Only The Good Friday #11–It’s ALL Good

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on December 26, 2008

My husband went into the attic to get a box for wrapping a gift, and came down with the most stricken look on his face. He was so upset he could barely speak. When at last he could articulate his concern, he told me:

When we had our air conditioning coil replaced last summer, the repairman had to remove the pipe that vented our furnace. This pipe goes from the heater closet into the attic, then connects with a pipe that vents it out the roof.

THEY DIDN’T RE-CONNECT THE PIPES!

We have been running our furnace for a couple of months now, and ALL of the exhaust fumes have been venting into the attic! This could have been VERY bad — we could have been overcome by carbon monoxide.

But, we weren’t. It’s all good. A repairman came that very day and put us back together.

Now any OTHER day, that might have turned into a rant. Any day but Friday, I might have raved about the freaking idiot skilled repairman, who could have killed us made a simple mistake. On another day, I’d have gotten out my flying monkeys (I have them, and I’m not afraid to use them!).

However, on Fridays I look at my world from a different perspective. On Friday, I try to see Only The Good (and I’ve done that long before I started Only The Good Friday–see?). So, I’ll just tell you (in a gentle tone of voice) that if you have any repairs done, you should thoroughly inspect the work and ask questions!

Today, I have tons of other things I want to list, because overall it has been a decent week.

  • We have some of our “chicks” back at the nest. Eric’s young’un is home from college for a few days and my son came in from San Francisco (I haven’t gotten to see his handsome face for a year and a half–so that is very good, indeed!). It’s delightful to have them near.
  • Santa Claus brought lots of goodies on his sleigh, not the least of which were chocolate oranges! OMG!
  • I got some jewelry, and scarves, and Sedaris, and some great “cheap sunglasses!”

  • Christmas was peaceful and lovely at our house (and I hope at yours as well).
  • I’m finally getting some feeling back in my hands! For the last six weeks, I’ve had a very strange reaction to some old hand lotion I used. Nothing was working to alleviate it! I finally broke down and took the Prednisone the doctor wanted me to take (I didn’t really want to take “PMS in a bottle) and there seems to be some improvement I don’t want to jinx it by talking about it!
  • My family is coming to visit on Saturday, and the house is clean (sort of). We steamed the carpet to save folks from the cat dander, and the cat has only barfed once!

So, see! Sometimes things can be pretty good! Now, tell me what is going on with you that is good. And, if you want to write a post, tell me so people can find it!

I’m wishing you all a day filled with Only Good!

Wow…well, I’m glad this happened on Only The Good Friday, because otherwise, I might have to join you in that rant. I would have had to beat that “skilled repairman” to a pulp if he’d killed you guys. Seriously, NOT COOL! But uh…right, it’s only the good friday so…yeah…

Mine’s up! ;-) http://tinyurl.com/93u6gx

I don’t know…after doing so many only the good posts, I might not have hurt him anyway (but that wouldn’t stop me thinking about it!).

Look at you beautiful…in your shades. Is that a good book, always looking for a good book to read.

Glad it turned out ok with your venting system, that’s scary.

Love David Sedaris–he is funnier than a rubber crutch (oh, wait…that’s not P.C.). He’s funny. Yes, I like my cheap sunglasses, and yes the venting thing was scary for a few minutes.

Holy cow! Thank goodness it all ended well. Only the good indeed.

Enjoy your “chicks”.

We’re enjoying a beautiful sunny day after several days of pouring rain – the kids even got out on their new wheels (rollerblades for Maya and a skateboard (god help me) for Itai).

Enjoy them, I will. You are one brave gal to get rollerblades & skateboards. Do you have good insurance?

Yikes on the exhaust pipe. That is just plain scary as heck.

Glad you are getting some feeling back in your hands.

Enjoy your family honey. Loved the comment about the carpet. Bwahahahahaha. Only barfed once. Big hug. :)

 Hey, I’m looking at the bright side.

Day after Christmas and I completely forgot it was FRiday. You seem to have made out like a minimally wealthy bandit and it is good news that the hands are improving.

Yep…life is getting better. Hope it’s good for YOU.

Holy Rip! What a scary thing to find in the attic! But I can see how you could turn that around into something good -you found it and thankfully, nothing bad happened to any of you as a result of the problem.
I gave my son a Sedaris book (“Holiday on Ice) and wanted one for myself but didn’t get one. However, I did get five books in all and one I didn’t expect -reading it already -”Me of Little Faith” by Lewis Black. It’s hysterical!
And now, on to the New Year and time for me to put together my recap of the Holiday Events here in my household.
Peace!

Sedaris is great, isn’t he? Have an awesome New Year.

Friday or not, I don’t think I could have been that gracious. There have been 4 deaths just in the last month in Toronto plus 5 near misses from carbon monoxide poisoning, not cool. We have 3 detectors in our house, it’s the law here. Glad you are all okay…ciao

I’m going to get smart and get a detector for my house! Thanks for the visit.

I hope you had/have several Carbon Monoxide alarms, I think everyone should have one, even if they have no valid reason. Enjoy your son and family, and the feeling in your hands!
