Only The Good Friday #7

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on November 28, 2008

ornaments

For the first time in many years, I am looking forward to decorating for Christmas. Later today, I will pull out my silver Christmas tree (vintage from the 1950s) and find a place to put it where I hope the cats won’t destroy it. That will be a trick. My friend JennyMcB will tell you that even the top of the refrigerator is not safe from prowling cats. Maybe I’ll dangle it from the ceiling?

I’m actually excited about pulling out the bright and beautiful ornaments I have collected over the past 35 years and finding prominent places to display them. I expect to get totally lost in the memories, because each ornament holds a special place in my heart. Most of them were given to me by friends and family.

I’ll even dress those nekkid mannequins that grace my house. All they will be wearing is Santa hats, but I guess that is better than nothing.

When my children were small, I took the house apart after Thanksgiving and decorated the place to look like a winter wonderland. I always went a little overboard with holiday decorating. That tradition fell apart when the boys grew up and moved away. It didn’t help that I battle depression during the holidays, because I define November and December as “The Months of Loss.”

However, something has come over me. I don’t feel like a Scrooge this year, and I’m a little surprised (and gratified). I’m not sure what it is, but I’m blaming it on Only The Good Friday. Friday is my day to only write about the good things; I have to save the snarky posts for other days of the week. I truthfully believe that forcing myself on one day a week to look at the world with a positive perspective has made me more optimistic.

I know it’s working, because all I really wanted to do today is whine. I totally missed out on celebrating Thanksgiving (but the good part of that is that I don’t like turkey!). I’ve been sick all week and have already been to the doctor once … but need to go again. My fingers and my toes are numb. I’ll have to go find a “Doc-In-A-Box,” because my regular physician is taking a day off today (but, hey, she deserves a day off, so that’s good). That’s all I’m going to say about it.

But, if I can write about “the good” on a day when I feel like I do today, so can you! I’ve invited y’all to join me, and a handful of you have. I appreciate that, too. If you would like to post for Only The Good Friday, jump right in with anything you think is good. Link to this post, so other people can visit you. You could show us a picture of your little snookums, or of anything else that makes you happy. You could share your favorite recipe. Maybe just list three things that are good about today. Anything goes… as long as it is “good.”

And, if you don’t want to post, or don’t have a blog … just think of one good thing about your world today…and tell me. I’d love to hear it. It will make me feel good.

I hope your day is filled with Only The Good!

I’m sorry you’ve been sick, and on a holiday too. That stinks.

I’ve got one for you. My husband just broke a very large and fairly expensive bottle of pure Madagascar vanilla all over my kitchen, but it’s okay, because even a washed floor and hours later it still smells like lovely holiday baking in here ;) .
It might be worth breaking a bottle…nah. But, I’m glad you see the good

I hope you feel better soon. I’ll eat your turkey, since I love it so much.

I’m not going to do a post, but my good thing would be family. I overdosed on them yesterday (in a very good way). Can’t wait to do it again on Christmas. Big hug. :)

I’ll happily send you my turkey for Thanksgiving AND Christmas. Family is very good indeed. Glad you had a good holiday.

Miss Shelly, I think you have been blessed this year due to the joy that you brought to the campers. Many hands contributed and as we made the squares, we were all thinking good thoughts and it all rubbed off as you, yes you, made it happen. Thank you for that good that still makes me smile.

Now go take care of yourself and after you decorate, please let us know if your feline family made any “decorative changes”. Personally, I love coming home to ornaments strewn about the floor.
Maybe the tingling is due to being on the computer too long? I know that I end up with a pinched nerve in my shoulder which can end up with some tingling down my arm. Hope you got that looked at.

That’s not the tingling, Jenny McB. I’m glad you were such a huge part of the Share A Square. It was good, wasn’t it? I hope not to find ornaments on the floor….I don’t love coming home to that…

Hope you are feeling better Shelley – that would really be an ONLY THE GOOD FRIDAY thing!

My good thing is that today was Black Friday & I DIDN’T SPEND A DIME – YIPEE!

Yippee, indeed! I don’t go spending on Black Friday, either. I don’t like the crowds much. Have a good day!
