by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on September 5, 2007

Y’all have been waiting very patiently, and I thank you for that. I’ve been as busy as a one-armed woman saddling a horse, and a lot is getting done. On Tuesdays, I crochet with the Senior Center Needlework Group here in Denton, and on Wednesdays I drive to Roanoke to crochet with another needlework group. You would not believe how much help I am getting from those fine ladies! Not only are they putting together afghans, they are making squares, and rimming others that have been sent to me. They take them home and bring them back the next week. It’s so wonderful to walk in and be handed squares that can pop right into an afghan.

On Labor Day weekend, I was supposed to meet with Connie K., as she swung through this area on a trip. She has finished two afghans, and by crocheting all through the night, she got us to the goal of FOURTEEN AFGHANS made for the month of August! However, I’m a doofus and tried calling her at her home number instead of her cell phone. She didn’t answer. Can you say “Duh?” We are going to try to hook up in Greenville, TX (which is halfway between us) later this month. She’s a glutton for punishment and wants more afghans to put together. Connie, I love you.

I have a ton of pictures to upload, but I’m going to make you wait. I’m exhausted. Mamaw would say, “I’m a might wilted.” Papaw would say, “I burned all my wood.” Daddy would tell you, “I feel like I’ve been rode hard and put up wet.” Somehow, that phrase has lost something in translation…

Just so you know, we now have 15 afghans (I made another over the weekend) and I’m halfway through another. I’ll post a picture in my Thursday Thirteen tomorrow.

For right now, I’m gonna go saw some logs. Goodnight, Irene.

Yes, I’m still getting lovely squares in the mail! Some from local people, too.

The women at the Denton Senior Center presented me with this huge batch this week. Thank you Mary, Jo, Pauline, Arlene, Vernell, Mary K, Mary C, Nan, and anyone I missed! I appreciate your hard work.

My local vintage store, Alter Ego, accepts squares and gives them to me. A woman named Rebecca T. evidently read about the project in the paper. This is her second huge batch to bring down, but I don’t have her address to thank her. Rebecca, if you read this, please know that you are appreciated!

Stephanie S. in West Virginia has sent along another batch of squares (she’s been really hard at work keeping me supplied). Look at the hearts she worked into them! Now Stephanie has agreed to crochet black rims around the squares for me. I hope to get that box in the mail today.

These delicate squares were sent from Jillian N. in Norfolk Island in the South Pacific! She ran across my blog and decided to send some squares. Those are lovely, Jillian! I appreciate them.

On Friday, Tracey J. was coming to town for a class at TWU (she had to create a blog for it and I am giving her the first link!), and wanted to show me the afghan she is working. It’s that close to being finished, she just has a little bit of the edging to do. She chose to use a softer black yarn than Red Heart to rim it, and it feels luscious! Tracey also took the squares to put together a second afghan!

When I met her at Jupiter House (one of my coffeehouse hangouts on the square here in Denton), I noticed another familiar face. Isabelle, who puts rims around squares for me in all of her “spare time,” was studying for a class at a table out front. She was delighted to get to meet another participant in the Share A Square program, and was ready to stop studying and crochet. Here are two of the “angels” for this program, and I appreciate them both!

Saturday, I drove to Greenville, Texas to meet up with another “angel,” Connie K. She lives in Gladewater, Texas, so we decided to meet halfway between so that she could bring me two afghans she put together. We met at Puddin Hill ( a restaurant and chocolate factory) for lunch.dsc02084.JPG

Connie came with her daughter, daughter-in-law, and her adorable grand baby (not that her daughter and daughter-in-law weren’t also adorable).

We had a delightful lunch, and then toured the store. Connie made me spend money (it’s all her fault). We saw the chocolate carousel, and the chocolate Victorian House. I can’t remember how old these creations were…20 years or so. The chocolate is stale, so there is no danger that anyone would eat them, but I sure hope the air conditioner doesn’t have a blowout!

She was ready to take the squares for 10 afghans to save money on postage, but settled for two and a lot of squares to rim. I’ll get her some more as time goes on, but I don’t want to overwhelm her and I don’t want to run out if other people are willing to help make the afghans. Here are the two she has finished.

More squares in the mail! Thank you ladies! WE ALMOST HAVE HALF OF THE SQUARES WE NEED!
These are from “Yarnmonkie” in NC. You might be interested in dropping by her blog (if you are addicted to buying yarn) to know about the “scientific study” that will tell you why you are addicted.

Fuzzy! A pile of beautiful squares from Sara in ID, whose blog is The Estrogen Files.

More wonderful squares from Alaska! Thank you, Barbara. Not only have you been supporting the project with your crochet, but you’ve been “advertising” for us. Now you’ve even tucked some cash for postage. I appreciate you!

Good heavens — can you be any busier? Remember to take some time for yourself and be good to you!!
Sounds like you have so much on your plate right now!

I bit off more than I can chew, Lara!~skt

Hi, Shelly. You should be getting a big box from me soon. And, I have begun working on some more. I finished five squares last night (a movie night) and have another done this morning before church. I’ll probably ship the group off on Friday.

THANK YOU for doing this!!!

More Alaska squares! Yay! You’d think Alaska was another country, cuz my volunteers get so excited about it. Thank you so much for the squares, and for all you are doing to promote the project!~skt

you are very welcome! And – check your post box – I just checked the tracking thingy and it says that the box was delivered Friday.

I’ve got 11 finished now and will work on them until I can get to the post office later this week – it may be Friday – or it could be sooner. hahaha.

And – yes, Alaska IS a foreign country – at least it is to shippers. Alaska is not part of the “continental” US, or so we’re told. I’m not sure what continent the rest of y’all are on, but we’re on the North American one. hahaha (gotta laugh sometimes)

Have a great week!

Whoot! I received them…They are beautiful! I think that sometimes my postal workers don’t have all the mail up when I go to get my coffee in the morning  If I don’t get it early, I go postal. Thank you for sending them Barbara, and for tucking in some postage money! I’m spending that later today. I’ll post pictures in a little while. I appreciate you!~skt

Yaaaaahhhhh!!! I finally got a few squares off to you today (only 6). I’m afraid all my political blogging caught up with me and I came down with a spiritual malaise that has taken me a month of offline time to begin the healing of. Yesterday I checked my email and found an excited comment from a reader on my share a square entry and realized that my hiatus from the internet had pulled me away from this wonderful, spiritually recharging project. Rather than wait to have the “Witch’s Dozen” that I was hoping to send, I decided to get the first 6 in the mail and make some more. Talk about healing!
I just looked at the FAQ and realized that I goofed a bit. I attatched my business card with my blog addie to the center of each square with a tiny pink safety pin. The next bunch will come with ribbons or yarn, instead. Much love to you, Shelly and all you awesome share-a-squarers!!!

Jen September 16, 2007 at 9:48 pm

I do like your added color and I love looking at all the different colors.

Rose will be sending out our next batch any day and my Mom will be back at the end of this week and she’s been crocheting up a storm.

Looks great and I will blog about this again this week, though I think we share most of the same readers.

Hey Jen. I like adding the color to the border, too. It just seems to add a little zip to it. I look forward to your next batch of squares! I can’t tell you how much they are appreciated. I thank you for blogging about the project, too. I think we may share the same “commentors,” but I bet you have some different readers. The more we mention it, the more likely someone is to find out about it and be moved to action. &hearts ~skt

Tina September 18, 2007 at 7:40 pm

I mailed 50 rimmed squares to you today along with 4 big super saver skeins of black yarn and a baggie full of tags. I also am sending you some cash to help with anything else you might need for the squares. I am so blessed to be a small part of this project for the kids. You are an angel in disguise. Keep going and get some rest when you can.

You are a sweetheart, Tina! I appreciate you more than I know how to tell you! You are a LARGE part of this project. Every single one of you are. It wouldn’t be happening without YOU!~skt

Hey Shelly… leave it to me to throw off your math. I’ve got a “Witch’s Dozen” (13) in today’s mail. BTW, I’d be happy to put an afgan or two together for you, if you want to send me a couple of kits when you have them.

My math stinks anyway, Thorne  I will get a kit together for you and mail it this week! Thanks tons!~skt
