Damien, over at Riley Central got introspective for his 38th birthday. He started a meme listing 8 Things I Know (but then he changed his website and I can’t find the link.) His list is profound, and I don’t know how we are supposed to add to that. He had started to list 38 things, but fortunately thought better of it. Whew! He’s tagged a lot of intelligent people, and he tagged me, too. I’m feeling a bit thunderstruck.
Dang, y’all! If ignorance is bliss, I’m a “blisster.” This almost “steps” on a post I have for later this week of Things My Daddy Taught Me, but, let me give it a whirl. Maybe I can list the things Daddy forgot, the common sense knowledge I think we all should have. Here are
-
1) Slow down and enjoy the road. Sometimes, “the trip” is more fun than “the destination.” Those side roads can hold all kinds of wonders! Oh, the things we can miss if we narrowly focus on our “goals” and nothing else!
2) Don’t be afraid to switch horses in midstream. You might get wet, but end up on a better horse! It’s alright to change your goals in life. If things aren’t working for you, try a new direction.
3) The longer you nurse a grudge, the longer it takes to heal. Anger is a festering wound that hurts only you. Learn to forgive.
4) Don’t hit the “send” button until you have thought about your words twice. This also applies to speaking, people. Words are powerful. They can heal or harm. Once said, they will be remembered.
5) You can’t spot a diamond in the rough unless you keep a “sharp eye peeled.” There are a lot of people who are “diamonds in the rough.” That person who seems snooty may be shy; the one who seems overbearing might be insecure; the one who seems “uneducated” might not have “booklearning,” but be full of common sense. Look hard before you write anyone off as “not your kind.” Sometimes, below the surface, you can find a gem.
6) If you leave the house without grooming yourself, you’ll wind up on the 6:00 news. Appearance isn’t everything, but it counts.
7) People are more important than things.
8) When you say goodbye to those you care about, always tell them you love them. You can’t say, “I love you” too often. And, we never know when will be the “last time” we talk to someone.
Now, y’all know to take these with “a grain of salt.” Consider the source, after all.

You’re too damn smart for being so young. And pretty. And sweet. And did I mention smart? I haven’t learned nearly as much, but I’ll share what I do know.
Hmm…Hey Leanne…are you commenting at the right blog! It’s Shelly! You must have thought you were at somebody else’s place
I ‘magine you’ll come up with a pretty powerful list.~skt
You are a smart cookie! I haven’t started working on mine yet, but I think this is going to turn out to be a pretty interesting tag. I’m curious to see what everyone writes
I so love “Appearance isn’t everything, but it counts”…after my meeting with the filthy dirty therapist, I could not agree more!!!

Horses midstream . . . so you, so true!!!
I’m pretty much a master at the switching
!~skt
Good to know about diamonds in the rough. I forget sometimes. I like the horses in the midstream — we have more power than we realize. I’m on this — but first I tagged you for another long over-due one.
OOPS! Better go check it out then. I was sitting here piddling with my sidebar! ~skt
Wow, You really are more than just a story teller. . . and maybe the young do know more, but I think it is just because y’all remember more than us “old folks”. . . Why, I know all the things on your list and Damien’s, too. Just don’t remember them long enough to write them!
Diamonds in the rough, live it, never thought of wording it that way, just thought of it as looking beneath the surface, but I would much rather be a diamond in the rough than just something laying under the surface!;-)
Sweetie, you know full well I’m only a couple of years behind you, so don’t be calling me young. You are a multi-faceted jewel~skt
P.S. – I just noticed your three bottom columns, Iwent to the three column bottom on one of my blogs last week, but have no side column at all. I had tried to have one slightly different but the person that helped me with it couldn’t make it work on blogger. . . Love the bottom three columns, I am adding them to several of my other blogs until I get my Wordpress.org going. Then I plan on figuring out the one addition I want. Great minds think alike?
Yeah, I like getting the stuff off the side a little. I guess great minds DO!~skt
I like all eight of them but I wish I could plaster number five on a billboard. So important.
Yep, and so easy to forget even when you know better!~skt
Okay, now I will pay attention to what I wear and just have to say that your ads today are about carpet stretching. Why do I get such a perverse thrill reading your ads?
You are intelligent and now I have to think of something for tomorrow. Got to go see that wizard about my brain on order.
Go sit and think of things you never thunk before, and then sit and think some more…Scarecrow.
Should I try putting different key words in the blog so we can get Google ads that make you giggle?~skt
i love all eight of them! such a very thoughtful and insightful post.
Thanks! Go read some of the others…they are good!~skt
#4 is so true! I have had that experience before. I think sometimes with email it’s too easy to send something off before it’s been well thought out. There is something to writing a letter to the person you’re mad at and then throwing it away. Hurtful words can never be unspoken.
I don’t post on weekends a lot, so I just got the tag and I did mine up jiffy quick!
This boating stuff sure gets in the way of blogging. I’m on it…
Hey, I’m glad you aren’t addicted to blogging and still know how to have fun
~skt
It’s up Shelly.
Yes, and it’s fantastic! Thanks for going to the hard work that you did!~skt
You have some link love on my “Eight Things” meme. Some things just start to pour out unexpectedly and for good reason. My hope is that my mistakes and insight can help another.
Thank you, Rosemarie. I look forward to seeing those “eight” You are a very wise woman.~skt
