Today, I get to hear children giggle. That’s the “good” this Friday. I’ll be telling stories in a school in Mansfield, Texas. I am “the reward” for those children who got good grades in citizenship … and of course I will be doing my best to turn them into laughing hyenas. They may hear a story about “Jack,” or one about Coyote, or about Ananzi the Spider. I’ll be mugging it up and doing my Lucille Ball imitation.
The treat, however, will be mine!
There aren’t too many sounds more beautiful to my ears than the sound of children giggling. When my youngest son was small, his laughter was my favorite sound on earth. He had an infectious giggle that started in the pit of his stomach and erupted. No one could listen to him without laughing along with him.
But, he is a grown man now, with the weight of the world on his shoulders. His giggles are few and far between, and my hearing is not acute enough to catch them when they are halfway across the nation (San Francisco).
Those of you with small children hear giggles every day, and perhaps (as I did) you take them for granted. Their sound might also be canceled by the sounds of squabbling, and sobs, and whining. But, when you hear them –treasure them. Memorize the sound. The years pass quickly, and all you will have are the memories … but, Lordy, those memories are sweet.
If, like me, you don’t have children around to laugh for you, then play this video of little girls giggling in Ethiopia. Go on! I bet you can’t listen to the 20 seconds or so of laughter without giving in to a grin of your own.
Listen, then go out and have a wonderful Friday. May it be filled with Only The Good!

You are so right, there is nothing more precious than a little ones laughter. Sometimes I miss mine being little, then I come back to reality.
Well, when they grow up, we can always borrow someone else’s kids!
I agree with you so much! I used to sit in another room while my step daughter played with her friends and just sip on some tea and listen to them giggle
The video was adorable and definitely put a grin on my face!
I’m glad it did. I have watched them repeatedly…especially when I opened the new jury duty summons.
OMGosh!! How Freakin’ cute can four little gigglin’ girls BE??! Adorable!! Can’t think of a better way to start my day! Thanks for sharing that (especially with those of us who only enjoy that sound vicariously – like when we see the nieces and nephews, or when a good friend shares a great video!!)
Hope your weekend is fantastic and chock FULL of giggles!

I keep watching them just to hear that “music.”
Oh yes… I LOVE the giggles of young children. It certainly is infectious. I also love hearing the laugh of a grumpy old husband who has had little to ‘giggle’ about until I came into his life. Not tooting my own horn, but I do go a little off-the-adult-course sometimes… like singing him ‘John Jacob Jingle-heimer Schmidt’.

Yep, you DO get the sillies. I like hearing anyone laugh, but when kids get their giggle boxes overturned I really enjoy it. And, the kids today DID! It was a riot.
A good Friday for us, we got home safely from Calgary. A little sad though as we will miss sweet Elliotte’s giggles…ciao
