Thursday Thirteen #42. One Woman’s Trash Is Another Woman’s Treasure

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on June 11, 2008

I thought I would take you on a visual tour of my house for Thursday Thirteen. My sister looks down her nose at my decorating style. She complains that I have too much stuff. And, she thinks my stuff is just “too weird.” Y’all take a look and tell me what you think.

There’s no way in the world I can show you everything, because there are oddities everywhere you look. Most of it came from garage sales and such. To someone else, this was all trash, but they are my “treasures.” I like to call my decorating style “whimsical.” But, I do have a lot of those treasures.

“How in the world do you dust all this junk?” she asks.

The secret is: I don’t! As Quentin Crisp said, “After four
years,
you don’t
notice the dust.”
Besides, I’m old and my eyesight is shot, so I don’t see the dust without glasses. I can never find my glasses! If I don’t see it, I figure the dust isn’t there!

1. When my sister comes to visit, I always feel as if my decorating style is “under a microscope.”

microscope

2. Since she thinks my decorating style “stinks,” I keep this gas mask in the bathroom for her. There are other times it comes in handy, but those shall remain nameless for the sake of Mr. Tucker’s dignity.

3. I keep telling her that there is no “one way” to decorate.

one-way

4. But, she likes to complain. She doesn’t like all the cats (we have five fe-lions). But, there is only one cat allowed on the table. The operative word, of course is “allowed.”

5. When she saw this mannequin, she rolled her eyes in dismay.

6. Then, she saw this mannequin

and this statue!

She said, “Good Lord, cain’t you put clothes on them? You always wanted boobies, and now you’ve got ‘em everywhere you look!” I told her, “I’d loan them my pasties, but I might need them.” [THAT got an eye roll our of her, yes it surely and purely did!]

7. My sister says the place is creepy, because she feels like she is “being watched.”

masks

8. I don’t know what she means.

OK, maybe I did take it a bit too far.

9. She thinks a rubber chicken in the kitchen is in poor taste. Well, you aren’t supposed to eat it, but if I’m cooking, you have to have a sense of humor.

10. I think she really does like my “shoe” spice rack.

11. But, she thinks we have way too many musical instruments sitting around. An organ takes up the living room.

There are guitars in every room of the house (this is only a fraction)

didgeridoo

That long pipe shaped thing in the picture above is a didgeridoo, an Australian musical instrument. I highly recommend it if you have cats that like to hide in the closets. Blow on that didgeridoo, and they come running out of their hidey-holes as if they think an elephant is after them. Very handy!

12. And, my sister thinks my hat collection is ridiculous. She thinks I have too many, but hey! A girl can’t have too many hats.

hats

13. She just throws up her hands when she sees all my stuff.

So, y’all don’t tell her that I posted this!

sssshhh

I love that last one! You have a wonderfully spirited house.

I think you have to have a sister to know the horrors of sisterhood. Heck, it’s your house – decorate it with what you love. My sister always asks me if we own things – the furniture, the large dining room table. It’s just bizarre and very humiliating but very her.

Happy TT

Well, *I* think it’s cool. And that I wish I had the guts to turn my house into such a cool museum.

My sister doesnt like the way I decorate either. Isnt it great that all people are different? Wouldnt it be boring if we were exactly the same?? I think your place has character and style. Happy TT.

I can relate. My sister is tidy and well, not too flavorful. ;-)

But that’s ok. I tease her about cleaning all the day long and letting her boys get dirty so we’re even.

Hope you had a good visit despite your different tastes…

OMG – what a hoot! I LOVE your house decor – to each his own I always say! Thanks for sharing.

Amber Dubois June 11, 2008 at 11:23 pm

OK, I was with you through the gas mask and the mannequins. I was feelin’ the nudie statues. But you lost me with the creepy baby head in the plant. I darn near crapped my pants and I’m tempted to send you the dry cleaning bill!

I like your decoration style ! Nothing is worse for me to come into a home which looks like out of a catalogue ! That’s your taste and you feel well with it, so send your sister to hell or to vomit elsewhere. I have cats everywhere as decoration (and 5 real once) what people think about me I really don’t care ! I love my decoration !

Your house is So Much Fun! I think my favorite is the decap doll head in the plant. It’s probably my favorite because it startled me and then made me laugh aloud in an empty room. Thank for the tour.

To each her own. If it makes you happy, that’s great. Your sister only visits, she doesn’t live there.
Wonderful pics, great sense of humor. Enjoy life, it’s too short not to have a good laugh from time to time.

Wow, your house is awesome! My aunt kinda does the same thing and I LOVE when I get to visit :)

Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Your style is definitely quirky, but I think it shows you have a great sense of humor and originality! Your home should be your refuge, so it should be filled with things that make YOU happy! And I, for one, LOVE the shoe spice rack! :)

Hope you’ll stop by my TT when you get a moment…

Jamie June 12, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Looking around my room at the brass owl, the pensive giraff, the broadway poster, the lion on top of the wardrobe, the spanish mantilla with comb and one of the five felines scratching at the window for admittance …. can’t imagine why I absolutely love your house except that it is definitely a home where love lives.

Great tour and its nice to see someone has a sense of humor(-: The doll head is a riot. I have “scary” dolls through out my house. I call them primitives. No one understands them like I do but I enjoy them and that is all that matters right? LOL DH just rolls his eyes when I make another one or buy one on ebay. I have a cat room and a rabbit room to boot!! lol Oh and you have seen the mannequin legs in my garden. I love those!!! We won’t even get started on my yard cuz most people would think I was wacked….lol I love your shoe spice rack…but I would use it in my shoe garden of course(-:

Just when I thought the culture of individualism has died, I find a true character! Okay, the doll in the houseplant was truly freaky, but everything else said “someone of interest lives here!” I prefer that over a decorated look any day. I’ve seen the latter before … yawn! :)
