Everything I read about oatmeal suggests that it is a wonderful way to start the day.

- People who eat breakfast in the morning are more likely to be able to keep their weight lower.
- The anti-oxidants in oats are supposed to have anti-inflammatory properties.
- Some say that the fiber in oats is supposed to help with hemorrhoids, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (not that I have any of those things!).
- Eating oatmeal is supposed to lower your LDL cholesterol and help you have a healthier heart.
That all sounds good. But, I’ve been eating oatmeal every morning for weeks now (well, only two days, but it seems like weeks), and my cholesterol level hasn’t dropped one itty bitty bit. I’m gonna quit eating that stuff.
It’s nasty!
Yep. The only way I can stomach it is by drowning in butter, loading it with sugar, and topping it with bacon.

Maybe I should try another brand of oatmeal?

Don’t know about brand, but dump the butter and savor just the bacon and sugar combined with the oatmeal.. the butter is throwing it off.. Trust me.. grin…
Nahhh. You can’t be telling me to eat bacon! You are a vegetarian! How ’bout I throw out the oatmeal and savor the bacon, sugar and butter?
LOL..you crack me up! Bacon, butter and sugar on oatmeal
Personally, I like the banana flavored instant oatmeal. I don’t know if that has the same healthful properties as the cook it yourself stuff, but it sure tastes a lot better!!!!!
Maybe Cheerios might be more up your alley
Jessica
Yep, Cheerios or Fruity Pebbles.
You see those two words “Quick Cooking”. That is why (1) It isn’t doing any of the good stuff and (2) It tastes nasty. In order to be “quick cooking” the oats must be ground into itty bitty almost dust sized pieces, flattened, and rolled. This of course destroys the basic components of the grain including all the natural sugars that make it sweet enough for most people to eat without adding sugar.
You want “Stone Ground/Steel Cut” Oats. Mc Canns is the best http://www.mccanns.ie/ but expensive (Consider buying whole grain and grinding yourself). These are milled or cut down only to the second level (“rolled oats” are for cookies not breakfast) The night before, you put a pot on the stove, throw in a hand full of oats with a bit of salt, cover and go to bed. The next morning, you cook your oats just as you normally would with a small pat of butter. This will only take about five minutes once it comes to a boil. It should be thick but not stiff. Remove from heat, cover and allow to sit and thicken some more (It should look like a nice lumpy island in the bowl.) It is so nutty sweet you can almost eat it that way, but put a little milk (or cream if your diet can handle it).
Now That’s Oatmeal.
Oh, Jamie. You took me seriously in this post. Don’t you know I just made oatmeal so I could be goofy? I don’t care how you cook it, and I don’t care what you put on it, oatmeal is hard for me to choke down. I’m just not into eating pasty stuff. But, I did try eating white glue when I was a kid, and my parent’s couldn’t stop me. Come to think of it, oatmeal doesn’t taste much worse than glue.
P. S. Should have said McCann’s is the best if you get the right kind.
Love your picture. You have a very nice face.
ROFL!!! I tried oatmeal for a few days too. It was terrible without all the good stuff on it which by the way is why you are suppose to eat the plain oatmeal in the first place….LOL Try Cheerios they are suppose to be good for your heart too. Or just eat and apple a day. My brother swears by it.
I like Cheerios! I could try that. They might be good with bacon, too
Dang these dietician people anyway – take away all the good stuff in life I think is what they live for.
I love -so do all three of my kids -oatmeal with butter and brown sugar -sometimes toss in raisins and/or dates and nuts too. But bacon? Now that is a new on one me but I should have realized it would be a normal thing for you -the lady that I think would or could eat bacon on everything, virtually three meals a day. Well -that could also be me too in that I love bacon too but just never thought of trying it on oatmeal. Might have to give that a whirl.
Stick with me, kid, and I’ll show you all kinds of foods that bacon can garnish (or disguise). Have you ever had a bacon and peanut butter sandwich?
Would you like my recipe for crockpot oatmeal? You prep it the night before and let it cook all night. You get up in the morning and it’s hot and creamy and delicious.
And there’s a town nearby that has an Oatmeal Festival every January. It’s a hoot.
I would probably enjoy an Oatmeal Festival, just because any reason is a good one to party. As for your crockpot oatmeal recipe. Ummm. Jen, I love ya, honey, but I think I’ll pass on that one.
I’m not an oatmeal fan either. I have to drown the taste with butter and brown sugar. So, I so understand. It is good for you though. Have a great day.
Yep, my husband looks at my concoctions and suggests, “you should have a little oatmeal with your butter.”
I actually love oatmeal but it has to have some milk poured in and a bit of sugar on top. Prefer the instant kind because I’m always late and need to rush
This was instant, and that may be its problem. Or, its problem may just be that it is oatmeal. Strange that I’m Scots-Irish and don’t like “porridge.”
That is so great! I love the Irish oatmeal box and the bacon is just the bomb. As mu grandpa used to say: “That’ll make you hunt a bear to slap around.”
Well, I don’t know what the heck your grandpa’s expression means, but I love it and will probably use it
. I think I bought that oatmeal just because it was “Irish.” It is NOT delicious. But, then I can’t think of many “Irish” dishes that I order in a restaurant either…
Hmm, you seem to be somewhat confused. That breakfast seems to be completely healthy ‘apart’ from the oatmeal.
Oatmeals bad for you. A box of it fell of the shelf once and broke my Granddad’s glasses. That kinda thing never happens with Bacon.
So right you ARE! And, that box has sharp edges, so I got a nasty paper cut when I opened it. I guess this is a lesson for us. Don’t eat oatmeal, or you will be wounded and won’t be able to see the cut!
There are two kinds of people in this world: 1) those who like oatmeal and 2) those who don’t.
I’m a #2; especially with fresh blue berries! Yum!
But I have to admit, when done incorrectly it’s the grossest stuff imaginable! I remember one morning, when I was a counselor at a children’s camp, the cooks accidentally burned the oatmeal. Not having anything else prepared for that meal, they went ahead and, um, served it anyway.
Now, there is nothing more memorable than being served burned oatmeal! As proof, 5 years later the experienced kids were still warning the younger ones off!
