Y’all know how strangely the mind works in your sleep. Have you ever had crazy dreams? Like one about being wildly chased by a giant bottle of Dr. Pepper, but in front of you is an enormous peanut M&M (a red one, so you know what that could mean) with it’s arms outstretched and leering at you; and your heart is racing and you don’t know where to turn, because if you go to th….
What?
………….. You haven’t ever had a dream like that?
You know what I mean. Dreams can be crazy! I used to dream that I could fly. Yes, I could just soar into the air like an eagle. I’m told that dreams of flight aren’t uncommon among children, and I certainly had them regularly. I guess I dreamed of flying so often that in my waking hours I believed it!
One day, those bully-girls who lived down the street decided to pick on a skinny little weakling—-me! They called me names and threatened me with grievous bodily harm. I wasn’t afraid, in fact I taunted right back at ‘em and even stuck out my tongue.
Whoo! That did it. They came barreling towards me; but I nonchalantly turned, with a wicked grin on my face, and started hopping up and down. I was trying to fly! Nothing happened; at least, I didn’t rise into the sky. What did happen is that I got the sass whupped out of me that day.
C’mon. Tell me that you have had strange dreams.
Not long ago, I had another strange dream. I dreamed I was a pot of paint [don't y'all go making fun]. I was white paint, but feeling very sad because I longed to be colorful. I wanted to be bold and vibrant so badly that I almost cried out with the pain of it.
A gentle Voice spoke. It seemed to be coming from all around me as It asked in a whisper, “What color do you want to be?”
“Oh!” I squeaked. “Yellow! Make me bright and sunny, or no—wait. Orange! That’s what I want to be; or no, maybe green. Green is soothing, that’s the one. But, purple is so pretty…”
“You have to choose one,” said the Voice.
“Only one?” I cried.
“One,” the Voice replied.
“Okaaaay,” I pouted. “I know. I want to be blue! Everybody loves blue.”
“Is that your final answer?” the Voice whispered.
“Final answer,” I said. “Blue, final answer.”
And, I was blue; light blue the color of the sky. I was the color of my Daddy’s eyes.
A huge artist’s paintbrush came out of the sky, and I was thrilled. “Use me!” I called out.
The brush dipped into the blueness of me, and spread me across an enormous canvas that stretched as far as I could see. “More,” I said. “I want to be bigger.”
Once again, the brush dipped and spread blue across the canvas.
“NO!” I called out. “MUCH more. I want to be huge!”
That brush spread me all over the canvas. I was everywhere. Blueness was all that could be seen. Then, the view in my dream zoomed out. I saw before me a magnificent landscape painting. I was only one tiny speck on the canvas. It took many colors to make a masterpiece.
In my waking hours, I have a dream to provide afghans to comfort children with cancer. I want each afghan to be crafted by many hands. I’m just a tiny part of the picture; I happened to be the first color used. It takes many colors to make the masterpiece complete. Will you be part of the colors of my dream?

I am so thrilled to be one of the colors! I’m getting my hook warmed up and I’ll be crafting away like a maniac!!!! I hope to send you a parcel by the end of the month and with any luck I’ll get squares from these other ladies as well…I’m asking the Good Lord to help me win ‘em over.
Have a great weekend!
INDEED! You are definitely one of the colors, Sweet Tea. Thanks for helping me get this going! Not only were you inspiration, you jumped right in there to help me publicize and pull together ideas. I’m relying on you. Send me a small envelope with one or two just as soon as you can, because I definitely want one of YOURS on the first afghan!~skt
Ohhhhhhhh, I love your dream story!!! Fabulous!!! I’m going to look it up in my dream interpretation books. I have all kinds of crazy dreams (are you shocked? ) and I really think there’s a lot of insight in them….
One thing, though, I really believe that it’s the green M&M’s and not the red ones that are supposed to do, you know “that”. I could be wrong and perhaps that’s why it doesn’t work
Still on the lookout for knitters for you, too
I’ll let you know when I interpret this for you
Jessica The Rock Chick
I don’t know which M& Ms do “that” but when you interpret THAT dream, you’ll probably just find that the dreamer had indigestion

I find it interesting that you picked blue because “everybody likes blue.” If it were me, I would pick yellow because I like it . . . who cares what other people like!!!
Ah, Damien. Well, in my dreams I guess *I* care what other people like. What can I say? I thought it was more interesting that I was a pot of paint

I have blue all through my house, but this is not about my house. I don’t have strange dreams like that.
Great dream story, but you outdid yourself with the “I happened to be the first color used,” analogy.
Is outdoing myself “good?” I can’t believe you don’t have strange dreams, Marcia…especially ones about being chased by giant Dr. Pepper bottles

Beautiful story. If you don’t mind, I’d like to make this a summer project. I’m going to see if any other ladies here in Taiwan want to join in. We have a “Gilmore Girls” night every Tuesday this summer, and this would be a fun thing to do while watching.
I’ll let you know what I can get together. Is there a certain due date?
Stacy, that would be wonderful! That will make the quilts “international!” I’m thrilled about that. There isn’t a “due” date, BUT if you want to send one or two squares as soon as possible, there is a local library willing to kick off a Share A Square Day, and have the local crochet club put together the FIRST afghan. I’d love to have squares in it from as many different places as I can. More on that today…I hope. Let me know if you can do that!~skt
I just loved this story. I have had weird dreams, but not quite as weird as being chased by a giant bottle of Dr. Pepper. M and M’s haven’t been there either. I would be in a sweat I think. You are right…it does takes all the colors to create a masterpiece. I think I’ll be pink! You do storytell very, very well. Have a great weekend.
Well, I hope you don’t drink about Dr. Pepper’s & M&Ms! They are scary
! Pink you are, my dear Sweet Friend. It tickles ME pink that you are enthusiastic!~skt
I loved your dream! We all want to be a color that everyone loves!
So, you need granny squares? I haven’t crocheted granny squares before, but I’m willing to give it a try!!
Most people would want to be a color everyone loves. Granny squares I need. I bet you can do it. It just takes a chain stitch and a double crochet. Easy. And, I want your help, you know I do!~skt
I do not remember my dreams. I know I have them, but the evaporate before I’m fully conscious. Sometimes I carry a “feeling” with me all day, sometimes they come back to me in a flash, but I very rarely remember them. Probably because my awake life is more than enough entertainment!
Although I haven’t yet publicized the afghan on my blog, I will. And my poor, long-suffering mom is going to attempt to teach me to crochet while she’s visiting this weekend. I do so many things with my hands, but fibercraft is NOT one of them! LOL I promise I will only send squares I’d consider keeping!
This is a wonderful thing you’re doing.
I bet your awake life IS full of entertainment!
I hope that you do learn crochet. This afghan square is really simple (I’m not able to master complicated stitches, believe me…that’s why I chose this!). But, I have to correct your last sentence: This is a wonderful thing WE are doing. I’m not in it alone!~skt
Your wonderful dream story gave me goosebumps. I want to have THAT dream—tonight. Maybe if I eat enough M & M’s…BTW, I checked with Wikipedia, it IS the green ones that do “that”.
Dawn, you goofy girl. I’m so glad to know it’s the green M&Ms! I was scared there for awhile, you know!~skt
My waking dream is one that is going to come true from the looks of things. Thanks for visiting~skt
