Not Just For Grannies

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on January 11, 2009

Are you “crafty? I’m not meaning “crafty” in the sense of “sly,” but as in “making crafts?” I may have some links that will inspire you, especially if you are interested in crochet.

For the longest while, there were a lot of crafty people coming to visit my blog. They visited because of that Share A Square project I did, making 140 “granny” afghans for children with cancer. Actually, people were so generous that we had enough squares to make another 42 afghans that were delivered to Cooks Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth.

I was amazed by the beautiful squares that were delivered to my mailbox. Who knew that one could make such lovely granny squares? You can see a sampling of them on my Flickr pages by clicking on the link above.

In fact, I had no clue that there were so many people who were enthralled by the crafts of our grandmothers. Our grandmothers worked beautiful stitchery, crochet, and knitting out of necessity and a love of beauty. They didn’t watch television, either, so they had hours to spend creating beautiful things. These days, women are reviving those crafts and making some amazing art; things so lovely that is a shame to reduce them to the status of “craft.” They are also blogging about it!

Two particular groups come to mind, for those of you who are hooked on needlework. If you haven’t found them, I want to direct you there for some inspiration!

At The Crochet Along, folks share the many different projects they do. You’ll see everything from slippers, to afghans, to doilies, to sweaters, and much more. If you enjoy crochet, this site is a feast for your eyes.

Granny Along is about “granny squares,” but you don’t have to be a little old lady to be a part of it. If you have a picture in your mind of the “old-time” granny squares, this site will be an eye opener for you. Those women are so creative, it turns me plumb green to see what they can do.

I hope I made all you “hookers” happy. If you know of other places where crafters can get together, I hope you’ll add a comment and a link. Now, can I twist your arms and convince some of you to create some teeny-tiny medicine bags for The Good Medicine Project?

Gah!!! My sewing machine is on the blink (all 3 of them, actually) but I’m working on charms for the bags. If you are desperate for bags I’ll think of something or hand stitch some… let me know! Happy New Year!!!

Charms are good! I’m not desperate yet…but I’ll let you know if I get that way  Heck, I’ll tell the whole world—or at least all six people who read this blog. And, a Happy New Year to you, my friend.
