Another Artist For Me To Love: Sissel

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on November 25, 2008

I’ve told y’all before that I’ve “never met a stranger.” To the consternation (and never-ending amazement) of my rather shy husband, I will strike up a conversation with anybody. Sometimes I wish I could just keep my mouth shut. But, other times when I have a conversation with strangers I learn wonderful new things.

At the Celtic Thunder concert the other night, I began talking to the folks sitting next to us. We had both found out about Celtic Thunder by watching our local PBS station. During the course of our chat they told me about another artist that they enjoyed–and they had discovered her on the PBS station, as well. I didn’t recognize her name: Sissel.

After I got home and began to Google her (how did a noun become a verb so quickly?) I discovered that this Norwegian soprano could quickly become a favorite. Here is her version of Shenandoah. Trust me, it’s better than Tennessee Ernie Ford’s version!

Isn’t she grand? Now, I have even more incentive to sit down this week and figure out my iTunes! I need to get some songs on my iPhone so I can listen on those long road trips. Do y’all think that listening to Sissel might soothe the savage beast in me? I’m talking about the one who rears her ugly head when I’m driving the Texas highways frantically trying to find a radio station that plays something besides country or Tejano music. I figure that’s worth a shot.

I am so happy you were able to make it to the Celtic Thunder show. Please write a report on how you liked it.

I could have told you about Sissel. She is Great. But Hayley Westenra is GREATER: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_45W-Lq7ftw#

Some of the thinks I like about Hayley that prove her voice is better, she doesn’t use the “echo” or “reverb” that Sissel uses. Hayley’s voice is pure and on key without any electronic fiddling. Also, check out her sincere smile at the end of this song. And most important, she is a humanitarian, active in the causes that actually do good for people — clean drinking water and bicycles for poor kids in Africa, anti-bullying campaign in elementary schools, visits old folks homes and homes for disabled kids, sings for servicemen in war zones, active in protecting the environment, active in women’s issues, dresses modestly, behaves appropriately, no smoking, no drugs, no pre-marital sex, good exercise and eating habits, doesn’t keep late hours, etc. In other words, she is a good role model for young girls.

While a good role model for young girls is a great thing…that isn’t usually my first thought when picking an artist. I’m glad you told me about Haley, though. I like her, too!

This is may all time favorite folk song. I will put in an additional plug for Hayley. Good luck with the Iphone.

Hope your family has a safe and loving Thanksgiving.

I need luck with the iPhone…actually, I need a teenager to come show me how to use it.
