Since I am quite notorious for my black thumb not a green one, last year, just for the heck of it, I dug up the old smallish flower bed that runs alongside the house, below my kitchen windows. And in it, I planted tomatoes, green pepper and jalapeno pepper plants. Mainly to see if I could keep any of this array alive and get anything at all from the plants. I think my yield was about 20-22 ripe tomatoes, two tiny green peppers and about 10-12 jalapenos. (I could have had more jalapenos but for some reason, if Maya spied a baby one growing I had to keep her from picking them off way to early.) I thought then about this year I would plant again in that flower bed but try to space the plants a lot better. Plus I though heck, why not plant veggies in the flower beds in the front of the house too this year. Last week, Mandy started to dig up the ground in the front beds and I thought boy, what a nice gesture! She's gonna dig that up, till it a little and have it already for me to slap some veggies in there. Wonder if I should let her in on my scheme?

Doesn't it feel good to get dirt under your fingernails? No? Well, you'll enjoy going outside to get something for dinner, it's the best. I sent off some stuff today, and sorry, a little more grousing :) I wrote the note and sealed it up in the box a few days ago. You are right, I've got to stop, leave the grousing to the grouse. Oh, we have a plague of grasshoppers up here in August, do your cats eat them?

Wait till you see the "Only The Good Friday" post tomorrow. Your "health club" has a lot of members and I've got another opportunity for you to be a truly wonderful human being (you needed another project - right?)

Yay for gardens!!! For some practical color with flowers add marigolds (to repel insects) also plant chives and garlic and onions. If you start them from seed they won't bloom til next year, but if you get sets you can let some of them go to seed for pretty purple and white flowers along with pest protection. Also try to get (catch or buy) a couple of Preying Mantises. Their fav snack is hoppers, and ladybugs (live by the thousand from Home Depot, etc.) will eat any aphids.
Get down n dirty, mama!

We have a veggie garden every year. My dad has a huge one. He could feed the county! He gives his away to friends and anyone who wants it. We share ours too but we don't have as much as he does! There is nothing like fresh home grown veggies! I love them(-: Yummy salsa, BACON, lettuce tomato sandwiches(-: You get the picture(-: Enjoy your garden. I hope the snakes and fire ants don't enjoy you to much though!

Hoooray for you!! Unless I can get all this construction/destruction stuff out of my back yard PDQ, the garden will not evolve this year. I usually am very liimited in what I grow. My best accomplishment is my tomatoes... the bell peppers have done ok and I did get a couple juicy cantaloupe. But this year I will probably have to go to the Farmers' Market not far from here.

I am planting a garden this year! I am normally terrible with plants (and for that matter, animals that don't whine for food and water, too) but last year I decided to do some flowers when we had the new front porch put on our house and I did it!!! They grew beautifully, so this year the hubby and I decided to try our hand at vegetable gardening, as well. Fortunately, we don't have monkey grass, poison ivy, grass snakes or fire ants or you could be assured that there would never be anything other than weeds growing in my yard! LOL

I saw on Facebook that you were planting a garden. I'm going to stick with basics, because it has been a long time since I tried my hand at this. Those fire ants, snakes, and the poison ivy stop me in my tracks some days, but I keep getting right back out there. We'll have to compare garden notes (though I think the difference between Illinois & Texas would probably negate any info we might share). At least we can whine to each other. Do you have grasshoppers up there? That is the bane for gardeners around here.
