Chances are pretty darned good that if you are reading this you are not one of the one out of six Americans who go hungry. According to a department of agriculture survey, that number doesn’t include folks who have food only because they are poor enough to qualify for food stamps. Food banks are in need of donations to meet the demand for emergency food.
“That’s pretty staggering,” I thought, as I shoveled more bacon in my face. Then I started to gag … not from the bacon grease, but from guilt. I feel that, like the hummingbird in the peace tale I told you, I should be doing my part.
Like the hummingbird, I am too little to do much, but I want to help. I’m planning a trip to donate to the food bank next week. I’ve decided that between now and December 12th, for any comment, on any post on this blog, I will donate an extra can to the food bank.
Yes, I know I am NOT good about answering comments — that’s beside the point. Dig in my archives, if you like, and drop me a line. It’s worth a half a minute of your time to donate a can to those in need, isn’t it?
[Note: As of 6:16 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8th, there are 29 comments not counting mine. Spadoman has offered to match my donation, FairyKate (who has not left me a link to a blog) donated $50 to her local foodbank, and Kathleen G.(who doesn't have a blog) has offered to match my donation to 100 cans). Anybody else wanna join the party?]
{Note #2: As of 8:41 on Wednesday, December 9th, there are 69 comments (not including mine) that have been submitted on various posts throughout the blog. I’m headed out to start my shopping today!]
[Update #3: I just got back from the grocery store. This is the start of it:
{Update #4: At 5:49 a.m. on December 10th, we have reached 88 comments! Folks from all over the world are visiting, mostly thanks to FairyKate & CrazyJudith! Thank you, ladies (and all you gents!)}
{Update #5: If you would like to see how many comments have been made on Friday, December 11th, you can visit my Only The Good Friday post for today. Comments that you leave on any post will be counted! In fact, if holiday drivers are making you insane, go learn A Ditty For Idiot Drivers. I promise you will never sing Jingle Bells quite the same way again.}

Learned about this through the yahoo group Stitchmap via Judyth via FairyKate. Great idea! Thank you for doing this! Going to tweet this right away!
hi crazy judyth sent me, LOL, hope you get lots of cans
Thanks to a”friend” from a canning group who posted this blog. I will donate about 50 cans to our local shelter, named “The Rescue Mission.” They are always in need and actually call my Food Pantry at my church asking for donations…You know I can probably make that 100. I’ll start digging and make a run to the store. Will post later
God Bless you for inspiring others. The Pen (keyboard) is a mighty tool…
P.S. I’m in Panama City, Fl a tourist area with so many homeless that get stuck here because they hear that there are jobs here. Not. Also a multitude of homeless Veterans as we have two military bases here… Sorry for the rattling on…
Thank you for this as i’m sure lots of others will thank you too.God Bless You
Merry Christmas! What a wonderful time of year. Many blessings to you and yours!
Great thing you’re doing! FairyKate sent me the link. Keep up the good work!
Heard about what you were doing on a canning forum. This is such a wonderful thing you are doing.
Pat
Great job – love it!
I have already given my canned food donation (only 22 cans, but we also helped run a canned food carnival that brought in hundreds of cans as well as cash donations), as well as my monthly cash donation (which helps with housing and other monthly expenses), or I would match your donation. BTW, Fairykate and Crazy Judith sent me.
Thanks for lending a hand! The task is hard, but with more workers it becomes manageable.
To stops with cans so far this year. One to the local grocery store where we picked up one of each canned item that was on sale. The other was outside a Safeway where a motorcycle group was collecting canned and dry goods to make up Christmas boxes.
We’re now busy making hats for Hats Off for Kindness, a 4-H project to provide hats for cancer patients.
P.S. Fairykate and *Crazy Judyth sent me
What a clever idea! You might consider contacting your local Community Foundation or an area family foundation to further leverage contributions. I know their are several families who have been very generous with matching community-led efforts like this in our area (Appleton, WI). Good luck!
Hi,
Heard about this from a really nice lady on the C2 yahoo group.
What an absolutely stunning and inventive idea.
Please add a can for me.

I love your site and your idea!
I was attracted to my husband because of his large @#^& store of knowledge (lol)

Bwahaha! You read the “about me” section, didn’t you? My husbands huge….vocabulary is his featured attraction.
This is a great idea and a great thing you are doing.
Whaaa-HOOooo! You are ON your way. 100 comments here you come! BTW…I left my blogspot site for you since I noticed you mentioned that I hadn’t left one. GGggrin! I haven’t written on it but if you have time, there is one story I’d love to have you read. It’s in the older posts nearly at the beginning of the blog. Mine isn’t as organized as yours is so I can’t tell you exactly where it is. It’s called The War Tattoo, the story of an embittered WWII veteran that I took care of at the hospital years ago. It’s reeeeeeally worth a “feel good but take a hanky with you” read. LOVed the picture of the food. AMAzing!

Mine, isn’t organized either,
, but don’t tell anyone. I’ll check out The War Tattoo today.
I’ll weigh in, too, sent by FairyKate and Crazy Judyth (by way of the Canning2 Yahoo group. We do love us some non-perishable food there.)
Hi Shelly -
I just want to say thanks to you for doing this!
I also donate food to my local food bank in Minnesota whenever I can, it is just SO needed, especially right now.
I also want to give props to Fairykate & Sheila (yes – they sent me) for making people aware of your generous offer.
Great job girls!
Fairy Kate and Crazy Judith sent me from the Canning2 group. What a good thing you are doing.
Great Idea! I was going to wait until after the Christmas Holidays to donate canned food to my local food bank. Is it better to give it now?
Waiting until after the holidays is good, Lynda. Most people who want to “give” think about it in the holiday season, but hunger lasts all year!
Hi Sharon B from down under waving and Kate sent me to comment for a worthy cause.

Hi all, so glad we can be a part of something a bit bigger than any one of us. I have been fortunate to get food from a food bank in my area and know that the line can be long. I am able to go back to school so I hope to be working so we can not take food but give alot back. Add a can for me and thank you for doing this and thank you to all who do. The need is indeed great!
Gee, Shelly, I love reading the comments!
Are we getting close?
I sure hope that Fairy Kate isn’t annoyed with me for posting her letter on a couple groups I belong to. I tried to write her before I did the “deed”. I did give her credit for posting the origional message.

Happy Holidays! what a wonderful charitble person you are! hugs
Looks like lots of good stuff here…will come back and visit after the holidays. Need help schleping stuff to the food bank? Sorry I can’t help…bad back and live too far away. Maybe you can get CJ to help–oops, she has a bad back too. ja ja ja! We’re with you in spirit and I’ll bring a bag on Mon. to our local food pantry. I’m sure you’ve inspired others to do the same. Enjoy your holidays. Carol Grace
If a single comment can feed a human being, then let there be many, many comments. My friend Fairweather Lewis sent me. Congratulations on reaching your goal. A very generous thing to do.
Great idea! Crazy Judith sent me……but please remember people go hungry all year long, not just holidays!!
Crazy Judyth sent me to your site and I am glad she did. It is pleasant to see someone from Texas with your values. I can say that because I am a native Texas and lived in Lake Jackson until 11 years ago. I love your attitude. In your visits around Texas have you been to West Columbia? That was the first capitol of Texas and the cradle of Texas’s beginnings. Check it out sometime.

I’m so glad to see americans helping americans! This is what makes this country great!
Dear Shelly, I’ve known Kate since she was just barely a “twinkle in her father’s eye”. I’m her mother, you see….and she told me she’s thrilled with the fact that you aced your 100 comments. She loves to help people and I’m glad she helped you. P.S. She told me the food bank lady who received her donation was THRILLED.
Congrats on reaching 100! I will go shopping for my donation when the rain stops and post a photo (if I can figure out how) during next week.

Yes, wonderful Fairy Kate posted this on Milagro World. What a wonderful, generous soul you are for motivating all of us to think of others at this holiday season. I’m a true believer in giving year round to those less fortunate, because I remember when I was less fortunate. Bless you for motivating all of us to take our own “inspired” action.
Hello,
Crazy Judyth sent me. I might be a little late but I’ve had a way too buzy week and another to go. I hope you have a nice December and then a interesting 2010.

I am blogging for my first time urged by fairykate. I thank God, or whoever is in charge, for people like you. Bless you for your giving heart.
I keep putting in my dollar bills in the red kettle, and giving to various charities, but nothing like you are doing to help the people in immediate need. Thank you for making me more aware of things to be done.
Another comment.
Blessings to you. May you be prospered beyond measure!
