Only The Good Friday #5

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on November 14, 2008

I’ve been so busy working this week that Friday sneaked up on me! I was going to say it “snuck” up, but I don’t think that’s a word. Busy is good! It means I was working (making money) and can afford to visit my favorite coffee house this morning.

As if an excellent cup of mocha was not enough to bring joy to my life, there is always a surprise I anticipate. Joey, the owner of the coffee house, has artistic capabilities that are sure to bring a grin. He has a “specials board” on which he draws different pictures every day. Ephemeral art. It’s gone the next day, and I don’t see how he can bear to erase it. This drawing of Napoleon Dynamite was one of my favorite.

My skills as a photographer don’t do it justice, but you can see his talents. I’m looking forward to seeing what is on the menu today.

Now, I have invited y’all before to join me on Only The Good Friday to post about something good. We post often enough about the evils in the world. One day a week, we ought to be spreading some good around the internet.

On past Fridays I have gone to great lengths to list tons of things you could do that are good for other people. Today, I wanted to show you that a post for Only The Good can be as simple as a picture of something that makes you smile.

Why am I doing this Only The Good thing? I’m trying to spread optimism. It’s a psychosomatic thing. You know full well that we can “think” ourselves into being sick. We can use our minds to think our way to happy, too.

There are folks who say that it takes 43 muscles to frown and only 17 muscles to smile. I’m not sure that’s true. If it is, you might consider that frowning is more “exercise,” but exercise is no fun. Besides, I’d rather have the wrinkles that form from smiling than those from frowning.

As Mark Twain said, “Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.” And, I bet your Momma warned you: “Your face will get stuck that way.” If we are going to get our faces “stuck,” let’s all be smiling, shall we?

Tell me something this morning that makes you smile. And, if you would like to join those of us who are posting Only The Good, then write a post and come tell me. Whether you join or not, I hope you find plenty of things to make you smile today.

And, if somebody would post a kick butt recipe for bacon brownies, you sure would make my day!

I love those personal touches at a business, especially a coffee shop. Maybe he takes a photo every day of what he has drawn, if not he could — it would make a nice memory.

I posted on play, since I got a 99 cent toy yesterday (and a couple of free ones). I’ve been playing this morning, good, now have to work, also, good (as you know!)

Joey is a hoot. I wish you could see the pictures he makes (and taste his coffee…except do you drink coffee? I don’t remember). Your 99 cent toy looks like fun….but…um…technically it cost more than 99 cents!

Your wish is my command: Bacon Brownies

http://www.baconunwrapped.com/2006/10/bacon-brownies.html

My smiles these days tend to be produced by two little kittens: Mister and Sister. It is absolutely impossible to be depressed with a kitten on your head.

OMG!!! I just died and went to HEAVEN! Who cares about my stupid cholesterol level. I simply have to try this. And, kittens? Gosh yes, having a kitten on your head is fun (but remember that they grow big & still think they can sit on your head!). Thanks, Jamie.

Here is a great idea for “only the good” that I just came across and some of your readers with locations to do this might want to copy.

One of the local restaurants in Holland, MI started a tradition many years ago where they let customers write their names on dollar bills and put them on the walls and other places in the restaurant. When 9-11 happened, they took down all the money and donated it to the Red Cross. Ever since they have been donating to organizations and individuals whenever a need became apparent. Recently, one of the waitresses at the restaurant died from cancer. She was only 44 and the money will be donated to Hospice House of Holland.

A dollar with your name on it that gathers other dollars on a wall of push pins is such a little thing that can grow to do so much good.

I love it. Wonder if it could be done around here…I don’t mean on the blog. At a coffeehouse or something.

Well, I don’t have a recipe for brownies with that special secret ingredient but I see from the comments that someone else apparently does, so that matter is settled. I do however, have my Only the Good post done for today! YAY, YAY! I even had it done by 3 a.m. this morning! Sometimes, I really do amaze myself.

You always amaze ME! Thanks for posting with the Only The Good!

Hey woman! Thank you for that video! You made what was already a good only the good friday even better! I’m in love with those women! I’m up with my OtGF post over at my place. BTW, I haven’t forgotten about the graphic, the extra squares I discovered, or the good medicine goodies, just insanely busy and writing like a mad woman!

I think you were seeing the video on a different post. They all run together, don’t they  ? Keep writing for the NaNonana. I can’t remember it’s name, but I know what you are doing. I’m cheering for you.

USAGE The traditional standard past form of sneak is sneaked (: she sneaked around the corner). An alternative past form, snuck (she snuck past me), arose in the U.S. in the 19th century. Until very recently, snuck was confined to U.S. dialect use and was regarded as nonstandard, but in the last few decades its use has spread, particularly in the U.S., where it is now generally regarded as a standard alternative to sneaked. In formal contexts, however, sneaked remains the preferred form.

Thanks, Brian. My Texas dialect overwhelms my understanding of vocabulary sometimes
