I’ve been lost in the “bowels” of my blog the last few days. It was time for some blogging maintenance! I can only concentrate on one thing at a time, and if I’m working on code and cleanup, my creativity suffers, so I have been “hiding out.”
I had noticed in my statistics that a reader had looked at one of my very old posts, and out of curiosity I looked at it again. My jaw hit the floor! The text on it was wonky and the sidebar of the blog didn’t show!
It turned out that the post was from the first three months when I was blogging on Google’s “Blogger.” In my fourth month of blogging, I switched to a WordPress blog. The files were imported from Blogger, and I never really looked at them again.
It turns out that there is a lot of code in those old posts that messes with the way WordPress works. On Blogger, I had often chosen to use larger text. When that was imported to WordPress, it made the text
Ouch!
I’m sorry if you tried to read one of my old posts. Some of them are actually pretty decent. Did you know about the connection between Texas and chewing gum?
I’m repairing the posts now, and I have other things to repair as well:
- About half of my 700+ posts don’t have “tags” on them, because I listened when someone said it “didn’t matter.” It does matter if you want traffic, and if you want your Google ads to show relevant advertising. The ones I repaired yesterday have gotten traffic today for the first time in a year.
- My old Blogger posts had images that needed to be uploaded to WordPress (they don’t show if Blogger is down, and I can’t cancel my Blogger account without saving those pictures!).
- I have broken links like crazy, so I’m using the plug-in called Broken Link Checker to try to repair those.
- When I started blogging, I just kept creating new “categories,” so I have 52 of them! I think I need to lose a few, so I’m re-categorizing posts.
I hope y’all are “blogging smarter” than I am! I think I have my work cut out for me. But, I’ll be back tomorrow with an Only The Good Friday post and on Saturday to tell you about My Neck of The Woods.

I came by back when you were making Thorne weep and then of course she made me weep and it was all good
I had such a hard time leaving a comment but I’m pretty sure it was my computer Sybil who was the problem
I’ve gotten smarter about tags since I looked at some of the old ones and had no idea what they meant!
Good luck with all the blog cleaning
A cry is good, now and then. But, this crying I’m doing over blog cleaning is NOT good. You have a computer named “Sybil?” I must come up with a “demonic” name for mine…hmmm
.
Thanks for stopping by.
I just found your blog the other day – I love it! Good luck with the cleaning up.
A few weeks ago, I thought I had backed up my blog of something like over 500 posts – and then realized they had been completely deleted.
Talk about a sick feeling…I checked my feeds and they were only partial posts, so basically – my whole blog from the past two years is GONE.
Oh well…easy come, easy go, right?
Now I get to celebrate my 100th blog post all over again!
Take care!

I swear to God, Donna, you just brought me to tears! I am so sorry that happened. Maybe subscribe to e-mails of your blog, and just file those in your account — just in case! I’m gonna go back up my blog! Thanks for visiting.
Awwww you went and reminded me about tagging the old posts. I’ve got two years of “it doesn’t matter” tagging to do. Then you went and hit the procrastination fairy with a right hook … thanks loads.

Are you pulling out all that gorgeous red hair yet? I did it over at the new site yesterday. I’m having coding nightmares. I’m not sure if the Gods are helping me or playing tricks… There is a thursday thirteen from February on the top page and I have no freakin’ idea why. I’ve got my OtGF all ready to go live, but still need to do My Neck (like wring it? No… hehehe)
Muaaaah!

I don’t know what tags are(-: I have a blogger blog and I guess I am just kinda learning about all that stuff. One thing I always wondered is what is the blogging etiquette? They need to have a list of rules to follow for newbies(-: Maybe you can make up some rules for blogland(-: Fridays on my blog about fertilizing …lol I will try to incorporate the good friday part with that somehow next friday(-:

Tags? They are kinda the key words in your content. If you are showing pictures of lilacs, for instance, you might tag your post “lilacs in bloom,” “gardening,” “photo.” Then, if someone is Googling for lilacs they would come up (those probably aren’t the best examples). I haven’t looked at blogger for awhile, but there oughta be a way to tag. Is there a white box under the post where you put them? Blog Etiquette? I’m probably not the Ann Landers of blogging
