Fiction - dump the car and the grandkids come to her! That's 80 more for food. Try to find an apartment based on income -- though there are not enough of those out there, but this is fiction. The reality is, it is up to those of us who can to do little and big things. Something as simple as her relatives (assuming they have any money) buy things like lotion and soap and dish detergent, non-perishables and have them delivered or mailed... that frees a little more money for fresh food. Inviting people to lunch or dinner that we wouldn't normally is a great idea, too.

Shelly,

That is pretty darn close to my income. If it weren't for my son fixing up the downstairs as an apartment for me, I would be in the same fix as your imaginary lady. Rather than pay rent and utilities etc. I contribute about $500 towards household expenses. Almost everything else is Car Insurance, Medicare drug plan, Supplemental medical policy, and my percentage of doctors bills not covered. End result about $100 a month to just fritter away on pure foolishness such as one tank of gas and a movie. :-)

It always bothers me that it's the healthy foods that cost the most for people. I've been on that low end a lot of my life and growing up we knew two fruits - oranges and apples, that was it. I remember the first time I saw exotic fruits like cantelope and pineapple.

I know in our city they run a program called the 'Good Food Box' - we used it about 9 years ago when it was still too much to buy all the food and eat healthy vegetables and fruits for the month. The box has different prices based on family size. For a family of 4 it was $35 and we would get the good food box delivered twice a month. It had all the fresh fruits and vegetables we'd need for the next two weeks.

Come to think of it, it's probably something I should sign up for again as we get paid monthly and you can never buy enough fresh produce to get you through the month and I never think to stop and buy more because we always have frozen stuff - needless to say I think we don't eat enough of this as we should.

Check into the program and see if one is in the area or if it's easy enough to get a group started. The costs are low because they get it at wholesale price from the supplier and they don't add money on it to make a profit.

Shelly, your story is a great encouragement to us all to have an elderly person over for a meal once in a while. Very touching.

Yikes that's scary, but so real. I grow a large garden every year and try to drop off fresh veggies at our old folks home. The people so much appreciate it and I'm happy to give. I don't quite get when people say that buying healthy is more expensive than buying junk. A bag of apples last much longer and is much more filling than a bag of potato chips. I guess it depends on the season tho' :)

The healthy food is what costs the most, it turns out. Junk food is cheap! Just too bad that the elderly think of others, leaving so little options for themselves.
