Only Good is served at Café Garibaldi

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on October 9, 2009

With a name like “Café Garibaldi,” one might think “Italian food.” One might be wrong! The menu includes Mexican food and on Wednesday nights Peruvian food! This schizophrenic little restaurant in Denton, Texas is a hidden jewel. It is my “good” for this Friday.

Don't let the unprepossessing exterior fool you.

Don't let the unprepossessing exterior fool you.

Truthfully, I wasn’t going to tell you about it, because I didn’t want to have to fight you for a seat. I decided to let you in on the secret because:

  • A. Even if I tell you how to get there you might not find it.
  • B. After eating out every night for weeks as I prepare for some upcoming gigs, I’m bigger than you! Don’t even think you can “rassle” me for a seat. I’ll win.

Café Garibaldi is tucked into the corner of a tiny shopping center at 1813 North Elm Street in Denton, Texas. Elm Street runs South, so turn on to Elm from University Street. Are you lost already? Remember that I have been telling you that sometimes you have to look for the good in order to see it. Look for the café immediately to your right. Zip into the parking lot and dash for the door.

When you are seated, the waitress will ask you if you are there for the Mexican food or the Peruvian food. Say, “Peruvian!” Oh, the Mexican food is excellent, but the Peruvian specials are out of this world. It’s a different menu every Wednesday, but it’s always delicious. And, it always ends with flan. Is that good or what?

Just this side of heaven.

Just this side of heaven.

Now, I told you that “only good is served” there, and I mean it. One night, my husband went in with his mouth set for some chorizo (Mexican sausage). The cook refused to serve it, because she didn’t like the chorizo that the supplier had brought that week! Another restaurant would have tried to get rid of that stuff, but she cares about the quality of her food.

I’ll admit that I never know what I am eating. The waitress tells me the name of the foods and even spells them for me, but my “Texan ears” don’t comprehend it. In order for me to understand a foreign language (like Spanish or New Yorkese, for instance), you have to speak to me slowly and add extra syllables.

There is, however, one dish whose name I won’t forget soon.

A Peruvian hot sauce that should be called, "AYIII!"

A Peruvian hot sauce that should be called, AYIII!

I thought that was a dish of guacamole and dove right in. IT’S NOT GUACAMOLE! It’s called “aji” and I tell you what! That stuff will take the roof of your head right off! If your sinuses are clogged, here is a sure cure. Aji is good but in teeny tiny doses!

Now, some of y’all may have noticed that I’m not posting as regularly right now. I’m a little overwhelmed by work, but I’ll get back to writing soon. Be sure to drop by and comment on my “CD giveaway post” so you will have ghost stories for Halloween (and because I will be plumb embarrassed if I can’t even give these suckers away). Then, drop by and visit these other fine folks who also post “good” on Fridays. Y’all have a great weekend!
