Have any of y’all gone through “those days” in parenthood?
You know the days I mean.
The house is a mess, the dog is barking, the food is bubbling over on the stove, and the kids look like this?

Maybe you sit down and cry. Maybe you laugh about it and stop long enough to capture the moment with a picture, but there is still the mess to clean. Some days, with all the noise and commotion, all you can think is, “Calgon, take me away!”
All of you Mommy Bloggers out there need to know this:
The cute little toddler you see today will be a grownup before you can blink! You will look at their mature face and wonder where the years went. On the days that you are too tired to parent, and want to just be left alone, stop.
Think!
One day, they will grow up and move on!
That baby in the picture is Ian. He turns a quarter of a century old today! He can eat a whole meal now without getting food all over his face! Usually.

My oldest stepson is a “pistol.” That’s what my Daddy would have called him, anyway. That would mean he is quite a character, and great fun to be around. I didn’t get the pleasure of knowing Ian in his early years; when I met him, he was almost grown. I was immediately drawn to him because his sense of humor is not at all unlike his father’s. That would mean that they are both masters of pun and dry wit.
Ian has had a fascination since childhood with video games and all things Star Wars related. Halloween last year was right up his alley. Unfortunately, he is off living in Portland, Oregon, so we don’t always get pictures in a timely manner (hint, hint). We recently received these from his Halloween celebration. Ian and his beloved, Angela, dressed as Han Solo and Princess Leia from Star Wars.
Now, we knew that they had these outfits when they visited us last fall. Angela told me that Ian was all jazzed about his costume, and secretly dressed in it when she wasn’t around. She said she could hear the excitement in his voice when she called him.
“You’re wearing that costume… aren’t you?” she asked.
“Well, ummm…yes,” he mumbled. She said she could catch him every time.
Last Halloween, they dressed as Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

From the looks of it, Angela enjoys this just as much as Ian does. It’s a good thing they found each other!
Ian, here are your Daddy’s birthday wishes:
Son,
One of the things I’ve always loved about you is the joy you get from playing in the way these pictures show! And I’m proud of you beyond words that you have grown into a fine, loving, caring, and responsible young man. I wish you continuing joy and happiness as you move into the quarter-centuries that follow!
All my love–
Dad
Happy birthday, son. You are a joy to be around, and I wish that Portland, Oregon was not so far away!
Better yet, I wish that I would win the Texas lottery and could come visit you all the time. Wouldn’t that be fun?
Stop rolling your eyes like that!

Yes, I so miss those days and you’re right…a blink and it’s over!!
My kids are all teenagers now but my house is still a mess, the dog is barking and if I’m cooking, food is definitely bubbling all over the stove! On second thought, my son didn’t look too much different from the top pic after he ate a bag of Cheetos the other day.
Maybe things don’t change as fast as we think!!! Hope your son has a wonderful birthday! Loved the Star Wars costumes!!!

No, it changes. You get through the teenage years, and they turn human again.
As mobile as our society is, they wind up moving far away. No, I don’t necessarily want them living with me when they are 30, but I do miss getting to see them. Stop telling me about Cheetos! I’m trying to lower my cholesterol and you just lowered my willpower!
Yes, the Star Wars outfits are pretty great.
Ohhh, I forgot! You inspired me to start an x365, too!

COOL! Yours will be so snarky. I can’t wait.
Yes indeed! times goes by very fast! My daughter is 28, and sometimes I feel that perhaps I spent too little time with her when she was a child. Work and housekeeping took me a lot of time, now I think it was mainly wasted time. Hugs!
lola’s last blog post..Lágrimas negras
It’s easy to look back, Lola, and see what we would have done differently. I keep reading blogs where young mothers complain about “having to stop and play” with their children with their children. It breaks my heart that they don’t see how lucky they are. It breaks my heart that they write about that on the web, where one day the children will see it.
abrazos
Is does go by quickly. I just found myself staring at my almost grown sons on spring break this year. Where did the time go? Though I totally enjoy this stage of motherhood!!
And doggoneit! I’m craving cheetos now!!

Rock Chick is wicked! How dare she mention cheetos.
Yes, Kacey, it is kinda fun when the kids get to that almost grown stage. Except for my youngest stepson, though, the boys are scattered across the country. Somehow holidays lose a lot of their appeal if you can’t bring the kids together.
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday dear Ian,
Happy Birthday to you.
What a nice tribute to your son. You are right, they do go up rapidly. My son will be 38 this year. Yikes. Have a great day.

Yeah, didn’t they do a fine job? I thought those were great.
Awwwww… your son’s older than me! That makes you… not as young as other people. He looks like he’s got some of your spark.

Goofy! He’s my stepson! But, I have a biological son his age and one two years older, and I was married seven years before I had kids. So, yeah, I am not as young as other people! You have a mean streak, Guru!
You are just mad because Dora told you “what for.” Be nice to little old ladies—that’s ME!
Happy Birthday from Canada eh!
Gosh, it goes by quick - and the trouble is you don’t realize it when the pot is boiling over and the baby is eating diaper cream(not a true story), but it’s those moments years later that you’ll wish were upon you again - dang it, you brought tears to my eyes!!! It must be because I am just in the later stage of my kids growing up and it’s kind of hard to get used to and I do so remember all the good times we had and some days I wish parts of them were still here and then I shake myself silly and I am thankful that they are potty trained and we can go to movies, play games and enjoy so many other things together now.

Oh, girl, I didn’t mean to make you cry! But I see some Mommy Bloggers complaining, and it just eats me alive to see it. Yeah, it’s a lot of work to raise them, but every moment should be precious. Life is just too short. Thanks for giving Ian birthday wishes from Canada! Eh?
Best wishes to the birthday boy.
Shelly, If you make it as far as Portland, I’ll meet you at the Powells cafe.

Smart young man, picking a compatible mate, living in Oregon, and having fun! Happy Birthday, Ian.
I went to the extreme, I spent nearly every moment I wasn’t working my 40-58 hours a week with our son until I “couldn’t get away with it any more.” I would not trade a clean house for those moments for anything, but I think I could have balanced it a tad bit.
And I miss our 30 year old at times.
