Before I went to The Colony for the First Share A Square Day, I ran by the post office and got beautiful squares from Carol O. in Honolulu, Hawaii to add to the mix. I slapped them into afghan piles so fast that I didn’t get pictures. Trust me, they are wonderful.
Well, I didn’t take as many pictures as I would have liked, because I was crocheting. Also, several of the folks didn’t want their faces shown. But, I got pictures of their hands busily working at the The Colony Public Library. Our crowd was small, but hard working. Joan Sveinsson, the Library Director, and her staff were so supportive of this project, that it amazes me. In fact, we have already tentatively scheduled a date in September to do this again. I can’t thank them enough for supporting this project.
I’m all tied up in yarn this morning, but before I go back to it I thought I’d show you some pictures that I did take. That young lady you see is Katie P. She’s 12 years old, and her hands pieced together the very first afghan. Well done, Katie. I bet your Mom is proud of the hard work you do. Donna B. is holding the afghan she donated to the cause. Thank you, Donna. All my thanks to the Happy Hookers and their hard work. These ladies gather together solely to work for charitable causes such as ours. I appreciate their big hearts and their hard working hands.
The newspaper reporter did come out to visit, and I’ll link you to the article when it comes out. For now, I’m trying to get things out of my car and stacked in the spare bedroom. I told you I wasn’t going to do much writing for a few days! Dang. I’m still boring!
[EDITOR'S NOTE: The Share A Square project has ended, and the afghans were delivered on July 7th, 2008. Although we will not continue that project, an exciting NEW endeavor, called the Good Medicine Project is in progress for summer camp 2009. We hope you will join us.]

Can’t wait to read the other article, I read the first. Good job, Shelly. We will all help you keep the momentum going!
YOU are definitely doing a great job of keeping my momentum going! I can’t thank you enough, Marcia, for all the help you have given!~skt
Lately, it’s a tough decision, crocheting or blogging! Thank you Shelly for pulling us all together, it’s beautiful!
Crocheting is about all I get to do! I miss blogging:sad:~skt
Wow, they are really great! I am so impressed.
I am a tiny bit ashamed that I am not helping more so tomorrow I am going to try and find SOMEBODY I know that can make some squares for you. England needs to be represented!
Bless you for all your hard work.
You are a sweetheart, Nigel. I wish England would send squares…but you don’t have to go twist arms

YAHOOOOO!!! (they say that in Texas, don’t they?) or maybe it’s more like YEEEHAW! Whatever, y’all did a fine job!
Really, it is so cool to see them come together. I hope you had a great time with the Happy Hookers!!!

Boy Howdy is a good exclamation! My Momma would roll over in her grave if she knew I was hanging out with “hookers.”

You are sooooo far from boring honey. You are awesome to the extreme. It looks wonderful! I am so happy with how this is going and slightly proud that one of my squares is on this first one!
I’m just proud we found each other!~skt
So much love has gone into your project. The kids will be so happy when they receive them. All wrapped in love they will be.
You have a heart of gold. I wish you continued success with this project.
Thank you, Vickie. I think a LOT of people have hearts of gold. You should see this growing pile!

It’s a tough decision for me too, I’ve forgone a lot of computer play time to crochet – and guess what I’m still happy. Maybe happier as my brain isn’t turning into mush..well not too much.
Those pics are great…and look at that 12 year old, wow! So many squares and whole afghans donated – I’m impressed Shelly!
Thanks for the update.
I wish I were better at updating. It’s a tough decision: crochet or update

Amazing and gorgeous! You gals rock!
Thank you, ma’am:grin:~skt
That is awesome Shelly!! I hope that when I get moved, I can be a part of making some of those afghans!
You bet you can help put them together! I started to ask if you’d like to do so now, and then remembered that impending move. Soon as you get that done, let me know and we can meet up and finish an afghan while we chatter and eat. Thanks for all the help and the support you are giving the project.~skt
It’s really neat to see some of the squares coming together.
This is the first mention I’ve ever seen about The Colony. My family and I lived in The Colony in the late 1980s. We loved it there, though I imagine it’s much changed now.
When we moved there, all of our friends were scared we had joined a cult. The Colony sounded cult-like to them.
The Colony is sooo far from being a cult
You wouldn’t recognize it these days!~skt
I will definately get going making grannie squares, what a wonderful idea. I was in a house fire in Oct 2005 and was in a coma in UC Davis in Sacramento Ca. I didn’t remember but when I finally got out my husband showed me a beautiful qult that was made and donated by a group of quilters for the fire dept. I cherish it to this day and thank God they gave it to me. It takes me a little longer to crochet now with the burns I got on my left hand but im getting there slowly but surely.

Cecilia, you have a big heart! I’m so sorry to hear about your misfortunes! But, don’t you think that those traumas we suffer sometimes make as stronger mentally? I will be delighted to take any squares you can make, so don’t push yourself. Thank you for your interest in helping us out with this project! I look forward to seeing the squares.~skt
