Only The Good—The Old Diner

“Boy Howdy! That’s a run-down old diner!” you think to yourself. Don’t try to kid me; I know y’all are thinking that this is an eyesore. That’s how we are conditioned to look at the world. So often, we see the negative. That’s because finding the positive can be difficult sometimes. I challenge you to look harder at this picture and see Only The Good.

Frosty Drive In is located in an older part of Denton, Texas. I don’t know it’s history, but I wish I did. It looks like a 1950s vintage to me, what do you think? I’ve never been tempted to eat there, but I’m told the food is good. That must be the truth, because I occasionally see a police car or two pulled up there at lunch time so the officers can get their sustenance and have the energy to go drag illegal aliens out from under the street.

I can see a lot of good in this picture, but I want you to look at it and tell me what you see. Exercise your imagination, and see only the good. I promise that if you do that often enough, it will rub off on you in your daily life.

If you decide to post a photograph to find only the good, post your picture, then come back and tell me and I will link you here. You don’t have to be a blogger to comment. Just click that little link at the bottom of the post that says “comments” and talk to me.

As you go through your day, remember this quote:

“The real voyage of discovery consists not of seeking new landscapes but of having new eyes.”
~~~Marcel Proust~~~
Here’s hoping you can look at your own corner of the world and see only the good.
Your guess about the 1950s is probably close as the first thing that came to mind was how much it looked like an old fashioned “drive in”. The other thing it reminded me of was Chowchilla, CA … a little town in california that has stayed a little town in feeling if not housing. When I knew it, it had a “mainstreet” that was two blocks long. We are losing those towns and they should be cherished while they last.
Those old towns won’t be around long. Ours is changing at lightning speed, and I’m surprised to see this still in existence.~skt
This is the home of the chicken car!!!!!!!!!
It used to be parked over to the right (facing the diner), in the vicinity of the SUV.
I couldn’t find a soul who remembered the chicken car. Everyone I asked about it looked at me like I was some kind of dumb cluck!~skt
Shelly, I don’t see a run down place when I look at that picture at all! I see a place where LOTS of people spend summer evening sipping root beer floats, LOTS of kids probably had their first dates and then bring their kids back there to see where they had their first date. I see going into a place like that and probably knowing everyone in there. That place just looks like it is beaming with lots of good memories for people.
I love places like that. Here, something stays in business for like a year and then it’s gone. No place to go back to to reminisce and make new memories. When we were in Seneca, IL two weeks ago there was a similar looking place called Fuzzy’s Diner that I wrote about. I would love a place like that here!!!
Jessica
Yeah, root beer floats on a summer evening. However, with this right beside the highway, it probably wouldn’t be the best spot for a first date. I think it’s kind of a cool old place, myself~skt
Without a doubt, some of the best hamburgers and shakes and things I’ve ever had come from places like this.
I love the old fashioned mug, and the lettering style of the word Frosty looks 50′s to me. The style of lettering is very similar to Leo Fender’s “Fender” on early Telecasters and Stratocasters from the 50s.
If I saw this place, I’d be thinking of a root beer float, simply based on the sign.
Yep, that’s what it reminds me of, too. I’ll have to go look at my husband’s guitars and see if I can see that resemblance~skt
I look at that picture, and I remember being a kid, and my parents taking me to the drive-in restaurants, where they put that tray on the driver’s side door, and they brought your food out to you. LOVE IT!!
And then, the rootbeer — OMG, it was so good. I’m there.
Y’all are making me thirsty for root beer. But, you know that out of a can or a bottle it just doesn’t taste the same~skt
If the place is still there and it’s vintage 1950′s then the food has to be good. So, the good is the food. Next is that great beer on top of the place. That’s good. Lastly it from a different time. A slower pace. A more simple time and that’s really, really good. Have a great day my friend.
Yeah, I like the thought of a slower pace. You have a good day, too~skt :)
I absolutely love that photo. I want to be in that photo, I see only the bad in anyone who would see anything BUT good in that photo. Can you tell I love retro stuff?
Now, if you put a picture like one of guy in an ambulance with the door open and him about to roll out while the EMT lights a cigarette . . . and wrote about the good in THAT . . . well then I’d probably participate ;) Again, amazing picture . . . may I lift it for my gallery? Did you take it?
Yes, I took it…you can lift it or I will go get a better one. You have a warped mind, sweet friend. You really want me to take disaster pictures??~skt
I see a respect for the past, the ability to either dream of good weather to eat outdoors or a symbol of the resilience of people to eat outside and ignore the weather.
Oh, yeah. I can see that. Here in Texas, in the summer, good weather is a dream. Unless you like 102 degrees at 8:00 p.m. :lol: ~skt
Although your point is well-made and taken… :)
I did not think rundown!
I LOVE vintage little diners. Love diners. What’s not to see good there? Oooh I have greasy burger taste and chocolate pie craving now.
I’m not seeing chocolate pie at this place, but I don’t know for sure. Maybe an ice cream cone dipped in chocolate. That’s good, too~skt
To me I see the nice new, modern car parked out front – it’s such a contrast to the run down building.
To me it’s a link to the past in the modern world – the owners don’t feel that they need to bring it up to date as its charm is in everything that some might see as flaws. It’s a way to step back in time to a simpler time. If they modernized it, it would just be another restaurant and it would lose its whole appeal.
You are right, Tea, it wouldn’t be as charming if it looked like every other drive in (sonic, dairy queen) in town. I just love the old sign more than anything~skt
This is my restaurant!! :mrgreen: My family started it in 1954 and it was a drive in ONLY. The building you are looking at was constructed in 1964 because they wanted to have a dining room and be able to stay open in the cold months as well. The chicken car was actually parked on the corner of the parking lot and brought in all kinds of curious people. I wish we still had it!
If you have any questions please feel free to let me know!!
I never got to see the “chicken car.” I wish I had! I’ll have to stop in and eat there (my cholesterol levels don’t let me “do” burgers often). Thanks for dropping by! I really do love to see your restaurant when I go by.:grin:
