In the blog world, we pass around “memes.” If you aren’t a blogger, you are thinking, “Say whut?” It rhymes with “themes,” or “dreams,” or “schemes.” Basically, it’s just a questionnaire, sometimes used to tell you more about, well me-me-me! That’s assuming that you want to know about me, and that I haven’t already told you more than anyone needs to know! A meme is also a scheme to pass around links, because we bloggers love those. I’ve been handed two of them, and have delayed on posting them, so today is meme time.
My friend Damien, at Riley Central started a meme he is calling The Thursday Three (I think because he started it on a Thursday). I’m posting it for Tuesday, because I break rules. Hey, Tuesday starts with a “T,” and so does Thursday, so it works for me.
He asked us to “pick three things that enrapture, consume, fascinate, or otherwise enliven you more than blogging. Then write a few lines about each to explain what the nonblog activity does for you, why and how.” According to Damien, when we get writer’s block it is because we spend too much time on the computer instead of doing things worth writing about.
Ummm…Damien, I rarely get to sit at the computer anymore! When I do, I have to get straight to the blogging and get done. I have to get back to the crochet (because I’m obsessed). But, I’ll try to tell you things I used to do before I got all tangled up in yarn.
His rules:
- 1. After your intro, copy/paste this line and the rules below it: The originator wants to see how far it goes so please keep his link intact: http://rileycentral.net
- 2. Encourage people to post with the incentive of a link by including those who have passed it along here: (Your link here and so on . . .)
- 3. Visit at least 3 on the list who’ve written and passed this meme. Leave them a comment.
Okie Dokey.
- My favorite thing is time with my husband. We are trying to learn to dance, and we both have two left feet. That’s pretty much four foot of clumsiness for you. It’s sad to watch, I’m sure, but we are having fun. We also like to sit around the house and play Footsie (which is a card game…but come to think of it, I like “playing footsie” and…other stuff…, too). Unfortunately, when we first started playing the card game with friends, he didn’t “get” the strategy, and kept losing. So, at home I taught him the game by playing open handed. I’m a “cutthroat” card player, and I taught him all my tricks. Once he understood, he turned out to be a pretty sharp player; he smears me every time we play (next time I teach him a card game, I’m going to teach him wrong!). My Spousal Unit is funny, and witty, and makes me giggle. He’s also a large part of the silly jokes I make on the blog that y’all seem to like. Yep, time with my husband is first choice.
- When we leave the house, I like to go on “Scavenger hunts.” We visit vintage stores, garage sales, even people’s trash (EEK! don’t tell anyone that!). It’s all about finding something offbeat and fun. My kids used to say that my house “looked like a Chili’s Restaurant,” but Chili’s doesn’t decorate like me anymore.
- I’m a spinster. Yes, a married spinster! It only means “a woman who spins.” I’ll tell you how the word acquired a different meaning on another day. I have several spinning wheels, and I love to sit at my antique wheel and feel the draw of mohair or silk through my fingers. I love the whir of the wheel (Mahatma Ghandi said that spinning is a form of meditation, and he was right). I close my eyes and imagine the women who sat at my wheel a couple of centuries ago creating the threads for their clothing. I can’t think of anything that is much more relaxing, but then I don’t have to do it. If I want clothes to wear, I can go over to the Wal Mart.
After next July, when the Share A Square afghans get delivered, I’ll have more time for those things again. I’ll have time for other things I love like gardening, weaving, and cooking, too. My husband will be glad when I cook again.
I’m not tagging a ton of people. I’ll tag three, and see what they have to say(if they haven’t already done it). If you want to be a part of it, tell me and I’ll happily add your link.
I don’t want to hear any more about it!!
I had to tell you my middle name because Jamie, at Durward Discussion passed along another “meme” to me. It’s the Middle Name Meme. Hers was fun to read, because she has a loooong middle name. Actually, two middle names, and she claimed she was “attacked by the Scots while too young to defend myself.” I’ll take up the challenge, though it won’t be as good as hers.
THE RULES
1. You have to post these rules before you give the facts.
2. Players, you must list one fact that is somehow relevant to your life for each letter of their middle name. If you don’t have a middle name, use the middle name you would have liked to have had.
3. When you are tagged you need to write your own blog-post containing your own middle name game facts.
4. At the end of your blog-post, you need to choose one person for each letter of your middle name to tag. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.
5. Don’t forget to link back to the person that tagged you in the beginning.
Y Yackety-yackety, blah, blah, blah, Yada, Yada, Yada.
I never shut up.
V Lemme see, I already told you that I like vintage, and you know I’m vocal. I have a voracious appetite for bacon. Volunteer—-that would be an obvious one, wouldn’t it?
O O, my. This one is not so obvious. I’m told I can be obstinate. I oscillate (because I’m a Pisces, and we are said to be wishy washy).
N I’m nice. I know I am, because Jen, and Arkie Mama, and Mo, and Taylor Blue, and Sophiagurl said so. I’m also creative and thoughtful, because Sherry and Jessica the Rock Chick said. Sandee says I make her smile, and Marcia says I’m blogging for global change! Dang! I have them snowed. But, if they said it, I’m bona fide!
N Of course, they only know what I tell you on the blog! They haven’t seen me in the morning before I get my coffee or when I’m having a hot flash! I’m naughty, too.
E Well, duh! Eclectic!
Six of you I have to tag now. You can do it or skip it (I’ve not been out and about, so I don’t know if this has already hit everyone). I’m sorry I didn’t ask you if you wanted this before I tagged you.
Be sure you go and vote for your favorite in the Dear Abby Contest. It’s your civic duty.

Hey Shelly! You poked your head into the blogosphere
Those are really cool things you like that I didn’t know entirely! Thanks for playing tag!
Damien
Thanks for tagging me. I really liked the meme, though I complain about getting them
I did poke my head into the blogosphere, and miss doing so more often. Sorry I never comment, but I do read!~skt
Now I’m wondering what kind of blogger I am!!! I had no idea “memes” rhymed with “dreams”! I thought it was Mimi, like the name!
Not that it matters, I guess, but still..it’s probably a good thing I didn’t go to that blogging convention. I would have been discussing memes and totally mispronouncing the word!
I enjoyed your post…you’ll have to share the directions to “footsie” so we can all play
Jessica The Rock Chick
Hey Jessica, Don’t obsess over pronunciation. I wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t looked it up. I linked to my footsie post, but you really need to have someone teach the game to you. Hey, I could teach you! But, I won’t be teaching you MY strategy. I learned my lesson on that

Well, that was fun and the most interesting part…You break rules. I knew that. Have a great day Shelly.
Yeah, you knew that. I think I made it clear from the start that rules are made to be broken. What fun would it be to follow them?

Non-blogging activities … hmmm… am pondering this one!
Your sister’s take on your name? Too funny!
Yes, my sister’s take on my name was funny, but DON’T even try to use it! You can think of non-blogging activities—-can’t you?~skt
You betcha sweetie….I love a challenge. I am on it!
I know you DO love a challenge! Anyone who will take the squares to make one of these afghans can expect a challenge. You don’t know how much I appreciate you for that…♥~skt
Ohhh…sounds fun; I’ll give it a whirl later today..(just wish I had less vowels to work with!!)
~Mo (Maurean Eileen)
EEEK!
Well Ms. Shelly for you I will do this meme. I am technically on a blog sabbatical trying to catch up on somethings in my real space (vs cyberspace) So I will send you a little note when I have posted this meme. Sounds like fun.
Oh, Lady! I know what you mean about trying to catch up! Notice that I’m late in replying, and I’m writing at 3 am! I look forward to seeing what you post
~skt
Sitting and spinning your wheels, I can visualize that! You’re an old soul Shelly and perhaps that’s why storytelling is your gig. My TOP 3 nonblogging meme is posted.
Yes, Rosemarie, I probably should have been born in another time, but I never would have survived without air conditioning
