Good To The Last Bite

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on May 29, 2009

Some of you may know that I stopped watching the television news quite awhile ago. I determined that all I ever saw was bad news, and it made me sad to see it. My friend Marcia taught me a couple of years ago that if you want your world to be filled with good, then you have to practice looking for it. I rarely find it on the television! Although I might not don’t remember to look for the good every day, I practice on Fridays.

Sometimes I go searching on the internet to find good things to think about and share with you. On quiet days like today, however, I just look around me. It’s easy to see the good if you open your eyes. Especially, if your eyes are gazing at food!

Crème brûlée from The Bronx Cafe in Dallas, TX

Crème brûlée from The Bronx Cafe in Dallas, TX

This crème brûlée was scrumptious last night, but it didn’t stick around long. Have y’all ever had crème brûlée? My husband pronounces it in the French manner, with a very nasal sound. I, however, pronounce it in the proper Texan way: “creeeeem BRU lay,” because I know how to “tawk raht.” It doesn’t matter how you pronounce it, it’s delicious! As Jessica The Rock Chick would say, “It was D to the E to the L-I-C-I-O-U-S!

I had never had it until a few months back. We were at one of my favorite restaurants in Dallas, Texas (The Bronx Cafe 3835 Cedar Springs, Dallas, TX 214-521-5821). Usually, I want their bread pudding. The waiter said, “Madame, we are out of bread pudding. Might I suggest the crème brûlée?”

I said, “Do you mean creeeeem BRU lay?”

He looked at me for half a beat and said, “Yes ma’am, creeeeem BRU lay.”

So, I tried it. If you have never had it, it’s a rich custard with a top that has been caramelized (I think they burn it with a torch).

At the first bite, I swooned! Did you ever roast marshmallows over a campfire? I loved the taste of the marshmallow when it burned — and that’s what the crème brûlée tasted like! Suddenly, I felt eight years old again. Crème brûlée is just as wonderful as the fountain of youth!

Last night, we had the same waiter, and I tell you what — that boy is sharp as a tack. He waltzed right over and said, “I’ll bet you would like some creeeeem BRU lay.” He was right. And, you waiters out there should take a lesson from him! Play along with this old gal, and you get a much better tip!

I had eaten every bite I could scoop out of the bowl, but there were still tiny bits in the bottom that I couldn’t get into the spoon. I hollered, “Look! It’s a parade!” as I pointed out the window. When everybody turned to look, I licked the bowl. Yes, I did. I’m not proud.

I’ll have to ask my friend SusieJ if she has a recipe for crème brûlée, because she does recipes very well at her blog. She has a fantastic recipe for Guiness cake, so I bet she knows how to make this! If not, I know that Jamie will steer me to a good recipe — nobody is better at finding information than she is.

Do you have a recipe for it? I’d love for you to share — or better yet, you can just send me a bowl of it. I’ll be happy to supply my address!

That’s my very simple “good” for this Friday. So, tell me …what’s good with you today? Leave me a comment, or join these fine folks in writing a post about your Only The Good. We are trying to spread an “optimism virus” on the internet, and we would love to have you join us!

When I saw the Twitter link, I thought for sure you were going to be poking fun at my Minnie Mouse Chi-cah-go accent ;)

My husband made creeeem BRU-lay once! He caramelized the top with one of those kitchen blow torch things. It was D to the E…well, you know ;) Guiness Cake? Who knew? I’m going to give my hubby that recipe. I’m not much of a beer fan, but he puts Guiness in his chili and it’s fantastic!

I would never make fun of your accent! Well, not much. Heck, I know how silly I sound to y’all! Forget about sending me creeeem BRU lay. Send me some o’ that chili! Yumm.

Thank goodness you didn’t post this on a day I was out and about — I LOVE it no matter how it is said! I have recipes, of course, but you know, I just collect them and never bother trying them… so I won’t share them unless you are desperate — and you are not.

And to make it worse, you have said Leon’s favorite, bread pudding is at the same restaurant – Wait, that is better, I can just dangle that in front of him when we are traveling. Thanks!

Of course, now I am craving it. Wonder if Leon will be driving by somewhere that makes it…. hmmm.

I’m so glad I sparked this virus in you.. you now keep me in line – for the most part. Thank you, ma’am.

You didn’t know you were contagious, did you  ? Bread pudding was my favorite, but now I dream of Brue lay creeem!

Insightful Nana May 29, 2009 at 9:49 am

I’ve never tasted Brue-Lay but it certainly looks good. My mom use to fix Tapioca Pudding and my mother in-law’s Rice pudding is to die for.
Time to graduate to the big time and investigate Cream Brue-lay.

Have a “Good” Friday!

I like rice pudding, too. Come to my neck of the woods, and I’ll take you to The Bronx!

Desert Diva May 29, 2009 at 10:08 am

Wow, that looks like some desert! The sister of one of my former co-workers actually bought a special flame tool to brown the top of crème brûlée. If I ate that, I’d gain a gazillion pounds!

My “Only The Good” is up -after having missed/forgotten about that for a couple of weeks now. It’s not exactly a post that sounds like an “Only the Good” but rather a way -my way -of trying to maybe gently lead people into what really is not just a good thing but for all of us, regardless of where we are on life’s totem pole, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, that I think is a really good thing that many people don’t participate in as much as maybe should be done.
Hope that qualifies.
I’m not sure though that making people yearn for some sweet foods is fair fodder though for Only The Good. Well, I know it’s GOOD but the longing I feel after reading about it -not fair!

There is a recipe on a link on the right of this you tube “how to” video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpr9lDltc24
and here is a basic recipe http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/creme-brulee-recipe/index.html

The truth is this D to the E to the Licious dessert is a dead simple custard that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Susiej May 29, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Yum Shelly!!! I will try this.. and let you know!

I’m looking forward to your recipe! If it’s as good as the Guinness Cake, I’ll be in heaven!

Thorne May 29, 2009 at 7:00 pm

And all I can say to that is “Yum-MAY”! Jaime so got me with “greater than the sum of its parts.” It’s so true! Crème brûlée is so simple and so much more scrumptious than it has any right to be for being that simple!

Yum! I love creme brulee, no matter how it’s pronounced.

It’s one dessert I won’t make at home though – I won’t allow my husband to have a blowtorch anywhere near my kitchen, so I forego it as well. It’s just safer that way ;-) .

I don’t think I’d trust my husband with a blowtorch, either! After your recent catastrophes in home ownership, the last thing you need is to replace the roof!

rositta May 30, 2009 at 7:27 pm

I don’t much like custard type deserts even though they look yummy. I did make it a few years ago for a dinner party but don’t remember where I got the recipe. We tossed our main tv about a month ago and haven’t replaced it. Probably won’t either, it’s so much more peaceful around here now. Of course hubby still heads to the basement to watch baseball, sigh… ciao
