Yesterday, these lovely crocheted squares came in the mail. Forgive the lighting, please. It’s dark and rainy here in Texas. These are from Yellow Rose’s Garden in Georgia, Life in Westcliffe in Colorado, and By Hook or Needlesfrom Connecticut. Thank you ladies for your support! Those are beautiful, and the kids at Camp Sanguinity are going to love them.
If I wanted to do it, this afternoon I could put together two of the 140 afghans we need for the children at Camp Sanguinity. But, I’m not gonna do it, because right now I only have squares from seven different states. I want as many different hands as possible to be involved with each afghan. I want those children to cuddle up in these afghans and know that they are not alone. Many people care about them. I know that you do.
I’ve spoken to a representative of Camp Sanguinity to ask more about the camp. Jill told me that the camp is for cancer patients and their siblings, and that it is just a “normal” camp for kids. At Camp Sanguinity, those children don’t have to feel “different.” No one asks, “Why don’t you have hair?” or “What are those scars?” They are with other children who understand their situation.
There is archery, horseback riding, swimming, hiking, crafts, games and more. All of it is in an environment where the children can feel free to challenge themselves to do whatever they feel capable of doing. The children with cancer have an opportunity for counseling, and their siblings get a little counseling and support on dealing with their feelings about the cancer of their brother or sister. How wonderful is that?
I’m getting excited about this Share A Square project, because help is coming from many different places. Lola, in Spain, told me that she needed the instructions for the squares in Spanish, and Vixen’s Den jumped right in to send them to her. Lola, I wish I had enough Spanish in my head to be able to say more than “Gracias, Amiga.” And, Vixen, there aren’t enough words in English to tell you how much I appreciate you.
Many people are writing me to tell me that they are sending squares. I know that those squares are going to start arriving daily. But, I have to tell y’all that right now I’m getting a little shaky. The Colony Public Library is opening it’s doors for the first Share A Square Day on July 19th for the whole afternoon and evening. The Happy Hookers will be there to put together the afghans and crochet more squares. People from the community will be dropping by to help, too. I hope I will have squares for the afghans from all over the place, not just Texas. Send me a handful of square as soon as you have them to:

Matty has asked if folks can send money. Well, no. This isn’t an established non-profit organization, it’s just a grass roots effort. I don’t want your money. I want your time, and the effort from your heart. People who can’t crochet are spreading the word by posting about the project or putting the logo on their site. I’m reciprocating by creating a SAS’S Blogroll . I may not have caught every link, so let me know if you are playing a part in the project. Just post one of these symbols (courtesy of Teamouse)on your website. All you have to do is copy the tiny text, paste it on your website, and take out the three asterisks (*).:

Friends, I don’t beg often. I don’t beg well. But, for this charity, I’m willing to do so. Please help in any way that you can.
I have several stories percolating in my brain right now, and I’ve been too pre-occupied to post them. I hope to post one of them later in the day. Y’all enjoy yourselves today, and come back to see me.
[EDITOR'S NOTE: The Share A Square project has ended, and the afghans were delivered on July 7th, 2008. Although we will not continue that project, an exciting NEW endeavor, called the Good Medicine Project is in progress for summer camp 2009. We hope you will join us.]

I hope my package gets there in time.
I am working away on more all the time - I think I have made about 18 since Saturday and I want to make a big box and send them later on once I have enough to fit into a fair size box.
It’s so great to see this all coming together, aren’t people amazing?
More on the way soon. Bigger ones
I look forward to it! You razzin’ me?
back!~skt
I’ve got the button up at my place, and will be sending some squares from southern Cali soon! Great idea!!!
Thanks. I’ve added you to the blogroll. I appreciate the help!~skt
I can’t crochet, but I’ll snag a button. What you’ve received is beautiful — love the colors!
You should see them rimmed in black and side by side. They are really fanastic. Thanks for helping pass along the word.~skt
There was a comment left of my blog that said they followed your square instructions and even though they didn’t know how to crochet, they were able to make one.
I’m gonna give it the old college try!!!

You can do it! “Course, I don’t know which college you went to, but if you need more simplified instructions, I put some together for another person. Tell me, and I’ll e-mail them to you.~skt
Well my mom on vacation in Nova Scotia made her first last night and it’s 6 inches! My friend who was over on Saturday taught her 14 y/o and they have 29 made…it’s taking off! Both of us went out and got a few lighter colors. I wish I could be there on the 19th, it’s going to be amazing at the rate we are all going! Thank you Shelly for getting us off the computer and crocheting!
Yes, but I miss the compuuuuter! Tell your mom and your friend to pop a couple in the mail ASAP so they can be on the first afghan! Actually, I think we are going to make several afghans that first day. I wish I could get ALL of you here for that. I’ve bought my lottery ticket, and we’ll see what happens. BWAHAHAH!
Nothing. That’s what’s going to happen. I wasted another $5! But, it’s a nice thought.~skt
Hang in there, the squares will come!
SO glad you got my first package!! I have another one that will be on it’s way by the end of this week!! I’ve been working on my squares every day!
Getting faster too!! LOL
You’ve been linked three times! Please add Miscellaneous Matter to your SAS blogroll. I wish I could help more. I even added your button my sidebar, which I don’t do normally. Consider it a compliment for a great team effort for an awesome cause. Try to video or get pics of July 19.
I’ll hope to get pics, but I won’t have a video camera. I appreciate your links and apologize for being slow to get everything done. You are linked now.~skt
I need to go to sleep!
ops: Sorry for the mistakes. Do over!

I’m not sure if that’s any better!
??:
Thanks, again. I’ve got you linked, and I appreciate your help with the project.~skt
I’m gettin’ upset now. The animated smiles are leaving excess letters and symbols. I’m such a perfectionist even at 1 am. Goodnight!
I’m sorry, I don’t know how to change it.~skt
