I’m secretly addicted to Dancing With The Stars. Don’t tell anyone, because I’m one of those “television snobs.” I think that television is a medium rarely well done. I don’t want to watch the stars during their silly rehearsals, but I love watching them dance the finished product. Especially when they do the jive dancing. You see, I always wanted to be

I got to portray “Dancer” in a school Christmas play many years ago, but it was a non-speaking part, and being a reindeer wasn’t quite what I had in mind.
I wanted to dance like my Momma and Daddy. I’ve shown you this picture before, but it’s probably my favorite picture. To me, it’s an expression of pure joy. When Daddy came home from work each day, he took my Momma in his arms and swung her around the kitchen. Watching the synchronization of a couple who have been dance partners for years is mesmerizing. Without words, their bodies know what to do. My friend, Wayne, told me that Momma and Daddy are doing a step called “Sugarfoot” in this picture. How romantic is that?
I wanted to dance like them, but all three Fates conspired against me—more than one time.
When my friend Carol took dance lessons, I asked Momma if I could take dance lessons, too. I wanted to be like Carol, because she was beautiful and poised and self-assured. Momma’s response was, “You are so clumsy the money would be wasted.” The truth was that we didn’t have the money for me to take dance lessons, but Momma thought she was “teasing” me. I would have preferred that she tell me we couldn’t afford it. Momma didn’t intend to be mean, but her words cut me like a knife. Parent’s have to be careful of the words that they say to their children, because we never know which words they will take to heart.
It’s true that I was a gawky and gangly adolescent. Because I didn’t have much self-confidence, I didn’t seem very graceful. I was far from clumsy, but because she spoke those words, I believed that I was a klutz. Because I believed it, it was true. By the next year, we had more money and Momma offered me dance lessons, but I had lost faith in myself, and I refused them. Instead she enrolled me in piano lessons. You want to talk about wasted money?
I dutifully walked down the street to my piano lessons each week, but the mystery of making music eluded me. Then, my little sister decided she wanted to take up piano. She picked up a book of chords (no piano lessons for her) and learned to play chords with both hands. She was playing Heart and Soul and Boogie Woogie music while I was still trying to play scales! I gave up on the piano, because of sibling rivalry. And, I still couldn’t dance.
In the sixth grade, I dreamed of dancing with a certain boy. I had my first crush on a boy named William. Well, in truth, he wasn’t my first crush. I had been enamored of many men before him. I dreamed of dancing with them, too.
I never missed a chance to see “Cheyenne” on the television. My hormones went wild looking at Clint Walker. Oh my.

There was also James Garner in Maverick. I thought he was so sexy.
And, my “secret” crush was Richard Boone as Paladin in Have Gun Will Travel. I know he was craggy looking, but I liked it.
I’m sorry. I got distracted for a minute there.
Does it seem hot in here to you?
Back to William, who was my first crush on a human being with whom I could make contact. And, contact we made at a sixth grade dance. He took me out on the floor for a slow dance. Eek! We touched each other in public! I was so unnerved by stepping into his arms to dance (when I didn’t know how to dance) that I made a total fool of myself. William stopped in his tracks and laughed at me. He laughed at me! And, he said, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear, “Well are you supposed to lead or am I?” I was mortified! My “crush” had crushed me.
It wasn’t long after that when William dropped me for another girl who had “blossomed” more than I had. I didn’t care. I didn’t want him anyway (he’s an old guy now).
Looking back, I don’t know why his words affected me, but they did. After that, wild horses couldn’t drag me out on a dance floor for a slow dance during my teenage years. I was embarrassed to try.
Then, I married Mr. X. I thought that maybe we could learn to dance together. But, he didn’t want to dance (at least he didn’t want to dance with me).
So, I danced in the privacy of my own home, with no other eyes upon me, for the next 26 years of my life. I had no doubt that I could learn. I have rhythm, but I just don’t know “steps.” And, the Fates weren’t giving me any opportunities to learn them.
When Eric and I married, I knew he didn’t dance. I didn’t think anyone in the world was more embarrassed about trying to dance in public than I am, but I found that person. I thought I was doomed to a life of no dancing.
But, a couple of months ago, we went to a dance with some friends (just to enjoy the company, you understand). While there, we each tried dancing with other people. As long as we had someone to guide us, we both made passable attempts at the Texas Two Step. I even got the hang of The Dallas Shuffle, as long as I had someone to lead me.
Then we stepped into each other’s arms to dance. That was a whole ‘nuther story. We are both too tentative to be able to make it happen. I would like nothing better than to be able to synchronize dance steps with the person closest to my heart (he’s the only star I want to dance with). I was afraid that the Fates were up to their old tricks.
Wait! Maybe we have put one over on the Fates! Last weekend there was a silent auction at a banquet. My Sweet Spousal Unit bid on dance lessons and won! Dancing is in my future at last. Now if the Fates would quit filling up my calendar so we can schedule the lessons, maybe I can dance with my own personal star.
[UPDATE: We finally got to dance! I think we learned a “life lesson” at the same time.

I watch it too. It’s the only thing I’ll “allow” myself to watch until Lost comes back on. I love it. I think it’s such a feel good show. I know some people hate the B Stars on it, but I respect anyone who’ll put themselves out there.
I only watch it in secret
And, I only watch when they really dance.~skt
I totally agree!! I LOVE watching the finished product of the Dancing with the Stars. In a zillion years, I couldn’t do that!!
You could if you had the money for a dance teacher and time!~skt
I am not a watcher of DWTS - but I love that your hubby did that - how sweet.
Yep, Jeanie. I thought he was a pretty cool guy to do that. It’s the kind of thing he does, though
~skt
My husband does a wonderful two-step and waltz — he’s far better than me. In fact, our first outings were to dance halls and country music bars. And seriously, it’s all I can do to keep up with him. I want to take lessons, but finding the time … sigh …
I envy that y’all can dance at all
We will be dancing, though. I know it!~skt
What an awesome post. I cannot wait til you learn to dance. Have fun and report back!
I will, Karen! Right now, I’m just trying to see when we can schedule it! Then, we have to find time to practice what we learned.
~skt
Another great story, Shelly! That is a perfect pic of your folks dancing. On the lawn! I LOVE it! I also love to dance. My girlyboi can really dance, too. We’re actually thinking of Square-dancing!! Can you believe it?! LOL
I didn’t think we would want to do country western dancing, but it’s Texas, after all
I’d rather learn to jive, but then you have to find a place that plays the music!~skt
Great post - I’ve got two left feet so I really admire people who can dance.
I thought I had two left feet when I was younger. I think it’s about “giving yourself permission.” We will see. I could be totally wrong, but I won’t rest until I try.~skt
Oh, I so enjoy reading your posts, Shelly! I also really love to dance. For the last couple of years, the kind of dancing I do the most is Scottish Country dancing at ceildhs. My hubbie is great at a ceildh, and is often much in demand by single women needing partners. I don’t mind too much, as I know there are certain dances he’ll only dance with me! My grandparents have a favourite dance, which is a real oldtime dance not taught at schools anymore, called the Pride of Erin. When it’s announced the floor clears and my grandma and grandad get up and dance this beautiful, graceful dance. They’ve been married for 53 years and when they move together, they move as one. Just lovely. I hope you have a wonderful time at your dance classes, Shelly. I’m sure you will!
Oh, I’m really jealous now
I love to go to the few ceildhs you can find in Texas and watch people dance. It speaks to my soul. How wonderful to get to watch your grandparents dance. It gives me chills to think of it.~skt
AWWWW! How exciting that he won the dance lessons. I don’t watch DWtS (we don’t have TV service at my house), but I do like to watch dancing movies. It’s so graceful.
I can’t wait to see a picture of you and Eric dancing like your mom and dad
It may be a while before that happens! It took them many years, I’m sure…and they were younger when they learned!~skt
I’ve always been a fan of ballroom dancing. Figure skating, too, for the same reason. It’s really gorgeous stuff.
I like figure skating, too. It’s another thing I hide to watch during the Olympics!~skt
I just think that’s the sweetest thing!
You got yerself a keeper, there, Shelly!!
Yeah, I know THAT’S right!
~skt
Hi Shelly! How exciting!! I love ballroom dancing and DWTS! I’ve been wanting to take lessons like that for years, but am unable to find a willing dance partner
How COOL it would be to have a picture of your and Eric like the one with your parents!
Oh, I so hope you enjoy the lessons and, of course, we all want a full report!
Jessica
It would be TOTALLY cool to have a picture of Eric and I dancing, but I think we would have to fake it!
~skt
What a great post! I hear you - I love to dance, but don’t know too much. I used to do choreography in musicals and show choir, but that’s a whole different animal. I can’t tear my eyes away from DWTS and I watch these people who didn’t know they could dance at all do all THAT and oh, how I wish they would let me compete. Could my mom vouch for my stardom?
Your Mom can vouch for your stardom. As long as YOU think you are a star, that’s all that matters!
~skt
I have caught the odd episode, but I am not hooked. I like watching their final dancing too(not rehearsal)…this show has got some pretty good popularity.
I would love to take dancing lessons with my DH. The only thing I can do is a little bit of the jive(which my mom taught me). The only thing is there really isn’t any place to go dancing here, unless you head to the bar and then it’s such a small space and all the young crazy kids cram in and they shake around and think they’re dancing.
It would be nice to have a more mature lounge place where you could go for a nice glass of wine or martini and listen to good music and dance.
Well, I’m jealous that you can jive, cause that’s my favorite. Yeah. I know there aren’t too many places to dance anymore. I can’t much see my Teamouse as a lounge lizard, though. Must be a hidden side to you!~skt
I don’t watch DWTS, but I do love to dance!! I have danced for as long as I remember, but my dear hubby, well, it takes alot to get him on the dance floor. He’ll slow dance with me, but the only way I can get him on the dance floor when the music is faster than a ballad, is after a few drinks!!
But it’s fun and makes for great memories!
Great post, and happy dancing!!
Thank you Ma’am! May see you on a dance floor in Fort Worth. Who knows?~skt
What a sweet memory (ies). I have never seen that picture of your parents and it is definitely a romantic shot. I always thought it would be fun to dance like that too, but I only took tap dancing. For my wedding, my husband and I took lessons and learned a Foxtrot routine to “Dancing Cheek to Cheek” by the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movie Top Hat and it was awesome.
You took more dancing lessons than I did! I’d have loved to see your Foxtrot routine. You could dance with the stars!~skt
Awww that crush story…how crushing!
But yes, dancing, it’s so great. And that photo of your parents is incredible!
Julie
Using My Words
It IS a pretty cool picture of them, isn’t it? Yeah, the crush was awful, but I’m over it. Sort of. I’ll be dancing soon in spite of everything!~skt
That is such an awesome memory of your parents, even more exciting is that it was captured in a photo to remember forever.
Yes , ma’am it is. It’s on a poster on my wall!~skt
Good for your husband! I hope there are many dances for the both of you together in the future.
I always loved Clint Walker, he was the kind of guy a guy could look up to. Lovely Wife and I just watched The Dirty Dozen a week or so ago. Clint was a big ol’ boy.
I hope we do to, JAM. Yeah, Clint Walker was a big guy. A “man’s man” AND a “woman’s man.” That’s rare!
~skt
What a gift that you have that delightful photograph of your folks dancing on the front lawn! You are right, they look absolutely joy-filled. Kudos to you and your sweetie for pursuing dance lessons. I won’t even say the stupid little diddy about break a leg… junemoon
You said it! And, we probably will…but we are going to give it a whirl
~skt
Excuse me, miss, but I believe the fates have stepped in so you can dance:
first, who would have thought Eric would get dance lessons (and flowers in the same 30 days).
second - the schools aren’t hiring storytellers… you said so yourself… so.. fate has stepped in to help you out!
We are waiting for the picture….
You may have to wait for a little while, darlin’. The schools HAVE hired for November, so it’s gonna be December before we get to give this a shot!~skt
That is just the best post! I love the picture of your parents…timeless.
What is it about dancing? My hubby and I can’t dance to save ourselves…yet, when we dance with each other, it really doesn’t matter
I wish it didn’t matter to US, but we are soooo self conscious. I hope these lessons help!
~skt
Well, I wish I could dance with someone like Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire!!! but my husband doesn´t like dancing, so it is imposible to think that he would become a new dancing star.
In Spain, there is the same dancing show, it´s name is ¡Mira quien baila!
Well, then you get to watch dance shows, too. And, I knew you liked the old dancers, just from what I can read of your blog! It would be nice to get that husband of yours to dance
~skt
I am also a fan of good dancing and I’d like to wish you all the best. I’ve been to ballroom and swing dance classes and it’s absolutely a blast.
Thanks, Daniel. We can’t wait to try it. But, we HAVE to wait until December because of schedules. Maybe we will be dancing for the New Year.~skt
Wonderful, heartwarming story, and very well-written. The photo of your parents is precious, and I want to especially thank you for posting the gorgeous photo of Clint Walker. Someone recently informed me that he has a website, and while searching for it your photo, which led me to your story. Like you, I thought he was the perfect man…..the first season DVD’s of “Cheyenne” are out…I’m going shopping
Many wishes for plenty of dancing in your future.
Thanks, Barb…yes Clint Walker was a hunk. Whew! I have to stop thinking about it or I’ll never get any work done
