When I was a little girl, every now and then my Mamaw made a birthday cake for me. It was always topped with tiny ceramic figurines of circus critters and characters, which in those days were considered quite delightful decorations. I wonder what these looked like when they were brand spankin’ new and had all their paint.
She had used these on birthday cakes for my Daddy and my Uncle when they were young’uns. I think that her Momma used them on Mamaw’s cakes when she was young. That makes these very old (Mamaw was born in 1901 … and, no, she’s not around anymore, bless her soul).
I used these as the decorations on cakes for my boys when they were young, but they don’t get much use anymore. They are usually behind a glass in a display case so the cats won’t get ‘em.
Every now and then, I have to take them out and just look at them and remember. I get lost in the memories of my “little” boys, and I still hear their giggles.
Do y’all have something special like that hidden on a shelf? Do you ever take them out and remember?

When my mother was 55 years old (I’ll be 57 in September) she became ill is ALS. Not long after that, knowing that she would die from that disease, she gave me a set of china that was near and dear to her heart. It wasn’t real expensive, but she so love that service for 12. She told me to take that set of china because she knew I would cherish them long after she was gone. She was so right…I do so cherish them.

It’s so fantastic to have those keepsakes. You can have too many keepsakes (and we do!), but if it has special memories it’s great to pass it down.
