Ersatz Chorizo

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on October 2, 2008

No, I’m not speaking in tongues, and I didn’t just sneeze (so you don’t have to bless me). I guess I’m talking in a foreign language, though. Two foreign languages, actually.

“Ersatz” is a German word that means “substitute” or “replacement.” “Chorizo” is a Spanish or Mexican style sausage that is very spicy. So, I’m talking about “fake sausage.”

I’m not supposed to be eating sausage, because my cholesterol is insanely high. But, I love sausage in my Cowboy Beans, and I like it with eggs (which I’m not supposed to be eating, either). I miss it!!

When I saw this vegetarian Chorizo (Soyrizo) at the grocery store, I fell for it. This brand is Franklin Farms, but they don’t show it on their website. I decided, “What the heck.” I figured it would probably taste as nasty to me as that turkey bacon I tried a long time ago…but let’s face it: I’m desperate! I was hoping that, if it had enough spices, I wouldn’t know I was eating “textured soy protein”. Blech!

Oh, my Thunder! I didn’t realize how this picture would look…do you think it will lose my blog its “G” rating? Gee.

Anyway, last night, I put some olive oil in a pan. I stir fried garlic, onion, sweet peppers and a bit of cabbage. Then, I opened the plastic casing on one of these sausages and squirted it in the pan to fry it. When it was almost done, I added some Egg Beaters (ersatz eggs), and a few tablespoons of picante sauce. We wrapped those in flour tortillas and chowed down.

I was very surprised! No, it doesn’t have the texture of real Chorizo, but it was tasty! I had only expected to eat one burrito, but I went back for seconds. And, I’ll buy these again.

Nobody is paying me to write this post…so you can believe every word I say. At least, any word I say about ersatz sausages.

Oh chorizo, I haven’t had some of that in quite some time! Looking at the picture and reading about your meal makes me hungry. :)

I didn’t mean to make you hungry, but you should try this chorizo. You might not have a cholesterol problem, but you don’t want to get one either!

Isn’t it lovely when we make a way-out-there bet and win!!!

Glad you enjoyed – although do check the fine print, cause I really hope they are as good for you as you do but processed foods can smack you down.

Yeah, I know that processed food isn’t that great, but sometimes a girl has to have it. I’ve been actually depressed not getting to eat bacon. All I can do is not think about it. Hard to do!

Ooohhh… I love chorizo and I’m going to try that. I eat turkey bacon all the time, but it isn’t nearly as good as the real thing. You just sort of get used to it. It’s sort of like the difference between real macaroni and cheese and the stuff in the box with the powder.

Can’t do turkey bacon. No how, no way. I’d never get used to it. But, I think you would like this chorizo…if you can find it.

You must take care of your cholesterol ;-) but if some day you come to Spain for a visit, you could taste plenty of chorizos and lomo embuchado and the king : jamón serrano. You will be in heaven when you taste all these delicatessen.

 If I come to Spain for a visit, I’ll forget all about my cholesterol! jamón serrano…is that ham? OMG! I’m drooling.

I saw that award, and I’m honored! I’ll try to pass it on before too long. Thank you for your kind words, Sweet Friend. Hugs right back at you.

Oh, I’ll have to try it! I love chorizo and scrambled eggs. It’s one of my favorite foods. It’s also bad for you, I know. Thanks for the plug! I’m gonna try it.

I think you’ll like it. Again, it doesn’t have the same texture, but add some tortilla chips, and you’ll not miss it

Oh my, I do love Chorizo and eggs and have been avoiding for similar reasons. If this comes anywhere close … it’s on the shopping list.

Maybe you should send them a bill? :-)

I could send them a bill, but I don’t think they would care. However, if you can find this in your store, I really recommend it. We snarfed up the rest of the sausage, and I’m headed out today to get some more. I didn’t read the package to see if it freezes well. If it does, I’ll buy several packages. My store is pretty well know for dropping weird stuff from their stock. This is pretty weird.
