Al-Amir Lebanese Restaurant in Addison. I Fell For It Hookah, Line, and Sinker

Belly dancers! International music! Hookahs! We missed it all, because we arrived for the lunch buffet at Al-Amir … and that entertainment is only offered in the evenings. Doggone it!
Al-Amir is a Lebanese restaurant in Addison, Texas (there is one in Dallas, too) that we found quite by accident. It was a very happy accident in my book, because y’all know I love to eat.

You see, my husband was on “vacation,” but I was making him “work.” We needed some tiles to make a repair in the bathroom, and couldn’t find what we needed in Denton. He planned to head toward Carrollton to a specialty store, and I decided to ride along so he would take me out to eat!

I’m smart like that.

I had searched on line and found a Spanish restaurant I wanted to try, but when we got there, it was closed up tight. The recession got it, I guess … and I mean to tell you that I was plumb disappointed. We started driving down Belt Line Road searching for anything but McDonald’s, and then I saw the mural of the belly dancer with a sign saying “Lebanese cuisine.” I fell for it hookah, line, and sinker.

hookah

Yep, right inside the door was this magnificent hookah (not a working one … just for show). The inside of the Al-Amir was very elegant, but it was very quiet. Mostly, it was business people there to chow down on the buffet.

the buffet

OH! People, there were such delicious smelling aromas coming from that buffet table. I’m not going to tell you how many plates I filled, but I’ll give you a hint: I was very un-ladylike.

NO! I said, “I’m not going to tell you!”

OK. Four! Are you happy now?

I’m just sad that I don’t know the names of the foods I ate (I only recognized the hummus). I won’t ever be able to order it again!

what is it

I don’t know what this thing was either. Anybody want to hazard a guess?

Trust me, we will be going back to Al-Amir, but it will be in the evening for the belly dancing and the music. I’m not interested in the hookahs, even though they offer “flavors.” Apple, Strawberry, Passion Fruit, Chocolate, Chocolate Mint, Peach, and Jasmine. It sounds great, but it doesn’t blow my dress up.

I promise that I won’t be taking the free belly dancing lessons that they offer at Al-Amir on Wednesdays, because if I keep on eating like that my belly will dance all by its ownself. And, when we go back, I will be eating like that!

Oh, how fun!! I’ve never eaten Lebanese cuisine, but belly dancing….ohhhh, hookah, line and sinker indeed! I love to watch it. We went last weekend to the Rennaisance Faire and one of the girls there was a bellydancer and she was so good. Much, much better than I am at it. What a fun adventure for you! We have some hookah lounges, but I haven’t seen belly dancers here. I’ll have to look.

Lebanese cuisine seems to me to be much the same as any Mediterranean food, but I just didn’t recognize what it was. I hate it when I go to a buffet filled with exotic foods and they don’t name them. Of course, I probably couldn’t pronounce the names anyway, but I could try.

I thought I remembered that you were a belly dancer. I am a belly jiggler.

Hey, wait a minute… a “jig” is a dance! I’m a belly dancer!

Oh, take the bellydance classes – at least a couple! It’s so fun – and at my last few classes before the fibro flared up again, Big Beautiful Moi was NOT the jiggliest person in the room.

I’m probably too timid to belly dance, unless I can wear a muumuu (which is fitting for a “heifer” like me).

Never done Lebanese food b4, but went a couple of times to a Greek restaurant in SLC where they had belly dancing, plate-throwing…the whole nine yards. It was GREAT!

I agree with you Sherry. If I had learned to cook like that, Lebanese food might be all I ever ate
