Royer’s Cafe in Round Top, Texas. My Neck of the Woods.

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on April 11, 2009

We were cruising around in South Texas a few years back, when we found ourselves in the little town of Round Top. I told you that my neck of the woods covered all of Texas, didn’t I? Well, we were exploring and had gotten hungry, but couldn’t find a Dairy Queen on those back roads. In “downtown” Round Top, we saw the little cafe pictured below.

To be perfectly honest, I wanted to keep on driving, because Royers Cafe looked at first glance like a dive, but then I sniffed the air. My mouth started to water as the aromas from their kitchen found my nose. “Stop NOW!” I shrieked, and my obedient husband obliged.

I was very surprised to find that we had to wait for a table in that little place. It was packed to the gills with people who had driven from miles away specifically to eat there. One diner who walked out the door as we walked up said, “Save room for the pie!” Quite frankly, no one has to tell me to do that.

A look at the menu simply blew me away. They serve the regular fare you would expect, but they also serve salmon and quail! I was told to order anything that was followed by “OMG!”

I ordered “Bud’s Salad OMG!” That’s exactly what I mumbled as I crunched away. I tell you whut!

We were mugging it up.The interior of the cafe is “decorated” with all manner of ephemera: old posters, album covers, newspaper clippings. It’s wall to wall! If the food hadn’t been so delicious, I wouldn’t have been able to eat for all the wall reading I was doing.

And those pies? Let me just tell you that they have a mail order pie business for very good reason. My Mamaw didn’t make better pies than theirs! And, if anyone wanted to sign me up for their “Pie For Life Plan,” for a mere $10,000.00 (shipping included in the price), I’d probably die of gratitude … or a heart attack.

If you are in the area, be sure to check the website for the Round Top Chamber of Commerce – they have antique shows !

This is one of a series of posts I am doing on Saturdays called “My Neck Of The Woods.” Each Saturday, I will post about something in my area, or in my state, that a tourist passing through here might not know to find. I invite y’all to join me and tell about your neck of the woods. Read the page about it, and if you’d like to post, follow the directions and I’ll link you here. Soon, nobody will need those guide books, because they will have us!

I love old dinners and drive-ins. I worked in one for years.

I have always wanted to go antiquing in your neck of the woods now I am really tempted to make that dream come true.

I tell you that if you like antiques you can find them here! There are so many wonderful antique stores around…but my budget doesn’t allow the spending any more, so I just take pictures when I can

When you finish eating, drop by my neck of the woods and talk to the animals.

It has been a busy week at the homestead here in Sacramento. I have neglected my blogging ‘business’. I will be back soon.

I watch Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network all the time. I wonder if Royer’s has ever been recognized by Guy Fieri who does that show? Anyway… sounds like you had a great salad… of course you did… it had BACON on it!

Girlfriend, why is it that I always seem to get hongry whenever I visit your neck of the woods? Do you realize that I live 10 miles from the only good restaurant in our lil town (great Mexican food!), and at least 25 miles from anything else?!
Well, I’m going out for a spaghetti dinner tonight, and Jerry usually puts on a good feed. It’s a fundraiser for our choice for “Honorary Mayor” up at his dude ranch, The Lazy Lizard (yes, I’ll be taking my camera for an upcoming MNotW post). Hope you and yours have a lovely weekend!

You have the coolest places in your neck of the woods!! We have some, too, I just haven’t been able to get to them lately.

I worked my way through college in diners and dives and am quite fond of them. The atmosphere is usually second to none. If they have good food, you can’t lose!!!

Do you ever watch the show Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food TV? The food and the crowds in some of the places featured is amazing!

Yes, it’s one of the few shows I’ve deigned to watch. I enjoy seeing those old diners on TV, but find that I enjoy searching for them even more. I’m addicted. I never worked in food service. I have a “temper,” and don’t think it’s my realm. Did the Rock Chick ever get her cat boots on with a customer? That would be a story!
