I know some of you out there sit at your desk slaving away writing stories and plays and such. Maybe you have a dusty manuscript stashed in a file drawer? Here is an opportunity you can’t afford to miss. I’d have told you about it much sooner, but I just got the e-mail today.

Dentyne® and Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) have joined to sponsor a Playwright Contest. You could have your play performed to a live audience by professional actors on a stage in New York City! But, you have to write in a hurry. Here’s the scoop:

What:
DENTYNE® REALATIONSHIPS GENERAL PUBLIC PLAYWRITING CONTEST (just click!)

Who can enter?
The contest is open to all amateur playwrights who are legal residents of the 50 US states and DC and who are 18 years of age or older at time of entry.

Requirements & Timeline:
Entrants must submit original, two-person plays that take place in a contemporary setting on the theme of sustaining personal relationships in the age of technology. One grand-prize winner will be chosen in the general public contest to receive a $7,500 prize plus a trip to New York City to have his/her play produced and performed live by MTC!

Entries must be postmarked by 3/9/09 and received by 3/16/09. Click here for more details.

Y’all all know Dentyne®, the gum brand behind the popular Make Face Time™ ad campaign? Here is a blurb from the press release:

The theme of the plays resonates with Dentyne® gum’s popular Make Face Time™ ad campaign, which depicts everyday people spending time getting face to face. In fact, a recent national survey conducted by the brand shows that an overwhelming two-thirds of Americans wish they could get more face-to-face time with family and friends while nearly 80% said they feel more connected to another person when they’re face-to-face, rather than when communicating through technology.

The national survey also revealed that:

  • Three-fourths of Americans agree that online social networks can never replace face time with friends and/or family.
  • About half of Americans feel they don’t get enough (face) time with the ones they care about most.
  • Young Americans are texting more than touching: two-thirds say they have used technology to tell someone they love them; one in five (20%) have used technology to break up with someone.

“The ‘Make Face Time’ campaign is a simple but powerful reminder that the most important connection of them all is the human connection,” said Josette Barenholtz, marketing director for Dentyne®. “Most everyone uses technology to connect, but there really is no substitute for the powerful emotional bond we create when we get face to face. We are pleased to be supporting Manhattan Theatre Club, which provides the unique face-to-face experience of live theatre.”

If you have it in you, start writing (or tell a friend). The clock is ticking! And, if you win I hope you remember who told you about this!

Why are you still on the internet? You are supposed to be writing!

I heard about this yesterday and thought, “Dang, wish I’d known earlier.” Or “Dang, wish I had that old college script laying around!” (I do love Dentyne, though! Yummmmm!)

I thought they told us about this a bit late, myself. Yep. Dentyne is good…but having enough time to write a script would have been better
