug in for Word Press, and I thought it was pretty cool. Your blog looks pretty, too…what are you talking about “envy?” Good to hear from you, as always.~skt

Amber April 17, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Simply beautiful and what a perfect setting for her!

Hi Amber, unfortunately, the stream where she sits is unsafe to wade in, because of pollution. It looks beautiful, but it’s tainted. Isn’t that the pits?~skt

~Kayla~ April 17, 2007 at 6:26 pm

That’s a nice statue.

Have a great WW.

Thanks, Kayla. Come back again.~skt

Happy WW to you, too. Thanks for stopping by. ~skt

Linda April 17, 2007 at 7:27 pm

Beautiful picture and story to go with it. That’s not something I would expect to see in Texas!

Thanks Linda, I’m not sure what you expected to see in Texas…~skt

Karen (Miscellaneous Mum) April 17, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Mermaids always get screwed over in fairy tales, don’t they? Thanks for visiting me :)

I love visiting your blog. Thanks for coming back to mine! It’s not just mermaids that have the problems…it’s females in general! Have you read many of the Grimm’s Brothers Fairy Tales? There is a reason they are called “grim”!!~skt

Melli April 17, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Ohhhhh she’s beautiful!

She’s a lot of fun to see. In the moonlight, she is awesome…but it’s hard to get a picture that way!~skt

Kristy April 17, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Great photo. You are teaching me all sorts of Texas history.

Naah! Kristy, I’m “spinning yarns” for you.~skt

Jen April 17, 2007 at 8:34 pm

Did my first wordless instead of the work I brought home. In Copenhagen the poor little mermaid gets all types of inappropriate things put on her, does that happen in Texas?

I wouldn’t doubt that she has suffered plenty of indignities from the rowdy Texan teenagers!~skt

elasticwaistbandlady April 17, 2007 at 8:43 pm

I love Serena because she’s still pure and untainted by the Disney production machine. You know, Ariel has been in and out of rehab for years now, and rumor has it that she also has crabs!

That rumor sounds kind of “fishy” to me…~skt

Rav`N April 17, 2007 at 8:45 pm

great picture of a beautiful but kind of sad picture

It’s a little bit sad, but I keep in mind that it’s just a story. Thanks for the visit~skt

Interesting mermaid statue! I also photograph mermaid statues…something we have in common! Happy WW!

I’ll have to check that out! I don’t photograph many mermaid statues…that’s the only one I’ve seen!~skt

madd April 17, 2007 at 9:38 pm

I love this..mermaids are such wonderful creatures, this one is simular to one I would like to put by our pool, only she is holding a conch shell from which water flows back into the pool..beautiful, thanks..happyWW

That sound like a lovely fountain to have. Mosquitoes would carry one away around here! Happy WW to you, too~skt

Awesome! I love statues and this one is magnificent. Thanks for sharing.

I’m off to find that plug-in now and I love how you comment on the comments. Is that a plug in too or part of the theme?

Missy, the comments aren’t a plug-in. One-by-one I take the time to edit, because I appreciate y’all stopping by.~skt

Beautiful statue and again my condolences to your loss.

Once again, many thanks~skt

Marcia April 17, 2007 at 11:48 pm

This comment set up is awesome. . . I love the individual boxes, gives comments the importance they deserve. I need to think on what I want, for at least one of my blogs, I have header ideas, but that is as far as I got. . . kind of. Off subject – oops.

This is a great photo of the mermaid. I will be back in the morning to read the accompanying story – and finish reading your post on the comment problem, so I can see if mine is the “annoying kind”.

“s ok. You can get on a different topic. At least I know you are reading, and not just linking. Thanks for that!~skt

Thanks, Green Eyed Girl! I appreciate your visit.~skt

Rayne April 18, 2007 at 8:04 am

what an incredible statue, it makes me feels sort of sad for her spending eternity trying to remove that fish hook.

Maybe she got it out of there…I don’t know…it’s not part of the story. So, I guess a real storyteller would just make something up, wouldn’t she? Thanks for stopping by.~skt

Rosemarie April 18, 2007 at 8:06 am

I worked in a gallery for a short time but was briefed on the process of what goes into a statue. Beautiful! Happy WW!

Thanks for stopping by. I don’t know how statues are made, but I’m impressed when someone makes one! Happy WW to you, too~skt

Danielle April 18, 2007 at 9:41 am

I really like this picture and statue. I think it is wonderful that is was gifted to the city, it shows the giving soul of the artist.

Thanks for sharing
Be well and enjoy the day

Thanks, Danielle. I hope your day is good as well. Thanks for stopping by.~skt
