Bloomberg “lives like a New Yorker?”

I never watch the news, y’all, so I am sadly out of touch. I find out about Paris Hilton’s newest escapades many days after the fact, and have to rely on Jessica The Rock Chick to keep me informed. Thank goodness she knows everything.

I have no clue about the latest murders in the news or the most recent political blah blah. Politics is beyond my ken, anyway. However, my spousal unit and I actually watched NBC news last night (because we were both too lazy to reach for the remote control) and saw an interview with New York City’s Mayor, Michael Bloomberg.

It seems the man’s name has been bandied about as a possible presidential candidate. He was called “The Billionaire Who Can’t Be Bought.” How refreshing to hear him talk about how he was going to have New York set an example for the rest of the country by going green. Imagine, New York City being the leader in environmental innovation for the United States of America!

Bloomberg said that in his own home he had switched all the light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs to save 60% in lighting energy per year. He plans to do that in city offices, as well. He talked about planting trees and how that would put oxygen back into the atmosphere. What grand plans he has of reducing carbon emissions by encouraging mass transit and actually discouraging people from driving in midtown Manhattan by charging for it. He has set a goal for New York City to reduce carbon emissions by 30% in the next 23 years.

Bloomberg claims that he “lives like a New Yorker.” He portrays himself as the image of the Common Man. He even rode the subways during the interview (instead of riding around in a limousine), just like a regular person.

Except, that most New Yorker’s don’t have the luxury of being guarded by two of New York’s finest police officers! And, when the interview was finished, Bloomberg hopped on his private jet to fly off to God knows where! That’ll save some energy, won’t it?

Oh, the difficult life of the Common Man! Am I the only person who thinks this is ironic?

Well Shelly, Al Gore does the same thing. Look at the energy he uses with that mansion of his. They are celebs and that is all there is to it. When they talk everyone is supposed to listen and heed their advice. Talking heads I call them. Girlfriend…it’s all about their name in print and the bling-bling. Period. Excellent post on IRONY! )

Thanks, Sandee. Actually, I think they all do the same thing too. I agree about Al Gore. I don’t even know if Bloomberg is Republican or Democrat, and it doesn’t matter to me. It just sounds like he’s talking out of one side of his mouth and then the other.~skt

Yes, that’s what I call irony, alright! And if I say it is, then it must be because I know everything )

I don’t know much about him either except that he came after Guiliani…how do you buy a billionaire anyway? I’d like one of those around the house )

They just had on our news that they want to institute that “pay a ton of money” if you insist on driving during rush hour thing here. Personally, I’d rather not drive in rush hour traffic at all, but society demands that I you know work and pick up my children. Until I can wiggle my nose and they magically appear somewhere, I have no choice.

I guess if you live in Chicago, you could possibly take public transportation, but I don’t have 12 hours a day to ride suburban buses everywhere I would need to go, if they even go where I need to go. They were just talking about making a bus ride like $5 or something here, too.

Insanity.

Jessica

Yes, it is insanity, and I’m certainly not the one to come up with answers. Mass transit in Texas is a joke because we are so spread out. But, the government is trying to do something about it. If I had to try to park in a big city, I’d try mass transit for sure.~skt

I live in NYC, and know the mayor takes the subway everyday and everywhere, is really trying to encourage everyone in the city to do that. Unlike other cities, NYC does have great mass transit. Anyways, even though it might a bit ironic that he uses a private plane, at least he is trying something.

I’ll give him that much credit Jon. I don’t live there, and you do—so I take your word on it. I was getting excited hearing of his plans until I heard about the jet. That fuel used in the private jet negates a whole lot of the carbon emissions he saves by taking the subway.~skt

EXACTLY. And Hiliary has been looking at life through the window of a limo too. She’s no longer one of the “people.”

Was Hillary ever one of the people? lol ~skt

LOL! Well, yes it’s ok…and anybody else can, too! I somehow doubt my server will get overloaded over the mayor! Thank you, SusieJ. ~skt

Hi Shelly - I’ll tell you where Mr. Bloomberg flies off to in his private jet.
Bermuda.
How do I know this? Because I lived there up until a short time ago and MB has a beautiful house in and exclusive gated community called Tucker’s Town and plays weekend rounds at the uber-pricey, private Mid-Ocean golf course.
But really - is it any different to those non-billionaires who go off to their weekend houses in Connecticut, or Kennebunkport, etc…?

Naw, Wylie, it isn’t any different. I don’t mind him being able to enjoy the benefits of being rich. It just seems odd to me that he didn’t opt to take public transportation, since that’s what he espouses.~skt

Yep, he’s conscious about conserving energy, but he never agreed to walk everywhere either. -)

LOL! I think his ideas are good, but it’s hard to justify that private jet fuel~skt
