Frazzled

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on September 30, 2009

They say that “a camera adds ten pounds.” I’m assuming from that phrase that they mean that a picture makes you look ten pounds heavier. If “a camera” adds ten pounds, then I need to lose fifty pounds pretty quickly! Later this month five movie cameras will be pointing my direction at one time!

Oh, Thunder! That’s so stressful that I think I need to eat a carton bowl of ice cream to soothe my nerves!

It’s not as exciting as it sounds. I’m not going to be a movie star, or anything (darnit). It’s just that there is a school district who wants to film my storytelling program for use in their district for a year. They will give me a copy of the DVD, and hopefully it will be worth marketing.

Actually, they are doing two films. One will be an hour of me telling stories for 6th graders (yes, there will be an audience when I perform, thank goodness). The other program will be the one I call “Tales With A Twist.” I demonstrate the making of cloth by using a spinning wheel and weaving loom, and I tell the audience what children did to help make clothing hundreds of years ago. When I’m done with the demonstration of spinning yarns and weaving them, I “spin a yarn.”

I’ve done both programs thousands upon thousands of times, but the thought of having them filmed has me frazzled. If it is going to be preserved for posterity, I want to be sure I perform it the way I like it. It’s also not the only work for which I am preparing!

I’ll spend the last week of October with middle school students in San Antonio telling ghost stories. I get bored telling the same stories, so I have about seventy stories spread on my desk with the expectation that I will rehearse them.

Did I ever tell y’all that I am an “over-achiever?” No, that’s probably not the term to use. “Idiot” might be a better descriptor.

To those of you who visit this blog regularly, I want to apologize about not being a good “blogging friend” right now. Once the filming is done, I think I can get back on track. Until then, all my time is spent in worry … about the performance AND about that fifty pounds those cameras are going to give me!

If I ever find out who “they” are — you know, the ones who say all those things — I’m going to give them a piece of my mind. Oh, wait. I can’t afford to give away any of that.
