No More “Peek-A-Boo” Blog

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on March 14, 2009

Can you see me now? My blog has been playing “Peek-A-Boo” with my readers and with me lately. I apologize for the inconvenience, and I hope it isn’t going to happen anymore since I changed domain name servers to Liquid Web.

Regular readers will know that I’ve been frustrated with my old blog server for a long time. It’s not that I think they were particularly “bad” (in fact, they had a pretty good record for being on-line most of the time), but they weren’t working for me. I don’t understand technology well, and when I’m having problems I want to be able to speak to a human.

With my former blog server, any time I had a question, the only way I could contact them was to go to their website and write a “help ticket.” Guess what — if my blog was down, then theirs was, too. That left me sitting here high and dry. Sometimes, I had to wait a couple of days for an e-mailed answer. Y’all probably could hear me beating my head on the desk and wailing.

Back when my blog was hijacked by “sattan,” I visited with my fellow Texan, Heather Sanders, at Oh My Stinkin’ Heck. That classy lady has some fantastic WordPress tutorials on her site (I wish she still did personal blogging, because she’s “funnier than a rubber crutch,” as we said in the days before the “politically correct” movement). On her site, I noticed her recommendation of Liquid Web as a hosting service.

I put off the change, because I was paralyzed by fear of the unknown. Yesterday, as I waited for hours for my former host to get back on-line, I decided to make the switch. Armed with information from Essential Keystrokes, I began the process. My fears were unfounded. Changing domain name servers could not have been easier! Those adorable young men who offer tech support at Liquid Web helped me through the process yesterday afternoon and I was up and running by this morning.

Liquid Web says they offer “heroic support” and offer telephone support 24/7. That’s going to be a relief to me. It makes me even happier that the price I will be paying is essentially the same, but I get THREE TIMES the web space AND that heroic support! It remains to be seen whether their hosting service is more reliable … but at least when I have a problem I can talk to someone about it!

If you are a blogger, and want to host your own WordPress domain, I suggest these things:

  • Browse through the WordPress tutorials at Oh My Stinkin’ Heck. You’ll still need to get information from the Wordpress Codex from time to time, but Heather speaks in language that folks can understand.
  • Before you choose a domain name server, make certain you will get the support you need. Shop around, and definitely consider Liquid Web.
  • Don’t be afraid to try it. After all, what’s the worst that could happen? If you back up your files, the worst that can happen is that you have to load them again. From experience, I can tell you that doing that isn’t difficult either.

So, thanks to all those young men who helped me at Liquid Web. If you can get here in the next fifteen minutes, I’d love to buy you a coffee down at Jupiter House. That goes for all of you readers, too … so go find your keys.

Sounds like “Only The Good Saturday” also…
I have been away too long but have too much negativity going on around here right now. I’ll be back when life is more enjoyable for me. Miss y’all.

It will get better…hang in there.

I had trouble accessing you only once, I think it was yesterday? Glad you found a solution, with nice young men to boot. Coffee sounds great, I’ll get my keys and meet you in about 3 days :)

Glad you got things fixed. Don’t forget the new http://wordpress.tv Great video tutorials! Especially good for newbies just getting started in Word press.

Joseph Scott is “big Cheese” for Wordpress. He looks at everything Wordpress and makes sure there are no bugs.

I’m part of a Wordpress dinner group that meets once a month. Very good information. Joseph Scott is a member of the group. So interesting. Get lot of help and information

I’m sold on Wordpress.

Oh, man. I’m jealous. I wish I had a dinner group to meet with around here. It would be so nice to just sit down with other bloggers and get input!

Without it, I never would have gotten the nerve to make the switch. I appreciate you writing it in language I could understand  . So much of this working with websites and code is very daunting for people like me. Fortunately, generous people like you give us info! Thank you!

I just changed my hosting also. It hasn’t been exactly easy but I am so glad I did. Service is key.
I like being able to call them 24/7 and they answer even my really dumb questions.

I’ll have to check out Liquid Web. I have been doing research on web hosts.

Glad your are up and running and happy.

Yep. It makes all the difference. I was tired of hyperventilating while I waited for answers that sometimes never came! Good luck with your new host, too!

There’s nothing as annoying as having something wrong, but it is out of your hands! But good luck with the new hosting, let’s hope that it will go well.

Derek Wongs last blog post..See, Do

I’m going to hope it goes well, Derek. Not having much technological knowledge, I NEED to be able to talk to a support person. My thrill with these guys is that they don’t “talk down” to me. They speak in plain language that a little old lady can understand
