North Texas State Fair Parade

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on August 25, 2009

A parade! I love parades, and this Saturday in Denton we had one to kick off the 2009 North Texas State Fair and Rodeo. No, that would not be the same thing as The State Fair of Texas, which is at Fair Park in Dallas and has Big Tex. And, no, the parade was nothing like a Macy’s parade. It was just a small parade in a Texas town.

I was there, but I bet you weren’t! It’s too hot to stand in the sun waiting (and waiting … and waiting) for a parade, anyway. You can see the parade without leaving your chair. I stood on a street corner with my camera, braving the soaring temperatures, to snap pictures. Little kids tried to push me out of the way so they could get candy, but I didn’t let them bully me. I stepped right into the street — just for you.

I photographed it from the beginning color guard …

… to the bitter end. Yes, that is what you think it is, and it’s why the horses should always be the last thing in the parade!

I didn’t put all of the pictures I took on my Flickr page. Especially not the photo of the women who were flinging candy from a float at the beginning of the parade. They were wearing short dresses, and sitting down with their legs splayed. Didn’t their mommas tell those gals not to sit like that??? I was hollering, “I see London … I see France …” But, either they didn’t get it or they didn’t care. I could have cropped that part out, but quite frankly I didn’t want to look at it again.

There were floats, and clowns, and gymnasts …

44) And over

And, there was the cutest little urchin driving a teeny-tiny car down the street. I chased her for a half a block before she stopped and looked at me. Doesn’t she look bewildered by it all?

You can watch the slideshow, if you wanna. There’s a little box on the bottom right that you can click to go full screen.

Now wasn’t that easier than sweating in the summer heat to watch a parade? Ah tell you whut, it took longer to edit and upload these than it took to watch the parade! I hope you enjoyed.

I also LOVE a parade. Your town parade was wonderful. I especially like one of the last pictures, the cowboy riding a horse talking on a cell phone… now wouldn’t Roy or Gene or Tex just have loved to have that kind of technology?

The cowboy on the cell phone was hilarious. I didn’t realize I had snapped his picture, you know how you don’t always catch the nuance when you look through the camera lens? Later when I saw that I had snapped it, I was delighted.
