Around Town

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on July 14, 2008

We’ve been busily packing for our vacation the last few days. We head out in the morning for South Carolina, and then down to Savannah, Georgia. Before I go, I thought I’d share a couple of images that I saw around town. I’m practicing with that new camera, but I’ve got a lot to learn.

I couldn’t help but notice Mary Jane’s picture hanging on the ceiling at my local coffee house.

Mary Jane

She is directly above the cash register and the tip jar, looking down with a watchful eye.

The owner of Jupiter House, Joey, said that Mary Jane was his grandmother. They had been having troubles with folks “helping themselves” to the money in the tip jar when employees weren’t looking. Joey’s grandmother was extremely honest, and just a little bit stern. Since Joey put her picture over the tip jar, they haven’t had a bit of problems. Don’t we all wish that we had a “Mary Jane” watching over us?

The coffee house has a series of photographs and paraphernalia from The Tomato (a now defunct restaurant that was a local legend on Fry Street). The restaurant began its incarnation as The Flying Tomato, and this was one of the signs it had in it. I just thought it was fun.

I didn’t get a picture of the bumper sticker that said, “If you are born again, does that mean you have two belly buttons.” My husband immediately quipped, “Yes, and you get to join the Navel Naval Reserves.

This is what I live with every day.

Y’all have a fun week. I’ll hope for some WiFi on the road so I can tell you about what we are doing.

I envy you. There are times when the urge to strangle arises, but having someone that quick witted and verbal in your life is a very special blessing that almost always keeps a smile on your face. Have a great vacation.
