It’s All Geek To Me

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on May 13, 2009

Have y’all ever been in a foreign country and didn’t speak the language? Perhaps you were surrounded by people who didn’t speak your language either. All of a sudden you have to go to the bathroom, but you don’t know the word to call it.

When you try express yourself to ask someone where the bathroom is, all you can do is scrunch your face in a pained expression (which probably isn’t too difficult), hold your knees together, and point at your crotch. And, since you don’t know the words to use, you yell very loudly, “WHERE IS THE BATHROOM? BATH. ROOM!” You holler the words, because we all know that if someone doesn’t understand our words … shouting the words magically translates them.

That’s what coding a blog feels like to me. I just don’t speak this language! I went over to that Babelfish translator to look up a word in “Geek,” but it was all “Greek.” What did I expect from an on-line dictionary that, in Spanish, translated “Shelly” into “Exfoliados?”

I’ve recently said “goodbye to a blog theme that I loved. It was designed by Leanne Wildermuth (click on the picture to see more of her work), and she intuitively knew would please me.
Screenshot of This Eclectic Life design It’s a design that served me well for two years, and Leanne was always there to hold my hand when things broke I screwed up the code. I never have been able to thank her enough for that.

It was time to move on, because I needed more flexibility on my theme than I knew how to create. I just don’t know how to code css. When I saw the blog theme “Thesis,” I fell in love with the flexibility it offers.

All over the internet, people are talking about Thesis, and proclaiming how easy it is to use. I wanted “easy,” because I don’t want to code — I want to write. It seemed like just the ticket.

Once the theme is installed, there are two pages on my WordPress dashboard that allow me to instantly make changes to column placement, column width, fonts and many things I’ve not yet discovered. It’s amazing, and I love it.

But, as many options as Thesis offers, if you want to add splash to your blog, you still have to know how to code — at least a little bit! There are forums where you can ask questions, and dedicated volunteers try to help you figure out what you need.

That blog forum is my “foreign country” for these last few days. I could find how to do everything I want — if I knew the word for it. I’m not pointing at my crotch or anything, but I think that I’ve showed my ignorance, to the disdain of some of those techie types.

“Y’all know that little box thang that they put over on the right side of the page? How do I get one of them? How do I put one of them picture dohickies beside that bar over there?”

Fortunately, they are being very patient with me, but their replies sound vaguely like an old woman I heard in a Pentecostal Church once. They are speaking in tongues! I’m trying to communicate, but it means that I’m having to learn a new language. Does anyone know how to ask, “Where’s the bathroom” in geek-speak?

I noticed you had a “new look.” Did you design your new header or did your previous “person” make it for you? It looks great! I go back and forth testing new themes and I might have to “break down” and pay the bucks for Thesis – I’ve looked at it more than once! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Diva. I’m still working on it, and am being interrupted by real work! I needed a new look for my work website, and decided to try Thesis. Once I saw what it did there, I went hog wild. Yeah. My husband helped me set up that shot, and then I cartooned it. Doesn’t look very professional, but it’s the best I could do.

I applaud so many of you who create and re create blogs and themes. You actually do a service to people, in my opinion, because of your hard work, keeping it fresh and adding substance. I’m lucky if I get a story out once a week. Especially now with outside chores and the desire to not be sitting at the computer inside!

Looks good to me. I’m glad I found a place, besides the other blogs I visit, to drive by and look out the window and see what’s going on.

By the way, I forwarded the Medicine Bag info to a friend of mine who makes bags. I’m looking for charms to send. That is a great cause.

Thanks again.

Thanks Spadoman. I appreciate the help with the medicine bags AND am delighted to see you visiting. I’ve loved popping in at your space to see what you have to say. You crack me up. Hopefully, I can get by to see you in the next few days. I’m heading to San Antonio (and am supposed to be out the door!).

I am on a thesis theme also…I am learning geek too.

In fact Insightful Nana and I attend the Utah Geek Club meetings once a month. The purpose was to find a geek to help. We have continued because we always learn something.

I think that no matter what WordPress.org Theme you use you will need to have some geek help. The WordPress format is so deep. I have a good resource that is cheap and teaches you at the same time if you get really stuck.

I will twitter on the medicine bags all day today!

Sheila, I have long admired your theme. I wish there was a Geek Club near me! I appreciate your tweets! I have work out of town the next two weeks (I’m not complaining!), which makes it hard to do anything on the internet.
Thank you!

I definitely like the simpler look. It moves more of the focus onto the words rather than all of the other colors and items.

What other changes do you think that you’re going to make to this theme?

Thanks, Derek. Most of the other changes will be behind the scenes. I want to be able to make templates for the pages that are lined up in the nav bar. Right now, I can create a page that has the same sidebars as the home page…or one with no sidebars. I want to make pages that have one sidebar that is “different” from what’s on the first page, so I can put other content.
If I were only a geek…

I love the new look. The white background is always a welcome site to my tired old eyes. I give it a big thumbs-up. :)

I’ve registered for a Wordpress blog but find it so tedious I’m sticking with blogger for now. At least I know what I’m doing. Bye the way, in just about every country in Europe the designation for washroom is WC. You just have to say the words and they point you in the right direction, easy…ciao

Blogger is much easier to use if you don’t want changes in the format. I can’t use blogger for my work website, because schools won’t let the librarians look at it! Sites get “spammed.” Since I need a website for work, anyway…I may as well go the “full monte.”

Wonder if geeks use the term “WC?”

Grrrl, I know it’s a lil intimidating for we… errr… mature wimminz to have to ask all these young hotshots for help, but remember: You are funny and charming!! Don’t go all formal in the forums to try to make up for your non-geekiness! LOL Be silly and ppl will love you there just like we love you here! I generally say something along the lines of: “Grandma code dummy here. Can you please explain this to me as if you were speaking to a 5 year old? Wait. Let’s make that a not terribly bright 5 year old”! Hee hee
I do LOVE the new layout! Woot!

I’m liking it, too. Let’s see if I can make the other changes I want without having to buy help  . Glad you “found” your blog again.

I wouldn’t call myself a webs design genius by any means, but you are always welcome to pick my brain if you need help with something.
