A “Wicked Good” Eggnog Recipe

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on November 25, 2007

‘Tis the season, y’all.

eggnog ingredients

This gal’s gotta have her eggnog. Yes, I do love my eggnog, and I have found that I have something in common with George W.

Noooo, NOT “The Dubya!” the only things I have in common with him is Texas and the fact that we are both primates [but he is more of a monkey than I am].

I digressed. It’s hormonal. Sorry.

I’m talking about President George Washington! He, too, loved a strong eggnog. His was mixed with whiskey, rum, and sherry. Reportedly, that special blend of eggnog made grown men quiver and run away in fear lest they be embarrassed by not being able to handle their liquor. Naw, I made that last part up, but it was a strong drink, so they say (whoever “they” are).

Now me, I like mine with whiskey, rum, and brandy. The eggnog recipe calls for one quart of eggnog with 6 oz. of whiskey, 3 oz. of rum, and 3 oz. of brandy. My sister jokes that I mix up liquor and splash a little eggnog into it. Yes, it’s strong and it will knock you on your rear! It’s powerful stuff! That’s why you are supposed to drink it in dainty little glasses. It slows you down at least.

For maximum potency, let the eggnog steep in the refrigerator overnight. But, don’t tell your spouse it is in there, because if your spouse is like mine you will notice that the level drops in the pitcher overnight. Hmmm? Does it evaporate?

Trust me, this recipe is a winner. I mixed up some of this for the New Year’s Eve Celebration at a neighbor’s house last holiday season, and everyone enjoyed sipping it. They thought it was “wicked good.” If you are going to take it to a party, though, make sure it’s one within walking distance. All we had to do was follow the curb home.

If you don’t drink alcohol, you can have your eggnog without any liquor. It’s all good. I’ve been known to drink it that way if I have no choice. Especially, if it’s the Southern Comfort brand of eggnog (this is not a pay per post…I’m just sayin’). There is no liquor in it, but it is rich and creamy. Just sprinkle a little cinnamon and nutmeg on top, and it’s quite tasty.

I sure do enjoy having a sip or two (or three—heck, a gallon) of eggnog during the holidays. I don’t know why it’s just considered a holiday drink. You can’t get it in the stores at other times of the year. What a shame! I’m too darned lazy to make it from scratch. Some of the old recipes called for milking the cow directly into the liquor, according to my handy dandy Old Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender’s Guide. I’m not making that up! It’s really a book, see:

So, tell me. Do you drink eggnog? I’m betting you have a favorite recipe if you do. Tell me about it, or write a post and I’ll link to it. And, if you try this recipe, let me know what you think. Just remember to please drink responsibly, y’all! Use your noggin’ when you drink.

I love eggnog but don’t keep alcohol in the house, except bourbon to make bourbon dogs. lol

I promise, promise to get more squares to you this week!!!

I believe your promise. I’ve never had a bourbon dog—don’t give me any ideas. As long as it’s not a turkey hot dog I might like it. The bourbon would kill the taste of any of that nasty organ meat!

Yes I drink egg nog!! We’ve had a really great time. Thank you for this recipe — I’m open to new ones. I’ve always made Martha Stewart’s,which is REALLY good, because it has cream in it. But I’m open to trying something new. Thanks for posting this — it reminds me of good times.

Well, if you try it, let me know if you like it. I would love to see Martha Stewart’s recipe. Is it on-line?

I treat myself to an eggnog shake at McDonald’s and an eggnog latte at my local coffee shop each xmas season – that’s all the noggin I do!!!

To each his own, Ann. An eggnog shake at McDonald’s doesn’t blow my dress up, but if you like it, that’s all that’s necessary

I love eggnog, but never make it because I know I’ll get my fix at various holiday parties.

This year, however, I may just make my own. Thanks for sharing this!

If your husband keeps getting stuck at all the football games, a good eggnog is a fine alternative to pulling your hair out

I LOVE eggnog, but I’m the only one in my entire family who does, so I never make it. I rarely drink alcohol either, so I just buy the eggnog in the carton during the holidays for myself and hope that maybe some of the people we visit make some! LOL

I think I may have to take a detour to Texas this year! Yours does sound delicious!!

Jessica

Come on down! You’ll have to hurry, though, because the husband and I rassle over who is going to get to drink it

Yuck. I can’t even stand the smell of it, but Leon loves it, so I will share the recipe with him… and the tip on Southern Comfort Brand, thank you! But he will have to return the favor by buying me El Jimador tequila, I like it much better than Patron.

 I love tequila, but it doesn’t love me. I’ve told you that Jose Cuervo is NOT a friend of mine.

I love eggnog. It doesn’t love me so I drink it in the comfort of my own home…Alone. I am going to try your recipe for new years though.

I created a sangria type concoction I proudly refer to as “Sharon-Line Punch” anyone from my city knows the “Sharon-Line” is the side of town that is heavily wooded and a known place for ummm… “inappropriate” body burials. Needless to say this stuff is dangerous.

This concoction contains Moscato D’Asti, a bottle of flavored cognac, a bottle of pineapple or mango rum, and a bottle of appropriate flavored liqueur. You mix all that together with flavored marchiano cherries, black berries, raspberries and Canned pineapples. This is hella strong stuff and requires pajamas and no car keys. *Sigh* It’s obvious that 2007 came in I was just fast asleep when it happened.

Girl! Your concoction sounds deadly! I’m not man enough to drink that. I thought mine was strong.

I can really use a drink right now!!!! LOL!!!!

Just out of curiosity….Do you know where I can purchase good quality foods online? I am now trying to order from online stores only because of various reasons…….can you help me with any suggestions??????

There is only one place, out of all that I have tried that really stood out for true quailty, and that is Celebrityfoods.

If you can help me grow my list of quality services or stores, where I can buy my food, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Hey!! I *have* that guide – altho, mine says its the 61st edition…

It also says the word “eggnog” is derived from joining the sounds of “egg ‘n grog” ; I thought that was interesting, too.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

I’ve tried it at least once, but since I can’t remember the experience nor do I drink it as a Holiday beverage, my guess is I wasn’t impressed.

Yes I enjoy eggnog. No, I don’t drink very much of it – but yes, I have been known to make it from scratch throughout the year to satisfy cravings (but not for many many years). Thanks for the recipe, I might get to try it this year!! :P

Imbibing eggnog made with this recipe is like playing Russian roulette. You might dodge the bullet, but why take the risk. There are other ways to enjoy home-made eggnog. Check out this link: http://efoodalert.blogspot.com/2007/12/tis-season-to-drink-eggnog.html

By the way, there’s not enough alcohol in even the most potent eggnog recipe to kill Salmonella!

Well, Phyllis, the recipe uses store bought eggnog, so it’s pasteurized. I’m not following this link, because I’m not sure this isn’t spam!!

That is almost the exact recipe (at least the proportions of booze to nog) handed down from my great grandmother Otto (last name), really. She specified the type and brand of booze – and I think that really makes a difference. The selection in your pic looks like a good one. My ggm liked 12 oz. Myers rum, 6 oz. of Pikesville Rye, and 6 oz of Martell Brandy.

Over the years we’ve found a local dairy (Lewes) thay makes a seasonal egg nog (sans booze)that is indistiguishable from the home made batch. We’ve since found Sailor Jerry’s Rum to be the best for the nog instead of Meyers, and Maker’s Mark instead of the Rye, and Hennesey or Remy Martin for the brandy. You need a delicious Egg nog base and then good booze makes it a great nog, that’s all there is to it!

I have no clue if different brands make a difference, because I’m not really a “sophisticated” drinker. When we buy liquor, it usually gets the chance to age! But, give me a bottle of dark ale or stout, and it will disappear so fast you will think I’m David Copperfield! Maybe I’ll have to try your ggm’s brands! Then, those bottles of liquor around here might never get the chance to get dust on the bottle. Thanks for sharing!
