Shelly - I have to apologize - I've been very busy lately so sorry for the late comment. Your post at blogonsmog was excellent! And thank you for all the free ads for the header contest and call for more bloggers! I have to confess I'm a bit jealous as you drew more comments on your first post over there than I have on any single blog in the last year. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to your next post.

Oh my, I haven't done OTGF this week, been too distracted by the good weather.
It's good to see people interested in their impact. I must admit I'm a bit schizo in my approach, I like paper towels. But I try not to do some bad stuff. I spend a lot of money on organic produce, eco-friendly cleaning products, and a lot of effort on recycling. But I do far too much laundry and we don't take short showers. I never use pesticides or herbicides-talk about poisoning the earth! But I never challenge my relatives that do. I used cloth and disposable diapers at different times. We tried to build our house green in 2004, but had to give in on some things because our builder thought green was a pain in the rear. So you see, we are a bit of a hybrid so far, but as the world is changing it is becoming easier to be good. Hmmm, I just had a brainstorm, I could make millions if I invented sustainable paper towels and toilet paper!

No cloth diapers here, I admit, but only one child, at least. We did use the ones with the little squares that changed colors when he was wet - and he never had diaper rash - that I can remember, but I am old.

We lowered our footprint, if only by moving from 1746 square feet or so down to 450 and then 640, but then let's not discuss how much gas it took to move from one to the other diagonally across country.

Can't wait to read what y'all wrote on Blog on Smog. Thanks!

Amber and Susan (close your eyes, Shelly!),
I used cloth diapers with my daughter, too. I had a diaper service which I loved, but when I moved to the desert there were none out this far, so I washed my own. Back then it wasn't a question of being green for me, it was what I thought was best for my baby combined with the fact that 30 years ago those saggy disposables looked awful on a baby!! I tried them a few times when we were out and about for extended periods, but my angel always got a rash from them, so I stopped doing that, too.
Call me nuts, but seeing those bright white diapers hanging on the clothesline all in a row always touched my heart.

Carbon footprint has to do with how much CO2 you contribute to the climate change problem. Ecological footprint includes pollution, wasting non-renewable resources, etc.

I'm sure Shelly will get around to explaining it in a future blog!

@Susan, All you folks and your cloth diapers are not easing my guilt AT ALL! I got rid of my bike several years ago, because it was cluttering the garage and needed a lot of maintenance that I didn't know how to do. I'm thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to find a used bicycle in good repair to clutter the garage again!
