Folks, I think the workers at my post office are going to be ready to slap me into next week before this Share A Square project is done! I first posted about this last week, and already the response is overwhelming. This first square arrived in the mail today from Janet in Idaho. Thank you, Janet! She sent this so it would be on the first quilt (which will be assembled on July 19th), and promises more. Many people have told me that squares are on the way! People in Canada, Taiwan, Australia, the UK, Spain and all over the United States are saying they want to help. If all goes as expected, my mailbox will be overflowing!
By the way, can anyone translate a crochet pattern to Spanish? My friend Lola in Spain comes to read my blog frequently. Fortunately, she speaks enough English to be able to translate what I say (though if she thinks that what I write is “English,” then I have some sad news: it’s “Texan,” and there is a difference!). Lola has a lovely website showing the jewelry she makes, and another that is devoted to the things she loves. That sweetheart put the Share A Square logo on her site, even though she doesn’t crochet. She says that people are interested in helping, but can’t understand English to read the pattern.
Here is a link to a picture of the squares, Lola; it’s over at Vixen’s Den. I bet if you ask her, she will be happy to let you copy and post the picture on your site. Maybe if they see it, your friends will know how it is put together.
There is a forum called “Etsy” with a lot of knitters and crocheters who have been asking if they can send knitted squares for the afghans. After conferring with my Official Coach, TeaMouse at TeaTime Ramblings, I’m told that YES, we can take knitted squares! As long as the squares are 6 (six) inches, we are good to go.
Once again, here is the link to the crochet pattern that I first proposed. Get creative if you want. Make the square one color or many. As long as we get these afghans made, I’ll be thrilled with anything you send. In fact, if you go to this link at Etsy, you can get a free pattern for a square that has a yellow cancer ribbon in the center of it! How cool would that be? Tara designed that—many thanks to you, Tara!
Sharon wrote to ask me about deadlines and goals. She asked, “are you going to make it an on going thing?” Good question. Camp Sanguinity for this year will be the first week of July, so there is no way to get them to the kids this year. But, they are thrilled to get them for next year. HOWEVER, I think we are going to get many more squares than are needed for just Camp Sanguinity. I’ve asked Teamouse to check and see if there is a cancer camp in her area of Saskatchewan. She jumped on board this train 15 minutes after it “left the station.” If she has a camp near her, then we can supply that camp as well. Let me know if there is a cancer camp in your area, or if your child attends a camp. I’m willing to work on it for as long as people want to help.
If you are helping, please make sure your link is on the BLOGROLL! I’m not swift enough to catch all of them, and I want your name listed. Just tell me here, and I’ll add it!
Right now, I gotta go crochet! Catch you later. And, once again:
I’m in awe of your kindness!
[EDITOR'S NOTE: The Share A Square project has ended, and the afghans were delivered on July 7th, 2008. Although we will not continue that project, an exciting NEW endeavor, called the Good Medicine Project is in progress for summer camp 2009. We hope you will join us.]

Shelly,
I sent an email to Lola with a spanish-language granny pattern I found. It turns out its not as easy as just translating english into spanish, as their crochet terms are different. I found them here (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Woods/9839/puntos.html) and was able to then understand enough to find her a pattern that could work
And Lola is more than welcome to my pictures!
You are a lifesaver, Vixen. I didn’t quite know what to do for her, but if folks in Spain want to crochet for it, I’d LOVE to be able to add their squares to an afghan! Thank you~skt
Shelly,
I sent Lola and email with a pattern I think she can use. It is not as easy as just translating it as Spanish crochet terms are different (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Woods/9839/puntos.html)
She is more than welcome to use my pictures too!
Got it twice…sorry it went to Spam the first time…~skt

You are no fool! But, you can crochet, for sure! I love the bright colors (took a peek at your blog). I can’t wait to get them, the kids are going to love the colors. Thank you!!! ♥ ~skt
Wow, I just popped over to see Yellow Rose’s squares - they are gorgeous!
I am off to my yarn shoppe tomorrow I’m just jonesing for some brights to work with and I can’t wait for my scraps to come from working on my ripple. I’m just like a little kid in a candy store.
Aren’t those squares of hers lovely? Her squares look like a candy store! I envy your trip to the yarn store…I can’t let me go there. I already have a room full from when I used to weave. You know, back when I had a life instead of a blog ROFLMAO! ~skt
Oh I went to see the squares designed by Tara and they say sold out
I hope that I can get one.
Hmm. Maybe she will see this and swoop in to tell us something…~skt
