Words From The Sage — Leroy “Satchel” Paige

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on July 10, 2009

Have y’all ever noticed that “vacations” can be stressful? Lordy, ours is this week — because it’s a working vacation. Mr. Tucker is moving a shed (sideways, with a fence in the way) and I’ve been moving my office (carrying a good 600 pounds of books upstairs). On a break, I started leafing through a notebook filled with magazine articles that I clipped and saved in 1992. Don’t ask me why I saved them that long. I just have a “paper fetish.” But, it was worth it! I came across an article about stress that spoke to me.

It was from a Better Homes & Gardens magazine and included strategies for calming your jangled nerves. Pretty much, it was the usual stuff you find like:

  1. exercise
  2. prioritize
  3. socialize
  4. positive-ize (OK, it was rhyming and I couldn’t help myself)

Satchel Paige

Satchel Paige

Anyway, I knew all that stuff already, but it had a delightful list of quotes from Leroy “Satchel” Paige. You know who he was — I don’t even know baseball, and I know who he was. He was one of the all time great pitchers in baseball.

But, he was also a “sage.” He was very wise, as evidenced in this “recipe for health.” Here’s what Satchel Paige said about his philosophy for healthy living:

  1. Avoid fried meats which angry up the blood.
  2. If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts.
  3. Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gently as you move.
  4. Go very lightly on the vices such as carrying on in society. The social ramble ain’t restful.
  5. Avoid running under pressure at all times.
  6. Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you.

Pretty smart man, eh? I found two other quotes of his that I liked:

  • Work like you don’t need the money. Love like you’ve never been hurt. Dance like nobody’s watching.
  • You win a few, you lose a few. Some get rained out. But you got to dress for all of them.

Maybe it was worth lugging around that ring binder full of magazine articles for seventeen years after all? That’s the good I want to share with you on this Only The Good Friday.

I didn’t know that some of those quotes came from Satchel Paige. Thank you for enlightening me. Great Friday post!!

Thank you, ma’am! I didn’t realize they were his quotes, either. Good thing I saved that magazine article! Have a great weekend.

Paige was an amazing man. He seemed to have a remarkable sense of his own worth inside so that nothing that happened on the outside could shake it. Advice from that sort of person is always worth giving a listen.

I was pretty surprised that these were quotes from him. Somehow I didn’t expect an athlete from decades ago to impart such pithy phrases. That looks like a prejudice on my part! I had better work on ousting that one…

Very inspiring thoughts! My dancing is terrible – I prefer nobody watching :) Blogging helps me stay positive. I look for material to post – I notice more beautiful things because I am looking for them – I meet more interesting people, because I am looking for them! If I look for it there is a good chance I will find it – that is how I go on!

See, Ellie, you already had the “only the good” attitude. We see what we expect to see. I expect you will see a delightful weekend! I hope it is, anyway.

Those are all excellent! Let’s not forget “sing as if no one is listening”

How great! My favorite one is:

Work like you don’t need the money. Love like you’ve never been hurt. Dance like nobody’s watching.

I now have that on my posted on my computer. Thanks!

I’m taking that one to heart, too…but my favorite is: “You win a few, you lose a few. Some get rained out. But you got to dress for all of them.” I’m trying to remember to “dress” whether I expect to get rained out or not

I see what has been wrong with me! I’ve been missing your (((((HUGS))))). Line dancing while pregnant? You are going to make that baby love music — maybe even make a dancer out of the child! Just don’t go into labor on the dance floor. Sounds like some powerful good to me!

Those are great, Shelly. I love the “don’t look back-something may be gaining on you” quote. Just because something may have happened in the past, doesn’t always mean it’s going to happen again in the future. Can’t let past events hinder future good ones.
