Something To Crow About! Only The Good Friday

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on March 6, 2009

Sunday mornings were my favorite part of the week when I was a child. rooster.jpg We got up early and scrubbed for church (no I didn’t like that part). Usually, before we went to worship, we ate a quick breakfast of milk toast, which is exactly what it sounds like with a little sugar on it.

That was just to “tide us over.” After the morning mass at St. Laurence Episcopal Church, with Father Maseo (who looked like a movie star!) presiding, we came home and Daddy cooked “breakfast for lunch.”

My Daddy was the Lord of the Kitchen on Sundays. He put on an apron and fried huge amounts of bacon (my favorite food on the planet) and eggs (my second favorite). He whipped up a batch of homemade biscuits and used his bacon grease to make a gravy. Daddy made waffles and we had molasses from East Texas to go with it.

Naw, he didn’t put any fruit on the table (unless there was cantaloupe in season). It was a table full of cholesterol, and we gorged ourselves on it. I loved those breakfast for lunch days, and I’ve been missing them a lot.

For an entire year, I have been battling my cholesterol. It’s almost time to get it checked again … and I’m hoping everything I have been doing has helped. One thing, I had done was to cut back on eating eggs. The rumor I heard was that eggs would raise my cholesterol.

WRONG!

I just found out that Eggland’s Best brand eggs has a high falutin’ sounding patent from The U.S. Government. It’s titled “Eggs Compatible with a Cholesterol Reducing Diet and Method of Producing the Same.” If you are like me, when you read that you thought, “Say what?

The company claims: “Clinical tests have shown that people on a low-fat diet who ate 12 Eggland’s Best eggs a week did not increase their serum cholesterol level .” Supposedly, their eggs have 38 mg less cholesterol than other brands of eggs. Hot dog!

I don’t know if that is true, but I’m willing to believe it. I have some catching up to do! Twelve eggs a week? I guess I probably can’t prepare my eggs my favorite way: fried hard in bacon grease and mashed all flat. But, heck, I’d almost eat a raw egg, just to get to enjoy them again.

Almost!

I figure that this news is something to crow about, so to speak. At least I can cluck about it a little. Now, if those scientists can come up with a way to raise a pig that produces bacon that has 38% less cholesterol, I’m going to invest in pork bellies!

But, I’m going to eat eggs again! Guess what brand?

That’s the “good” that I have to share for Only The Good Friday. I tried to get Only The Good established as an “official meme” over at The Daily Meme, but either my e-mails went to his spam box or he has been too busy to answer. I’ll keep trying. I don’t have Mr. Linky yet, because on my blog that’s almost overkill. Every time you comment, there are three links to you.

Are you interested in writing an Only The Good Post? Here is what I have told you before:

For some people, Fridays are “good” because they are the end of the work week. For other people, Fridays are “good” because they are the Sabbath day. For me, Fridays are “good” just because I say so.

Friday is the one day out of a week where I refuse to be pessimistic; I refuse to write a post that is snarky; and I actively search for the “good.” I’ve discovered that if you practice looking for the good, it becomes much easier to find!

You can join me, and several of my friends, if you like (I’m trying to spread this “optimism virus” on the internet). Write a post about something good in your world, or tell us about your favorite charity. Tell us about a book or a song that gives you delight. You can even post a recipe you think we might enjoy (especially if it contains bacon!). If you do post, please link back to this page so your readers can join, and others can find you.

And, if you don’t want to post, then take just a minute to think … then post a comment to tell me something good going on with you today. Here’s hoping your day is filled with Only The Good.

Thanks for the egg tip. Sunday dinner was special at my house because we had roast.

 I notice my Only The Good Friday Post did not show up… but it’s there. Are Schools Killing Creativity in Kids? is a great post also… but my Only The Good Friday post is about a 12 year old that knows how to spread good works.

Thanks Shelly for all your doing to push the “Good Friday Word.”

I FINALLY got a “Only The Good Friday” up!!! I’ve been slacking, but I’m up this week! http://tinyurl.com/7yhhss

Also, hmmm, eggs and bacon, I so want both now! Unfortunately, I’m not partaking of either right now, because I have 14 days until I’m in a bikini. ;-) Have you tried turkey bacon? I know, I know, blasphemy! lol

OH, and uh…it’s your birthday? Well, I have to go edit my post then!

Karinas last blog post..Bit of Randomness

Glad to have you back! I’ve tried turkey bacon…and posted about it. That particular experience is not an OTGF post! You will be in a bikini with all that weight you lost! Whoot! Have a great weekend.

Cool… eggs again!! I enjoy a fried egg sandwich at least once a week (fried in PAM spray – doesn’t match the flavor of bacon – but… it’s and egg).

I, of course, forgot what day it is… please, don’t go read my post for today… LOL

 I didn’t get to actually read on Friday, so I read it on Saturday. Dadgum! I hope things get better soon!

Mo March 6, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Yahoo. Lets hear it for eggs. I decided a long time ago that any diet that didn’t include bacon and eggs at least on rare occasions was not worth living for.
