I Gave My Love A Cherry

My Daddy loved cherries. It didn’t matter what kind. He liked them fresh, and loved them covered in chocolate.macromaraschino.jpg He’d eat them in a pie or in ice cream. Best of all, he loved Maraschino cherries. He would eat a whole jar full at a time. However, it wasn’t always that way. When he was young, he couldn’t stand them. He didn’t acquire a taste for cherries until he was in the Navy in WWII.

When my Momma got sick, before the cancer went to her brain, she started telling me family stories. This is what she told me about Daddy and his love for cherries.

cumberland_sound.jpgMy Daddy was stationed on the USS Cumberland Sound in the 1940s. It was one of the ships present in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. Those Navy boys were always anxious for letters and packages from home. My father wrote in his letters complaining to my mother that there was no alcohol aboard ship, and he really would have liked a drink.

That got Momma thinking and wishing she could find a way to send him some whiskey. Whiskey, however, was illegal to send through the mail. When she voiced the idea to one of her co-workers, he said, “Get a jar of Maraschino cherries, pour out the juice and fill the jar with whiskey. No one will ever know.”

Momma decided to give that a try, but she knew full well that Daddy didn’t like cherries. She packaged up the whiskey soaked cherries. Then, she wrote a separate letter to explain what was in that jar of cherries. She was grinning like a possum in a plum tree when she took those to the post office.

Weeks later, Daddy got Momma’s jar of cherr… package and letter at mail call. He opened the package first, of course, and saw the cherries. “Yuk,” he thought. He tossed them to one of his buddies, who immediately opened the jar and started eating, while Daddy sat down to open his letter. He heard his friends behind him snickering as he read the letter. Momma had written several paragraphs of the usual “I miss you” and “I love you” before she got down to her explanation of that jar of Maraschino cherries.

When Daddy read that the jar was filled with whiskey, he turned around and leaped across the room to get what was left of the jar. His friend had already drunk all the “juice,” but there was still half a jar of whiskey soaked cherries and he ate them all right then.

chocolate_cherries.jpgAfter that, my Daddy had a fondness for that little red fruit. It was always easy to decide what to get him for Father’s Day. He wouldn’t wear a tie, and he didn’t want handkerchiefs; but if we gave him a jar of cherries he was tickled pink.

I remembered that story as I was looking for an ice cream recipe for tomorrow night. This is one I found, and I thought I might give it a try:

CHERRY ICE CREAM

8 eggs
2 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 (13 ounce) cans evaporated milk, chilled
2 (21 ounce) cans cherry pie filling
3/14 cups milk

Beat eggs senseless for 3 minutes on high speed of electric mixer in a large mixing bowl; gradually add sugar and salt, beating well. Add evaporated milk and pie filling, mixing until combined. Stir in milk.
Pour mixture into freezer can of a 1 1/2 gallon ice cream freezer. Freeze according to manufacturer’s instructions. Let “ripen” at least 1 1/2 hours. Yield: 1 1/2 gallons.
Note: To prepare in a 1 gallon freezer, divide mixture and freeze each half separately. Refrigerate mixture until frozen (duh).

Good thing I’m not on a diet! I’ll let you know how that all works.

I bought an ice cream freezer last week at Lowe’s so that I could make some banana pudding ice cream for my family reunion. We couldn’t find them at first, and I asked one of the young fellas running around the store where the ice cream freezers might be.

He said, “A freezer? Does it have to say ice cream on it?” He was glancing over at the appliances.

“No, not a big freezer” I patiently explained. “It’s one of those little containers that you use to make ice cream.”

“OHHH,” he said. “You mean an ice cream maker.”

I told him, “Honey, I’m from Texas, and we call ‘em freezers. Just show me where they are.”

I’m just telling you that, in case you didn’t understand the recipe. Anybody have a favorite recipe with cherries in it? Anybody know how to make that recipe low fat?

I love making no bake cherry cheesecake. Maybe you’ve heard of it – it is done by whipping cream cheese and sugar and then whipping in dream whip or cool whip. You put this mixture on top of a graham cracker crust and chill. Serve with cherries on top. You can make this low fat if you use low fat cream cheese and cool whip. It’s an easy summer dessert.

I’ve never heard of that, but it sounds luscious! Do you have a recipe??~skt

Think about the power your mother, a woman, had back then to get your dad to eat fruit he didn’t like for the rest of his life. :cool:

I have a favorite cherry recipe: Drive to Washington State, stop at roadside stand by the river. Get out of car, fork over money, gently take bag of fresh cherries, right off the farm. Hold one luscious firm cherry at a time by stem, stuff it in your mouth before someone else grabs it, spit out pit, or if you are clever pull pit out with stem still attached. Man, I wish I could post the photo I have, but someone won’t let me!

:lol: My Momma didn’t have the power, Marcia…but that whiskey did! My husband doesn’t like sweet potato (no he CAN’T STAND sweet potato). Wonder if I drizzled it in whiskey….

I may have to try your recipe. That would be an expensive one, though.:lol:~skt

Fresh cherries in our house never last long enough to make it into a recipe! It’s the tail end of cherry season here and I am definitely not ready to part with them yet. The yellow ones were particularly delicious this year.

Oh, and I am LOVING that instruction to “beat the eggs senseless”. Too funny!

Sorry about those senseless eggs. I can never resist putting that into a recipe. That’s what my Mamaw always said to do. I don’t think I’ve ever had a yellow cherry. Is it the same taste?~skt

Love the story and the way it was conveyed. I must confess that I love Maraschino cherries and fresh ones…who doesn’t? Fortunately there is a cherry tree about 20 feet away so I just hope the birds don’t get them first :grin: but it is nice to just go and pick them fresh off the tree.

I can’t say I was a huge fan of cherries, but they sure sound delicious the way you describe them!! Your momma sounds like one clever woman :) I like that in a person.

We have one of those ice cream makers, too. Unfortunately, I bought one where you have to freeze the container first and I just can’t even seem to fit it in the freezer. We’ve used it a couple of times, though!

The hubby made this tangerine sherbet once that was delicious!!!

Now, tangerine sherbet sounds good, too. I got a smaller freezer, and it’s a bit of a pain because you have to make two batches. But, it fits in the freezer :lol: ~skt

I don’t understand the milk amount, but that’s the only thing I can see that you could make skim.

I have one of those ice cream makers (freezers) and haven’t used it in years, maybe I will play with it this week while on vacation.

The cherry story was cute and what a resourceful woman your mom was!

Yep, Momma used all her resources. I’ve almost got this cherry ice cream made…then I saw a recipe for Butterfinger ice cream. Aw, mannn~skt

Ahhhh..maraschino cherries!

They remind me of my favourite comedy film of all time – Some Like it Hot and in particular when the ‘girls’ are on the train and Sugar (Ms Monroe) is having a party and asks a sleepy Tony Curtis for Maraschino cherries!

Jack Lemmon spends the whole time chanting under his breath ‘I’m a girl, oh I’m a girl…’to avoid the pneumatic bosom of ‘Sugar’!

Hilarious! Sorry if you’ve never seen the film as you will not have a single clue what I am talking about. Lol!

Here it is! I posted the recipe on my blog. It’s a family favorite and its so easy to make, plus it doesn’t heat up the house in the summer time. Now I’m craving it – I may just have to run out and get the fixings to make it.

It sounds delicious and I can’t wait to give it a try. OHHH! I’m gonna be too big for my britches :lol: ~skt

Wonderful story. Makes me think of my dad, who always let us have the cherries that garnished his Manhattans — after washing them off in a glass of water!

Dang, why did he have to wash them off first? Was a tiny bit of alcohol going to turn your life around :lol: ?~skt

Oh I so love that story about your daddy and cherries. What a great story. You do this so very well. :)
