Ominous

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on July 27, 2009

Changing pictures from color to monochrome seems to change their “tone” entirely. On a bright and beautiful day, my husband and I drove through the South Texas Hill Country near Luckenbach viewing these sights. They seemed cheerful in color. Once I changed the pictures to black and white, they seemed almost ominous to me. What do you think?

Abandoned

Abandoned

Adventure ahead

Adventure ahead or danger?

Lurking

Burial urns?

Burial urns?

Those are some of the sights you might see in my neck of the woods.

A great bunch of pictures. Hardput to pick which one I like best – Lurking, I think. A tree ready to spring.

That may be my favorite, too. It seemed to be “crouching.”

I’m with Aileni – Lurking does seem poised for something. Up to no good it appears.

Odd how we give human qualities to a tree, eh?

I like the composition of the urns moving through the diagonal of the photo. Black and white makes us focus on composition and range from white to black, subject, etc. Just tosses color out the window and it tends to steal the eye away.

Notice your comments won’t say, “big, blue, Texas sky.”

Thank you! Ummm…a little secret? There was no conscious composition to that shot…I don’t know enough about what I’m doing. It was dumb luck.

Monochrome does intensify the shadows and visual relationships. That tree is definitely ready to spring on some unsuspecting squirrel.

It was too hot for the squirrels to be around. I think it’s waiting for a tourist. I didn’t get too close.

I don’t know the first thing about photography, but those pics are stunning! Thanks for sharing. (Would love to see them in color, too.)

I probably won’t put them up in color. Why don’t you and The Rock Chick swing down my way for a visit and I’ll bore you with all the vacation photos.

Mono does intensify the mood – that’s the glory with mono if you ask me! ;)

Beautiful shots!!

Have a great week!

It’s also the bane of the black and white. The intensity in this case seems stark to me.

These are really outstanding pictures. I really regret not going to the Hill Country when I lived in Texas.

I can just imagine how scary those trees would be in the dark of night with storm raging in the background.

Wishing you a scent-sational day!

And, to you, Patty. I agree…I wouldn’t want to be out in this field on a dark and stormy night!

As you say they are common sights where you live, I’m sure they don’t normally look ominous – but here they do!

In color they aren’t nearly as foreboding. Trust me.

It changes the mood entirely. These are awesome pictures. Ever shoot with a black filter? When there are leaves on trees, that really makes a most unusual image.

Dang. I have a Canon, but I just point and shoot. I’d love to know enough to use filters and have the money for special lenses. I need to take a photography class!
