Only The Good—Here’s Looking At You

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on August 7, 2007

He’s all bug-eyed, isn’t he? I was out and about here in Denton, Texas putting up posters for the upcoming Share A Square Day. At the Visual Arts Center, as I walked through the shade of the trees, I glanced down at the sidewalk to see this fella looking up at me. I don’t know what kind of beetle he might be, do any of you entomologists out there have a name for him? No? Well, we can give him a name right here. I’ll let y’all work on that. You will notice that those are not his eyes, though at first glance, I thought they were.

I thought he was beautiful, and just had to have a photograph. I want you to look at this photograph and see Only The Good. Don’t just say, “Ick! A bug!” Think about him for a minute. He’s not a harmful bug. I looked up “beetles” at Wickipedia and this is part of what they had to say:

Beetles make up the most species of insects. The order Coleoptera, means “sheathed wing”, and contains more described species in it than in any other order in the animal kingdom. Forty percent of all described insect species are beetles (about 350,000 species), and new species are frequently discovered. Estimates put the total number of species, described and undescribed, at between 5 and 8 million.

Now look at him for a moment, and think of something nice to say about him. It’s a simple exercise in seeing the positive. We don’t do that often enough. If you will take a moment and just think about the positive in any situation, you can find it, but we have to train ourselves to do that. So contemplate this bug-eyed beetle. Tell me what you think. Remember, only the good. And, while you are at it, give him a name! Then, you can go out into your own world and try to see only the good!

I like the grooves running down his back, and I think his name is Steve. ;o)

 I don’t know, mm. “Steve” is such a “pedestrian” name for such a groovy beetle. Even though he IS walking, he needs something with more pizzazz don’t you think?~skt

This is kinda pushing it for me because I’m really not a fan of the creepy crawlies….but, for a beetle, he is kinda cute! Is that nice enough? LOL

We can’t name him Steve because that’s the hubby’s (aka JW) name. I did notice the streaks on his back so I think “Streak” is a good name for him. He’s kind of smudgy looking and I’ll bet he can run like the dickens!!

Jessica

I know you don’t like creepy crawlies, and I’m proud of you for not just clicking away! I think you were as nice as you could be under the circumstances  . Streak, could work, maybe. He didn’t run for me. I noticed him, because he turned his upper body, almost like he was turning his head, to look at me. I’m sorry I succumbed to my weirdness and forced his image on you. Actually, I’m not, but I thought it was the thing to say  ~skt

What a fantastic idea.

I actually think he is quite cute with those HUGE faux eyes looking up at you – just like a bambi bug!

An aside – I learned today from the radio that ants can regenerate the top metre of soil in a 10 year period – now there is a plus!!

Maybe he is “Bambi?” That is a plus for ants…but we have FIRE ANTS! Trust me, I will never post a picture of one of them…I wouldn’t be able to find the good  ~skt

Well, we know I couldn’t find the good in fire ants — well, yes, I can — they drove us out of FL to WA – but those hospital visits in between just plain sucked. Now, as to Google Boogle Beatle – he makes a bit of a art statement on that cool sidewalk. (no, I didn’t misspell Beetle — he has a first middle and last name.

You always have to get elaborate don’t you! He’s too short to have a first, middle and last name  I guess fire ants did have a little bit of “good” in them, but sounds like the hospital visits weren’t worth it!~skt

It just their skin..bugs dont have big eyes like that…nice post though

Oh, I knew it wasn’t his eyes, but that’s what it seemed at first glance! Thanks for the visit and the kind words!~skt

Wonder what our bugs (just posted a bug photo) would look like if they had baby bugs?

They would be bug ugly! But, so ugly they are cute! The eyes on mine combined with the behind on the one you posted would make a great horror movie  ~skt

Expressive eyes. Beautiful black and white coloring. Lots of long legs. That’s the best I can do. Have a grand day. :)

It’s a “bug,” Sandee. You did the best that anybody could do! Thanks for trying  ~skt

He’s actually cute, something that can’t be said for most bugs!

We’re pretty conditioned to think of bugs as “icky” aren’t we? And some of them ARE. This one was pretty wonderful, though~skt

Well, he certainly IS bug-eyed! :) If he’s a Beetle, it must be Ringo. Hehehe. It suits, with the beautiful rings that look like eyes. The black beetle on the grey-black asphalt or concrete makes a stunning, monotone photo. When I look at him, the word that comes to mind is DETERMINATION. It looks like he’s just taken a short rest on a longer journey. :)

Ringo would be a good name for him. He was definitely “determined.” He was a bug on a mission. Aren’t we all on a longer journey? Let’s hope so  ~skt
