Warped

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on October 18, 2009

I looked up the definition of the word “warp” so that I could properly explain it to you. According to a certain online dictionary, it means: “a series of yarns extended lengthwise in a loom and crossed by the weft.” It also means: “a twist or curve that has developed in something originally flat or straight (a warp in a door panel) OR b : a mental aberration.” As a kid, we applied the word “warped” to anyone we thought was about half crazy.

As a weaver, I know that the warp is the tight thread that I put on the loom, through which I weave. I also perfectly understand why warped means crazy! Threading those yarns on the loom will make you crazy!

It’s official. I’m “warped.”

I’ll be at the weaving loom you see above the next few days, frantically trying to prepare for a filming next week. After that is done, I’ll be able to breathe again. These photos, though by no means “artistic,” are entered in the Monochrome Weekly Theme. Follow that link, if you like black and white photography. Most of the people who participate are amazing!

Goodness, I’ve got a headache at the mere idea of trying to keep all those strands straight… Beautiful work, but better you than me.

Warped makes me think of wood being warped first. Also, when I used to make ASCII art and post it, sometimes it would be all warped due to the HTML code on the site I was posting it to.

Warp and weft… the patterns we weave of our lives, the 3… who are they? Clothos, Arachnia and… hmmm… is it Lacethis? Maybe not. I love these photos, and I’m green over that loom!
