To: The Clan

I’m heading out to a school to try to paint some pictures with words. I’ll be regaling elementary school students with folk tales and fairy tales. There will be long breaks between sessions, and it will be difficult to keep up my energy for the full day (because I’m no spring chicken, anymore!). But, it will be worth it just to watch the expressions on the faces of those children as they get carried away by their imaginations.

Since performances are in the library, I’m never bored while waiting for the next class to visit. I flip through books and scribble notes to myself on my calendar. I can never find what I’m supposed to actually be doing on any given day in my calendar, because of all that “henscratching.” That’s how my Daddy used to describe my handwriting. As a calendar, this book is worthless; but for ideas to ponder it is a gold mine.

Last week, I jotted down this quote:

“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.
Jane Howard, “Families”

For those of you who visit regularly, the ones who drop in now and again, for those of you I visit, and those who have just found this site:

Thanks for being part of my “clan.”
I love getting to read your stories—-the pictures you paint with your words. I’ll catch up with you this evening.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

P.S. If you don’t tell me you were here, how can I find you? I don’t mind if you lurk; I do that sometimes, too. But, if you are of a mind to do so you can leave a comment and then I can come and visit.

They had a story-hour at the local library in Mission Viejo where I grew up. You could call a recording to hear who the storyteller was. We went a lot. Too bad you are so far away, I’d try and get you for “Read Across America,” a celebration of the life of Dr. Seuss at my school. Hope you had an amazingly rewarding day!

Ooh, ooh, I like being part of your clan.

I think as clan members we should catch a glimpse of your calendar of ideas — if only to know how your daddy defined “henscratching”. cool

Henscratching is not pretty! It gets worse as the arthritis progresses. I learned how to write left-handed last summer and although it’s slower, its better penmanship! Go figure. I’m glad you are part of the clan, too.~skt

I’m a sporadic visitor, but I always enjoy my stay!

My Aunt Linda is a storyteller: http://www.lindagoodmanstoryteller.com/ (((((HUGS))))) sandi

Your Aunt Linda is an excellent storyteller! It’s a small world! Thanks for the visit and for telling me about your connection to her.~skt

A writer named Shelly came up with a plan
A blog she would write and so it began
She’d tell many a tale..sad, funny, maybe even hectic
All representing our lives…so awesomely eclectic
This writer named Shelly, yes, that was her plan
I just don’t think she believed she’d have so many fans!

(That is supposed to be a poem but I’m afraid the formatting is going to get screwed up when I hit “submit”)

Honored to be part of the clan!!!

You are indeed a part of it! Thanks for the poem! I’m so glad you didn’t write a limerick; think of what you could have done with my last name,”Tucker!”~skt

What a terrific quote. Sometimes I feel better understood by the family of friends I chose, rather than some of those I just got in the old genetic crapshoot. And odd though this may seem, sometimes I feel I’m more honest with the sister bloggers I chat with online because I have the advantage of remaining anonymous.

Robert Redford gave an interview a few years ago where he credited his original clan for his director’s eye. He comes from a long line of story tellers who literally spoke their tales. He said this helped him appreciate the narrative and character development, because story tellers can’t do noisy car crashes, major explosions or intergalactic fire fights.

I know what you mean about having that cloak of anonymity. But, Robert Redford’s storytellers were missing something if they couldn’t tell car crashes and major explosions. I’ve got one word for him: “You ought to know something about Onomatopoeia!” I can spell it, but I can’t count. lol ~skt

Hey Shelly- I am liking clan better than cult, LOL, now I think a scanned page of your calendar would be interesting. But we all saw your pocketbook, so I can imagine what your calendar would look like.

I love libraries, I should have been a school librarian! What is your favorite picture book?

How were the kids today? Full of energy on a Monday, I bet!

lol Let’s not even think “cult!” Scanned page of my calendar? You wouldn’t be able to read it! My handwriting is sad…very sad. I love libraries, too. Favorite picture book? Too many to name. The kids were bouncing off the walls and ceiling. School is out Thursday and they can’t wait. I don’t think the teachers can wait, either wink ~skt

Shelly,

Your “Commenter Appreciation Post” is up on my site. Do come for a visit.

That was so wonderful! I tried to comment and lost it, (the comment, not “it”) so I’ll come back over and try again.~skt

It’s really true that on our blogs we build clans. I’ve thought about all the people I’ve come to know through blogging that I wouldn’t have met any other way. It’s good to be part of someone’s (or many people’s) clan.

It’s very good to have that extended family! Tomorrow, I’m going to try to spend half my day just catching up on all my friends. I have you in my reader, but it never does justice to websites, and I don’t get to comment. Thanks for stopping by and being part of our clan.~skt

What a sweet post. And, I must say, I love that image of you telling stories to elementary school children — fairy tales and myths and folk stories are so important to children in this electronic age. Shelly — that is a beautiful thing you’re doing. Many will remember you, and your stories for their entire lives.

Thanks, SusieJ. Remember that I get paid to do it, so maybe it’s not so “beautiful” in some senses of the word. I do love getting to share, though.~skt

I’m a lurker…. guilty as charged. But here I now “comment”, out in the light for all to see. I read your blog weekly or so, and I enjoy it. Thanks for calling attention to my rude, lurking ways… it won’t happen again.

I don’t think its rude to lurk, I just don’t think we can find you if you do! Thanks for commenting—and for coming by to visit.~skt

I like the idea of a “clan.” It’s a nice word and so cozy. And I feel the same way about comment as you. Love ‘em! It only takes a second and it means so much.

Have a great week.

Thanks for commenting, Mimi. I like the idea of a clan, too. I like comments, because it usually means a new person to visit!~skt
