Saturday, September 19th is “International Talk Like A Pirate Day.” No, I won’t be participating. It’s difficult enough to translate my thoughts from Texan into English so that you can understand. I don’t speak “pirate.” So ah mona tawk lak a Texin, swatamonado. Say that last phrase aloud, and you should hear something that sounds like “So I’m going to talk like a Texan, that’s what I’m going to do.”
Now, it’s not that I don’t like pirates, in fact I do.
Johnny Depp was taken.
Sometimes I even dress like a pirate, but people tell me I look like a gypsy fortune teller. Drat. I didn’t see that coming. I wanted to look like Keith Richards.
If you are going to write a blog post in “pirate,” you might want to check out the official site for International Talk Like A Pirate Day. You can learn to talk like a pirate, talk like a pirate in German, and even get some pirate “pick up lines” (if you are so inclined).
If you have a WordPress blog, there is even a plug-in that will filter your text into pirate! You can see the post about it at the creator’s site. I suppose he still has it up to date.
Although I will probably be running around the house on Saturday trying to remember to say “mateys” instead of “y’all” and “wench” instead of “heifer,” I won’t be celebrating the day on the blog. I figure that if we are going to have an “International Day of Pretend,” we could spend it on other pursuits. Like:
- International Talk Like You Passed Fifth Grade English Day
- International Talk Like You Actually Have A Vocabulary Day
- International Write A Whole Blog Post Without A Curse Word Day
- International Use Your Spell Check Day
- International Write As If You Are Cognizant Of The Fact That Words You Write On The Internet Might Come Back And Bite You In The Butt Day
Oh, heck. That wouldn’t be any fun to write! But, it surely might be more fun to read.
I’m just sayin’.

Definitely need that Words May Come Back And Bite You On The Butt Day … both for the blog and just plain life. They do have a tendency to escape out into public with me chasing madly after trying to get them back.
I would dearly love to see you submit some of that Texas talk to the pirate translater and find out how many letters over the usual 26 were needed for the result.
Bwahaha. I don’t think they could translate most of what we say. It doesn’t make sense in Texan … how could anyone else know?
> International Use Your Spell Check Day
Well, just as a personal note, a very good spell check program is Spell Check Anywhere (SpellCheckAnywhere.Com), it adds spell check to all programs.
Yeah … but it doesn’t work for words like “there” and “their” … which is where (wear) I mess up all the time.
