Being Good To The Earth. Only The Good Friday.

Only The Good Friday

Was it thirty eight years ago already? Yes, it was! In fact, this year makes thirty-nine. On April 22, 1970, the modern environmental movement was born as the very first “Earth Day” was celebrated. The goal was a healthy and sustainable environment; and approximately 20 million Americans became involved. Are you ready to celebrate Earth Day next Wednesday?

Can I admit to you that I have not always been friendly to our environment? Oh, it wasn’t that I didn’t want to be, but it wasn’t convenient to recycle back in my younger years. I wear a size nine shoe, but I have left a much bigger carbon footprint. I had plenty of excuses in those days long ago:

  • “Our city doesn’t have trash pickup and we have to burn our trash.”
  • “I don’t have anywhere to keep all those aluminum cans, and we’ll get cockroaches! Ewww!”
  • “It’s just paper towels! Everybody is using them.”
  • I don’t know how to diaper a baby with cloth diapers, and I don’t want to have to deal with washing them, and besides I hear that cloth diapers can give a baby a rash!”

I want to apologize to future generations of archaeologists. I have to disagree with my friend Thorne. She believes future archaeologists will find “lumps of glass fused in fires created by the methane gasses released during garbage decomposition, broken lamp fixtures and bent satellite dishes, tons of ceramic tile and other construction waste.”

I think they are going to find my children’s loaded diapers.

But, I’m changing my ways! That’s my “good” for today. Since last year, I have been discovering that by “going green” you can save some green — as in cash! Oh, I know that there are a lot of big changes that you can do to help the environment that cost a lot of money. Those are important to do if you can afford them. But, in our everyday activities we can find tiny changes we can make that are painless, affordable, and beneficial to the environment. I’m on a journey to redeem my past by being frugal and reducing my carbon footprint at the same time.

Quite frankly, Thorne is teaching me a lot about that. At Thorne’s World, she keeps featuring marvelous posts that get me excited about making art from things we consider trash. It has made me look at the world around me in a whole new way.

So, tell me your plans for Earth Day. Or, tell me what YOU think is “good” today.

Follow the link for instructions if you would like to join “the game.” I’ve discovered that if you practice looking for the good, it becomes much easier to find! Why don’t you test my theory? Come back tomorrow, and I’ll probably be snarky … but never on Friday.

Hey, I just got picked for Student Saturdays! Woot!

Thorne, I use cloth diapers on my kids. ;) We’ve saved a small fortune on diapers, and they’re really not all that difficult. Certainly more so than throwing crap away, but we’ve gone with that mentality for a long time now and look at how well THAT’S treating us!

In fact, my littlest, the six month old, is sleeping upstairs right now in a diaper I know won’t leak a bit–’cause I could customize it for her “needs”…and not a single part of it will ever be in a landfill.

That’s something that helps me sleep better, anyway. ;)

I’m excited to join you at Blog on Smog, Shelly!

@Amber It’s so cool to have you join the crew! I know you will make an excellent addition to the Blog On Smog team. You know that I love your hilarious outlook on life, and I know you will do a fantastic job (don’t razz me about the diapers –I should never have admitted tossing them in the landfill–next time I will lie)
:???:
@Thorne ditto about the diapers  But thanks for getting me involved!

I added all those diapers times four! Yikes!!!! The article you wrote was great! What a cool site, too! I’ve been meaning to start researching something else I can start doing and Earth Day seems like a great day to start! Thanks for the reminder ;)

@Jessica Thank you for the kudos! Feel like writing for Blog on Smog…or is the pressure too great? I know you have a lot on your plate. Yep, Earth Day is a great place to start — maybe call it “Earth YEAR.”

You know what’s funny? I ALMOST included stuff about reducing my own carbon footprint on my OTGF post today. It would have fit with my “foot” theme for the day in fact. But, I decided to save it up for another post, and well, with Earth Day being next Wednesday, maybe I’ll post it then, but I too have been “slowly” but surely working on being more environmentally friendly in the last year. I am heading over to read Blog on Smog right now.

Oh right, and my OTGF post is up: http://bit.ly/RgSep

As a child… my mom never used paper towels but recycled her newspapers instead. My babies were raised in cloth diapers. I think things changed as a matter of convenience… not thinking it may hurt the environment. It’s a challenge for me to give up those conveniences for the sake of better surroundings.

@Nana You aren’t kidding that it’s a challenge! Convenience seems to be “king.” Changing habits in order to leave a smaller carbon footprint is proving to be one of the hardest jobs I’ve tackled, because we are so thoughtless about our actions. I’m going to get better. I’ve decided that this is the year I go green (or at least chartreuse) Hold me accountable, won’t you?

I used cloth diapers at home and loved them — actually had less diaper rash (read: only one instance over both kids). And when my diaper service went out of business and I switched my two-year-old to disposables, she potty trained within a month. Gotta love it.

Me, I’ve got Good Book Talk today, Shelley. And the Demo Tapes IS available in e-format for us greenies…

Now, if I could only manage the hills around here, I’d bike to the school this afternoon when I go to read to the kids. That’s my goal by the fall, definitely! One less trip in the car.

@Susan, All you folks and your cloth diapers are not easing my guilt AT ALL! I got rid of my bike several years ago, because it was cluttering the garage and needed a lot of maintenance that I didn’t know how to do. I’m thinking it wouldn’t be a bad idea to find a used bicycle in good repair to clutter the garage again!

In Kindergarten they taught us, “If you make a mess, clean it up.”. It’s amazing how we forget that simple lesson. As a result there is a pile of plastic twice the size of Texas floating in the Pacific Ocean.

We all need to go to work cleaning up our mess and saving a few dollars isn’t bad either.

@ Jamie. Yep, all we ever really needed to know they tried to teach us in kindergarten. Pity it didn’t stick for so many people!

Carbon footprint has to do with how much CO2 you contribute to the climate change problem. Ecological footprint includes pollution, wasting non-renewable resources, etc.

I’m sure Shelly will get around to explaining it in a future blog!

Amber and Susan (close your eyes, Shelly!),
I used cloth diapers with my daughter, too. I had a diaper service which I loved, but when I moved to the desert there were none out this far, so I washed my own. Back then it wasn’t a question of being green for me, it was what I thought was best for my baby combined with the fact that 30 years ago those saggy disposables looked awful on a baby!! I tried them a few times when we were out and about for extended periods, but my angel always got a rash from them, so I stopped doing that, too.
Call me nuts, but seeing those bright white diapers hanging on the clothesline all in a row always touched my heart.

No cloth diapers here, I admit, but only one child, at least. We did use the ones with the little squares that changed colors when he was wet – and he never had diaper rash – that I can remember, but I am old.

We lowered our footprint, if only by moving from 1746 square feet or so down to 450 and then 640, but then let’s not discuss how much gas it took to move from one to the other diagonally across country.

Can’t wait to read what y’all wrote on Blog on Smog. Thanks!

Oh my, I haven’t done OTGF this week, been too distracted by the good weather.
It’s good to see people interested in their impact. I must admit I’m a bit schizo in my approach, I like paper towels. But I try not to do some bad stuff. I spend a lot of money on organic produce, eco-friendly cleaning products, and a lot of effort on recycling. But I do far too much laundry and we don’t take short showers. I never use pesticides or herbicides-talk about poisoning the earth! But I never challenge my relatives that do. I used cloth and disposable diapers at different times. We tried to build our house green in 2004, but had to give in on some things because our builder thought green was a pain in the rear. So you see, we are a bit of a hybrid so far, but as the world is changing it is becoming easier to be good. Hmmm, I just had a brainstorm, I could make millions if I invented sustainable paper towels and toilet paper!

Shelly – I have to apologize – I’ve been very busy lately so sorry for the late comment. Your post at blogonsmog was excellent! And thank you for all the free ads for the header contest and call for more bloggers! I have to confess I’m a bit jealous as you drew more comments on your first post over there than I have on any single blog in the last year. Keep up the good work and I’m looking forward to your next post.
